that's awesome
I went to an estate sale near me today, based on a single picture that showed me that they might have Susannah (Felicity's doll) and Clara (Samantha's doll)
Tumblr media
I came home with this:
Tumblr media
I'm not sure if the original owner had Speaking Rain's doll or if I overlooked it, but she had all 6 of the original glass eyed dolls, and most importantly, all the rest of the girls' dolls.
I wasn't planning on buying my Christmas gift all in one place, but I couldn't pass up the chance!
Tumblr media
Susannah has a tiny chip on her chin but also she actually has wooden legs that move AND I DID NOT KNOW THIS? It never actually sank in that she's really made of wood! She was $2.
Tumblr media
Nina looks almost exactly like the one of the wiki, other than the slant of her eyes. She was $15 because someone knew she was American Girl.
Tumblr media
Sari is beautiful and I need to get out my other one so I can compare her. She had no price so they charged me $2. Kirsten had been holding her (I'm so sorry I had to separate you two :( ) but I was not going to pay $125 for each of the 18 inch dolls.
Tumblr media
Ida Bean was my holy shit if dreams come true wish and now I have her?!?!? She is the best surprise of all. She had no price but instead of charging me $2, the lady looked over at some racist "Mammy" teapot another lady was buying, decided she was slightly more valuable and charged me $5. (I would have $25 but whatever).
Tumblr media
Clara was snagged so fast. She's not the original version, but her face is matte compared to the one on the wiki.
Tumblr media
Amelia was (unfortunately) in a case with GI Joes so they charged $25 for her. I almost lost her hat when they handed her over to me. :(
Tumblr media
Molly's nurse doll was tucked over in a different case and I almost missed her. Her little hat kept trying to fall off and I can't wait to show her to my daughter because she was really excited for Molly to get a doll when we read the books.
Other than Kaya missing a button, the mini dolls are all there. Sending out amazing finds energy to everyone, because I surely did not deserve this much.

this is so interesting
also very much me but with sylvanian families (and how the mould changes represent brand direction)
hi there i saw your comic and i didn’t want to distract from the point but are you genuinely into column differentiation. because if so that sounds fascinating and i would love to hear about it
yes i am!! i opened tumblr to several requests in my inbox for this so here we go, a quick overview:
There are five general types of columns in Greco-Roman architecture: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite. I’m mostly going to focus on the Greek 3, as Tuscan columns are basically just Doric columns but bald and Composite are, surprisingly, a composite of other types.
(technically there’s also Roman Doric vs Greek Doric but we’re keeping it simple)
Tumblr media
In terms of the shaft, all 3 Greek columns are relatively the same, they differ the most in their top chunk aka the entablature. Doric columns are very simple, growing more complex with ionic and even more so with Corinthian. However do not confuse complexity with appeal! Corinthian Columns are often over decorated and gaudy.
For example, look at the Supreme Court building.
Tumblr media
This is an abomination. The Corinthian columns exude opulent wealth and frivolous decor, which is not what you want from a building meant to instill justice. But it’s the US so who’s shocked. Anyways
Tumblr media
Compare to the long lasting elegant Doric columns of the Parthenon. They may look simple, but they’re also complex in a way you might not expect: the Greeks used columns to form optical illusions.
Tumblr media
The columns actually aren’t straight, they’re curved just right to make the whole building appear perfectly straight. For a modern example, lets look at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland! Surprisingly the imagineers at Disney have an overlap with the ancient architects of Greece: they mess with perspective to create broader illusions of size and depth. And look at those beautiful Doric columns. Elegant. Graceful. A sign of wealth without excess. This should be our supreme court

also just wanna clarify cause i havent in a while that ag is allowed to make white dolls, the problem is that they're a) prioritizing the white dolls over the dolls of color to an absurdly obvious degree, b) not even bothering to make the white girls interesting. summer is literally just isabelle with groucho marx glasses and grace's second book subplot as her main plot. nobody had a problem with joss bc she was fucking interesting– yeah she had the same "fight with best friend" plot but it was over her fighting her own internalized misogyny, having two interests ag had never touched on before (they got close with kanani's paddleboarding but her surfing/cheerleading was new as hell) AND she was really good disabled rep AND on TOP of that she had a new original design that didn't make her look like every other white brunette doll. compare to kira, who is "julie doll with a pink-shaded lea collection" and how nobody gave a fuck other than to say "her best friend has a way better design." also compare to how ag released their bland white y2k dolls ONE MONTH after kavi debuted, then debuted the next white girl of the year DURING KAVI'S YEAR. you see why we're mad??

