i am a magnus Long Tail truther . i know his daemon form has that silly little nub and it is very silly and endearing and i do love it,, but i always picture him with one of those long, beautiful articulate tails that bearded unicorns were often depicted with in medieval tapestries, especially in The Unicorn Tapestries :'))) (but even longer !!!) wails i just love the idea of his tail being long and graceful and expressive, swishing or flicking along with his pensive emotions, the end of it dripping with long, soft hair or perhaps fluttering feathers :'))) @wervusindaart (so sorry for the tag) has expressed this more beautifully than i've ever seen elsewhere, and it makes me so happy that others share this headcanon :'))) magnus' long tail is beyond canon to me, and is an essential part of the way that i describe him in writing :}

as a very musically inclined (and obsessed) person this makes me very very happy

do you think noise marines have any preferences for music? Or do they all just play whatever they like and during a raid or something you just hear clashing genres playing and piling on one another?

one plays lofi, one plays death metal, the other plays hyper pop, some guy plays edm and a group over there is blasting CHIPI CHIPI CHAPA CHAPA DUBI DUBI-

CANONICALLY noise marines dont even play music at all, its just fucking Loud As Hell Noises (we dont have time to get into my opinions on harsh noise as a genre)

HOWEVER. canonically, they can also hear something called 'the song of slaanesh', and while i think outside of combat they have their own little niches, i think during combat they adjust their playing to express this song in a beautiful harmony that combines their varied and disparate personal genres <3

this sounds completely plausible (konrad does pop up in places he is absolutely not supposed to be frequently and with great enthusiasm)

except malc isn’t around (yet). however, there is another hooded perpetual with weirdly strong psychic powers wandering the palace. this isn’t great for emp’s mental state but who said any of this was great for emp’s mental state.

now that first question. the short answer is ferrus and fulgrim at least start the au by being firmly On Vacation

ferrus and fulgrim, once they’ve spent some time working things out between themselves generally just kinda. hang around? they’re slowly working on undoing the damage they did to their respective legions, kind of leading the charge for emotional rehab here like ‘ok there’s got to be a way to learn these lessons without Dying Horribly. right.’ they are preoccupied with this for much of the plot, in part because unlike most of the other Primarchs, Fulgrim in particular (and Ferrus by virtue of sticking close by to him) is Not Allowed to interact with Juno. At All.* (*until she’s older). In fact he’s top of The List (which is a thing that does exist). (this could be the subject of a whole nother post however, so i digress)

Fulgrim is actually quite upset by this; he’s put some degree of effort into repairing his relationship with Ferrus, and wishes gman would afford him the same opportunity. gman said i don’t owe u shit, which he’s right about, and though fulgrim understands this that doesn’t mean he’s happy about it. especially when it means he’s effectively out of the running for ‘baby niece’s favoritestest coolest most spoil you rotten uncle’ like forever (don’t feel too bad fulgrim. you’ll never guess who juno’s favorite is. none of you ever stood a chance.)

luckily fulgrim has other children to occupy his time.

N’kari was really important to fulgrim post-fall, as a touchstone and companion. The two were still very close even though they had not seen each other for some time at the start of this au, so when N’kari has an unsanctioned hybrid clutch with a khornate daemon and is panicking about it he goes straight to his bestie who uses his imperial-green-card-by-marriage to shelter him from the two angered deities.

So aside from their legions, Fulgrim and Ferrus’ downtime is largely occupied with assisting N’kari and Skarbrand raise their menace twin girls: Deimos and Phobos! They are somewhere between 7-10 years younger than Juno, and idolize her greatly, though she mostly knows them as these annoying kids who follow her around while she’s exploring the warp in her early twenties. Anyway that’s where all of Fulgrim’s ‘childless lesbian double income auntie at christmas’ energy goes; he spoils those brats rotten.

oh man i never told you. recently we went to the albertina art gallery and in the contemporary wing we saw this painting, “nacht der skorpione”

and we were fucking blown away by it, like audible gasping from everyone, it’s almost as tall as the room and incredibly expressive and impressive

and after having walked around looking at the work of 99% male artists and their endless studies dedicated to The Female Form for so goddamn long my very first thought upon seeing it was “this was painted by a woman”, so i walk closer and sure enough, i was right, her name is xenia hausner.

and then i look at it for a moment longer and my chest swells because these are intense characters with internal lives and that is what makes them attractive and my second thought is “this was not painted by a straight woman”

and i mean i can’t say anything for sure but i looked her up and

and nobody else picked up on this in the original painting? when i told them they were like “what, why, because of the masculine (???) brush strokes”? they were not shaken to their very core by the authenticity of it? what i’m trying to say is gaydar is extremely real and straight people extremely do not have it.

