HISTORY OF HAITIAN HERITAGE MONTH 🇭🇹 MAY 1-31st
Haiti, a country populated majorly by African descendants, gained its independence from French colonizers in 1804. The Battle of Vertiéres was a testament to the grit of the Haitian people, during which they overthrew the French to become a free country. Haiti was the first Black republic in the world to free itself from colonial rule. Today, the Haitian community exhibits these nuances of their history through their evocative art, literature, costumes, faith, and life.
The month-long celebration has continued with such activities as parades, flag raisings, and exhibits.
Mothers’ Day is celebrated in Haiti on the last Sunday of May. On that day, Haitians honor their mothers by wearing a red flower if the mothers are alive and a white or purple one if they are dead.
May reminds Haitians of the historic pact signed by the Black and Mulatto officers at the May 1803's congress. As a result, those officers created the Haitian Flag on the last day of the congress, on May 18, 1803. And, under that flag, they fought and expelled the French army, so Haiti became the first Black independent country in the world on January 1st , 1804.
The Haitian Slave Revolution of August 14, 1791 would have never been the only successful slave revolution in the world if General Toussaint Louverture, who was born on May 20, 1743, had not use his military genius to organize and lead the slaves from victory to victory against the powerful armies of Spain, Great Britain and France.
During the country’s history, it had 3 names: Ayiti, Saint Dominigue and Hispañola.
Haiti, in fact, is the world’s second oldest republic and the first nation to permanently ban slavery. Haiti was an example and beacon of freedom for its neighbors in the Americas and especially those enslaved in the U.S. antebellum South, including Frederick Douglass.
The Haitian flag states L’Union Fait La Force... Unity Makes Strength.
Haitian Heritage Month was first designated in the United States in Boston, Massachusetts and has since been celebrated across the nation for more than two decades.

CREAM OF THE CROP: A DUCATI 749 CAFÉ RACER FROM ESTONIA
***  JUST LIKE ANY historic marque, Ducati has had its fair share of divisive motorcycle designs. The Ducati 749 and 999 spring to mind. Penned by the legendary Pierre Terblanche, they were a bold step away from the design language established by the iconic 916.The sharp fairing and stacked headlight design shared by the 749 and 999 divided opinion. But it ultimately didn’t matter; both eventually proved to be highly capable sportbikes. Even the smaller 749 made a respectable 108 hp in stock trim, with the upgraded S and R models good for 116 hp and 121 hp each. —