this!
this is why I actually love Caroline
she doesn't get enough love despite how her books are actually so good and she's honestly a wonderful character overall
just spent the afternoon reading through caroline’s books. i’m obsessed. cannot get over her doing all that insane shit in her frilly little dresses. 💕
as a child, i *loved* wearing fancy (hand-me-down) dresses while getting absolutely covered in mud on the playground, so it makes me feel very seen to read about her having an insane little adventure and then get to the illustrations, which are giving fashionable girly-girl. it’s strange but also wonderful to me.
also, her mom is a total badass.
additionally, i really love the lack of disdain caroline has for more traditional feminine activities, despite wanted to break from that mold (with her wanting to be a ship captain). i feel like a lot of modern historical fiction revolves around characters who not only want to go against the grain of what their society deems “ladylike”, but actively disparage others for not doing so, and dismiss those “ladylike” activities as useless. that’s not generally an issue that i’ve seen a ton of from ag, but it sneaks in every now and then.
like. caroline hates baking day, but she doesn’t think it’s dumb, it just doesn’t come easy to her, and it’s frustrating! she understands the importance of helping her family with the garden, even when she’d rather be at the shipyard, because she knows they all need that food. she also genuinely enjoys sewing and embroidery; i can definitely see an older caroline, captain of her own vessel, continuing to embroider in her free time. whenever others disparage her for not being ladylike, she does the mental equivalent just giving them a weird look and then moving on. she really just thinks to herself like “damn. they are being rude as hell and need to mind their business. whatever.”
i think her books also do a pretty good job of being a power fantasy for kids (in that she gets to do cool, important things) without making the adults around caroline seem totally incompetent. whenever she’s trusted to do an important or dangerous thing, they honestly do not have any other good options, and she is genuinely critical in helping them get through whatever is going on, without it seeming contrived. i also liked that part of her stories because it felt pretty in line with what i know of the roles children played in their families at the time.
also, i love her character traits on full display in her last book. (spoilers) upon catching a thief stealing food from her aunt and uncle’s farm, her first instinct is to chase after him at full speed with a pitchfork. and upon catching him and listening to him explain how hungry he is, her first instinct is to get food for him and his family. daring and compassion. it sums her up pretty well, i think.
anyway. conclusion: i lub her.

It's kind of insane that Joss was so good. Like genuinely looking back at her in 2024 makes me so angry.
Because the company made a good goty and just got all the wrong lessons from it. Joss had a new mold, making her unique, she was a disabled character, she learnt not to look down on feminine hobbies and to not abandon her old friends after changing!
But all AG saw was the money the accessories related to two hobbies brought in so that's what they took from it.
And I know Joss wasn't the last good doll or that there weren't bad ones before her, but she was so good when you think about what kind of dolls we got afterwards

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

Y'all I know that when so-called AI generates ridiculous results it's hilarious and I find it as funny as the next guy but I NEED y'all to remember that every single time an AI answer is generated it uses 5x as much energy as a conventional websearch and burns through 10 ml of water. FOR EVERY ANSWER. Each big llm is equal to 300,000 kiligrams of carbon dioxide emissions.
LLMs are killing the environment, and when we generate answers for the lolz we're still contributing to it.
Stop using it. Stop using it for a.n.y.t.h.i.n.g. We need to kill it.

depression tips™
shower. not a bath, a shower. use water as hot or cold as u like. u dont even need to wash. just get in under the water and let it run over you for a while. sit on the floor if you gotta.
moisturize everything. use whatever lotion u like. unscented? dollar store lotion? fancy ass 48 hour lotion that makes u smell like a field of wildflowers? use whatever you want, and use it all over.
put on clean, comfortable clothes.
put on ur favorite underwear. cute black lacy panties? those ridiculous boxers u bought last christmas with candy cane hearts on the butt? put em on.
drink cold water. use ice. if u want, add some mint or lemon for an extra boost.
clean something. doesn’t have to be anything big. organize one drawer of ur desk. wash five dirty dishes. do a load of laundry. scrub the bathroom sink.
blast music. listen to something upbeat and dancey and loud, something that’s got lots of energy. sing to it, dance to it, even if you suck at both.
make food. don’t just grab a granola bar to munch. take the time and make food. even if it’s ramen. add something special to it, like a hard boiled egg or some veggies. prepare food, it tastes way better, and you’ll feel like you accomplished something.
make something. write a short story or a poem, draw a picture, color a picture, fold origami, crochet or knit, sculpt something out of clay, anything artistic. even if you don’t think you’re good at it.
go outside. take a walk. sit in the grass. look at the clouds. smell flowers. put your hands in the dirt and feel the soil against your skin.
call someone. call a loved one, a friend, a family member, call a chat service if you have no one else to call. talk to a stranger on the street. have a conversation and listen to someone’s voice. if you can’t, text or email or whatever, just have some social interaction with another person. even if you don’t say much, listen to them.
cuddle your pets if you have them/can cuddle them. take pictures of them. talk to them. tell them how u feel, about your favorite movie, a new game coming out.
