Mah Jongg is not just a game. It has become a part of my life that allows me to entertain my Mah Jongg-playing friends, cook great meals to serve to them and test my mental skills during our game play (which, hopefully, is often).

I love these voices from the past…
The wonderful artist, John Davis, found a terrific NY Times article from May 3, 1924 and shared it on the Facebook site, Mah Jongg, That’s It. I love little tidbits like this. If you have anything you would like to share, send it on! Much thanks to John for always being on the cutting edge of Mah Jongg news!

We are everywhere!
Sometimes we think that Mah Jongg is just in our neighborhood…we forget that our beloved game is all around the world and especially in all the corners of our country. Take for example Omaha, Nebraska! Dianne Severa writes that Mah Jongg is thriving in Omaha…in fact, Dianne herself has two Mah Jongg groups. She writes, “one is on Monday evening and the other is on Thursday afternoon. We play at…

If you don’t already have this book, buy it now!
Because I have been on a self-imposed vacay from this blog during the pandemic I have not had a chance to discuss a very exciting book that was published about 9 months ago. The book is Mahjong: A Chinese Game and the Making of Modern American Culture written by someone I am proud and honored to call my friend: Annelise Heinz. Annelise Heinz is an assistant professor of history at the University…

OMG...YUM!!!
OMG…YUM!!!
The last time (and probably the only time since the pandemic began) I had friends over for dinner and some games of Mah Jongg was that period around this past Thanksgiving between the time that Delta was waning and Omicron had not yet started. For the past six or seven years I have been making this amazing – and very simple – roasted chicken that has been marinated overnight in buttermilk. I…

…and it still holds true: Mah Jongg people are the nicest people! Case in example is dear Donna Eschen in Northern California: Wife, mother, grandmother, great friend, Mah Jongg certified teacher and a very busy organizer totally running all of the many Mah Jongg activities at the Mussell Center in Santa Maria, CA. And, on top of all that – plus much more – Donna makes sure that the Alzheimer’s…

A good day for our favorite game…
Nothing like a day off to spend with our dearest friends and our dearest game! Whether you are playing online or in-person, this holiday is the perfect excuse to play Mah Jongg! Enjoy the holiday and…may the Jokers be with you! Abe Lincoln says: “I don’t have any Jokers…again!”

Notes from a voice from the past…
Hello to all my dear Mah Jongg friends! It has been over a year since I last published anything on this blog and I must say that I have missed you all. So much has happened since you last heard from me…I am living in beautiful Hudson, NY and teaching high school up here in Columbia County. And I am happy to say that there is a lot of Mah Jongg being played up here in the country! Of course, I’m…

I'M IN TROUBLE!
I’M IN TROUBLE!
My dear friend Sandra has been very busy lately – I just went on her website and couldn’t get over the amount of new and fabulous Mah Jongg-related items she has up for sale. I’m putting together my list of all the things I want and, as I wrote above, I’m in trouble…I want it all! For example, have you seen her wonderful Mahjong Mask Holders? I can’t decide which one I like best so I might have…

TWO WONDERFUL CHOICES!
I have repeatedly said that Mah Jongg people are the best people and now there are two more examples that prove I am right! One is on the West Coast and one is on the East Coast. Check them out…and order from both! No reason to have to choose between the two! The first choice comes to us from the Central Coast of California, near San Luis Obispo, home to the Hearst Castle. Donna Eschen…

MAH JONGG IN THE TIME OF COVID-19…
I hope you are all well and safe and looking forward to the day when we can play Mah Jongg in person again with our friends. With this in mind and in preparation for that day, Jill Fox has come up with a brilliant product line for sanitizing not only our hands but also our tiles! Yesterday my order arrived and it is just the cutest packaging ever (the flower is mine just to help you visualize…

MAH JONGG MONDAYS!
I was so honored to be contacted by Fern Bernstein, the author of Mah Jongg Mondays: a memoir about friendship, love, and faith. and Mah Jongg Mondays podcasts. Fern has been doing these wonderful Mah Jongg-related podcasts for a while now with a new version airing each Monday. As Fern writes, “A podcast where we talk about all things mah jongg. Informative discussions and exciting guests help…

IT'S HERE!!!
IT’S HERE!!!
Well, that magic moment has finally arrived…the new National Mah Jongg League 2020 card arrived in my mailbox today – and, as I am every year at this time, I am so happy to see it. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of games happening right now in New York (and around the country) with us in lockdown or shelter-in-place. But we can always play on line or join a video conferencing get-together…

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN…
Hi all – and Happy New Year!!!
Believe it or not, it is time to place your order for your 2020 National Mah Jongg League card. Remember, the earlier you place your order, the sooner you will get your card when the mailings begin in late March/early April.

A WONDERFUL SURPRISE!
Yesterday I went to get my mail and there was an unexpected package waiting for me. I hadn’t ordered anything from Amazon that was due to arrive so I was mystified. It wasn’t my birthday – or even my half birthday – so I wasn’t expecting any gifts. As I opened the package I was happily surprised to find this inside:
Wow! I am now the very proud owner of the limited edition Red and White Stripe…

CALLING ALL MAH JONGG PLAYERS
CALLING ALL MAH JONGG PLAYERS
We love our game of Mah Jongg but we also love our winnings. And now there is a way to give back some of those winnings to all of those who suffer from the devastating disease of Alzheimer’s. This is a national fundraiser and I am happy to say that Mah Jongg groups all over the country are holding events in June to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. But we need more…won’t you include your…
