MONACO ANALYSIS
Alright, since I’ve seen several people being confused about Ferrari’s strategies today, I’m going to try to explain what happened.
For those who are not familiar with undercuts and overcuts: An undercut means that Driver B who is behind Driver A pits before A. That way, B gets fresh tyres and can try to make up as much time as possible compared to A, who has to drive on old tyres. This time helps B close the pit-stop window for A (a.ka the gap A needs to have in order to come out in front of B) and when A finally pits, B can overtake the other driver while he is in the pitlane and gains a position.
A overcut is the opposite. Driver A pits before Driver B for some reason and B tries to go as fast as possible to get a pit-stop window. If this works and B pits, he has a big enough of a gap between A and himself that he can comfortably use 20-22 seconds in his stop and still come out before A.
Obviously, overcuts work much rarer and teams usually go for the undercut. Not in Monaco, it seems.
Situation before pit-stop chain
Kimi was leading the race with a 1-2 seconds gap to Sebastian, who had a 3-4 seconds gap to Valtteri. Valtteri was followed by Max in fourth and Daniel in fifth.
Red Bull tried to do the undercut with Max; they wanted to pit him before Valtteri and try to overtake him while Mercedes pitted him. Mercedes reacted immediately and told Valtteri to push hard and pit soon after in order to ruin the undercut effect. It worked, Valtteri came out in front of Max (albeit it was close).
Now, with Mercedes pitting Valtteri to avoid Red Bull’s undercut, they started their own undercut on Ferrari. Ferrari had to react, there was no way they could have risked staying out longer and possibly losing the 2nd and even 1st position. So they logically gave the first stop to Kimi (as it is usually done to the team driver who has the higher grid position if they run the same strategy) and pitted him right after Valtteri. It’s important to note that Kimi himself requested the stop as well because he knew that the Mercedes could get dangerous. His stop went relatively well and it was all looking like he would retain the lead.
However, a certain Daniel Ricciardo was suddenly going much faster than Max, Valtteri and even Kimi on his older tyres (you can see this by looking at the yellow marked times above). In an unforeseen twist of events, the ultrasoft tyres gained “a second life”. Ferrari obviously saw this and decided to let Sebastian stay out in order to secure 2nd place and answer to Valtteri’s threat.
In these few laps, Sebastian put everything he had into these few laps, racing astonishing 1.15 laps that hadn’t occured before, thus making up an impressive amount of time.
In the meanwhile, Red Bull pitted Daniel before his tyres could finally give up and did not only manage to overcut Max, but also Valtteri, catapulting Daniel from 5th to 3rd. Now he was the threat to Ferrari and they had to answer by pitting Seb.
Now it is important to know that wen Kimi pitted, Seb was 1.1 seconds behind him. Kimi unfortunately got into a bit of traffic after his stop and if you compare his lap times to Seb’s, you can see that he lost about 3-4 seconds to Sebastian, which enabled Seb to come out in front of Kimi and effectively overcutting him.
This wasn’t a pre-planned strategy since nobody could have known that the ultrasoft tyre would recover unexpectedly after a while. If it hadn’t been for Red Bull trying something risky and leaving Daniel out, Ferrari would have never known to leave Sebastian out.
To sum it up, Kimi suffered bad luck due to unforeseen tyre events and Ferrari did everything to secure a 1-2, unexpectedly switching their positions during pit.stops. However, Seb was absolutely flying as soon as he was in clean air and was almost a second per lap faster than Kimi at times, so it is very likely that he would have had come close enough to try overtaking anyway.

Another year, another F1 preview. With everyone putting on their best serious faces bar Dan. And once again I’m convinced they would literally have to murder orphan puppies in front of him to make Daniel Ricciardo stop smiling!