Something I find interesting is that whenever people talk about the possibility of Fulgrim returning to the imperium they always refer to it as “redeeming himself”. Which is just very, telling on themselves as to how they view things I think.

Not to mention that it would be very narratively boring, I think. Fulgrim returning to the imperium would just be going back to square one, to the environment that set him up to fall in the first place. Obviously the influence of the Laer Blade helped, but the perfectionism and indulgence was already there in the background, and he less fell and more… turned things up to eleven. Yknow? I’m rambling at this point but do you understand?

Lion: musky, damp earth, dry pine wood, petrichor.

Fulgrim: always smells faintly of lavender, warm metal, slightly smoggy?

Perturabo: cut metal, sweat, sea salty??

Khan: woodsmoke, chilli? Dry and spicy, musky. He smells warm and comforting.

Leman: strongly of woodsmoke and musk, dog, and a little bit like he's rolled around in wet underbrush.

Rogal: metal, general...man smell, overall very mild scent, unless he's been working.

Konrad: old iron, dirty smog, faintly of the ocean weirdly enough, leathery.

Sanguinius: earthy, slightly sweet and also fresh blood. It's faint but its there, and also a bit like a chicken that's just gotten out of a dust bath.

Ferrus: freshly welded metal, dried Vanilla?? fresh snow. I've only been to the snow once but that's. Yeah.

Angron: iron, sweat, bit of b.o. (he tries to keep himself a little clean when he's sane but it doesn't really last), dust. Yeah he doesn't smell all that great unless you're *ahem* into..that...

Guilliman: clean. Faintly of olive? oil or bay leaves. Freshly showered. Not a very strong smell.

Mortarion: I'm sorry but he smells like you've just walked into the bush. Also very faintly like old dead meat. And surprisingly something a little sweet.

Magnus: old book smell. OLD BOOK SMELL!!, also musk, and cloves or allspice and I cannot stress enough OLD BOOK SMELL.

Horus: musky. Bit sweaty. Mostly smells like he's just gotten out of the shower. Cologne.

Lorgar: incense, smoky, dry earth, bit sandy like if you go inland Australia sorta thing, a bit like a creek bank. Idk why but yeah. He smells like a sandy creek bank. And like man. Sweaty (he comes from a desert planet the man probably sweats more oil than he put on 💀)

Vulkan: homey. Sweat. Warm. Very warm like a too-hot fire. Baked clay. Warm honey and lemon.

Corvus: bit smoggy, overall faint scent of...man. aniseed, fresh.

i don't usually have flashbacks but i do have very severe bpd episodes that offer a wide range of Fucking Awful feelings that feel impossible to rid myself of and now i will be thinking about this Every Time even if the comfort it offers results in crying harder oh this was perfect :{ 🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂

Primarchs Comforting You after a Flashback ~♡

Konrad: crouches by your side, he may not know the details of what’s happened, but he understands something's up and can tell well enough that it’s upset you badly. He grasps your hand in his, rubbing his thumb over your knuckles until your breathing slows back to normal and then tilts your head up to look at him, holding your gaze. He releases your chin eventually with a curt nod and pats your shoulder awkwardly, he doesn’t say anything, but you get the distinct vibe you’re being watched for the rest of the day, and you swear you keep catching glimpses of him out of the corner of your eye. 

Magnus: sinks to one knee and grasps both your hands in his, “look at me,” he says, his voice seems to rattle through your entire being and you unwittingly turn your gaze up to meet his, “focus on me,” he rumbles, holding your gaze. You feel vaguely woozy as you look at him, kind of like you’re being put under hypnosis; the back of your mind is still distressed but your body is warm and relaxed, you take a deep, shaky breath, “good,” Magnus murmurs, “just like that,” he pulls gently on your arm, you stumble forward and he catches you with ease, tucking your head under his chin and against his chest, where you can feel the steady thump of his hearts.
