Maeve glanced up from her magazine looking awfully confused.  “I think the program will allow you to leave whenever you want to?  We aren’t being kept prisoners or anything.  And humans... there are some bad ones here and there, but there are bad mutants too.  ‘Kicking human ass’ is hardly the answer to anything.”
Tumblr media
“So, how hard do you think it’d be to break out of here?” Callie is eyeing the walls around them as she speaks, tone casual but lips curled up into an easy smirk. “I can teleport, so I’m sure I could get a few out. Think we could gather up the cool kids and make an army or something? Go kick some human ass, right? Better than a billion more years of high school.”

Alex shrugged, smiling a little.  “It’s okay.  I don’t always have control of my powers either.  It happens.”  It wasn’t like she had anything to hide, she was just embarrassed of the things she’s been through.
Tumblr media
“I really do promise that I didn’t see anything.  Maybe it means I’m getting better at the whole control thing?  I hope so, I think I can feel the energy growing stronger within me.  What about you?  Do you have good control over your powers?”

It was too late.  Before Alex could let Maeve warn her, Alex had grabbed her hand and pulled back just as quickly as Maeve did.  “I… sorry.”  She wondered what exactly the girl saw.  Her troubled past or life on the streets or maybe what her powers were.
Tumblr media
“You shouldn’t be sorry, I was the one to lose control.  You didn’t do anything.” she dismissed her, trying to shake the images from her mind.  Mae couldn’t see anything specific in Alex’s past, only blurry glimpses, bits and pieces.  “I didn’t see anything clearly, I promise.”

“Yeah, I’m new.  I’m Alex.  It’s nice to meet you, Maeve.”  She smiled a little, shaking the girl’s hand.
Tumblr media
“It’s nice to meet you too, but--” Mae tried to warn her before it was too late, say that if she wanted her privacy she shouldn’t touch her, but Alex had already grabbed her hand.  Instantly, glimpses of the girl’s past filled her mind, and Maeve ripped her hand away before she could see any more.  “I’m so sorry about that, I didn’t mean to, you know.  I’ve been working on controlling it.”

Demetria cringed at the excitement that Maeve had demonstrated once she declared the obvious. She then narrowed her eyes suspiciously at the young mutant, wondering if she had any take on this mishap. “You wanted this didn’t you?” she asked with an accusing tone. Again, the Head Trainer wasn’t a fan of psychics and it was for many reasons—all which were personal. It definitely didn’t help that she was an empath and a clairvoyant. She knew right off the bat that this training session would be a regretful one, but she had to try, it was her job after all.
“It’s a first hearing an empath saying they’ve got a grasp on their abilities…Usually the emotions are overwhelming to control.” pointed out Demi with an uncertain gaze. “However, you know yourself better than anyone else. If that’s the case then we can focus on your clairvoyance…” Her voice trailed off, clearly not enthusiastic of doing such a thing. However, she immediately cleared her throat and gestured a nod for Maeve to follow her lead. “Your power seems pretty fucking straight forward to me. What part of it don’t you understand?”
Tumblr media
“Well, of course I wanted it!  You are the Head Trainer, which does make you the best.  Who wouldn’t want the best if they could have it?” she replied innocently enough, just eager to be able to finally get a handle on her powers.  Everyone else in the facility seemed to understand theirs; for a change, it’d be nice to fit in.
“Oh, I can’t control the emotions, nor would I want to really.  That’s messy work, messing with people’s feelings, especially because they wouldn’t necessarily be able to consent or anything like that.  I can only feel the emotions themselves and who they’re coming from, I’m unable to influence them so you shouldn’t worry.  But you are half right, they can be extremely difficult to handle sometimes.  But I’m used to it, you know?  I’ve had these powers since I was a little girl.” Mae shrugged, falling into step with the elder.  “They’re not as straightforward, at least not at the moment.  I think it works through touch, but sometimes it works and others it doesn’t.  I’m just sort of unsure about how I can use it.”

When the girl turned to greet her somewhat awkwardly, Maeve couldn’t have been happier.  “Hiya!  You’re new here, just like me!  I’m Maeve, what’s your name?”
Tumblr media
Alex walked around her new home, using her senses to sniff around and not get lost. She was still on edge and sometimes still felt like she was a drifter. It would be a while before she would call this place home but she was trying to get used to it. The sound of footsteps and a person’s scent made her turn around, raising an eyebrow. She wasn’t really one for small talk but she should try and get to know these people. “Hey.” Good job, Alex. Very welcoming.

“If you’re not a skeptic,” Astra asked curiously, her head tilting to the side, “Then what are you?”
Tumblr media
“I’m not sure what I’d call us, at least in this context.  Mama and I doubt the government, but we believe in all of the conspiracy theories, so it seems strange to call ourselves non-believers or skeptics.”

This was fascinating. Was this her mutation ? Could she clear the air with her mutation ? OOH, or was she magical like Sorbello ? SoHyun intently watched as she sat in silence, and he himself tried to maintain the quaint, quite atmosphere of their room while he got comfortable on his bed.Was he staring ? Well, hopefully not. He quickly took the Herman Melville he had borrowed from the library and held it open while he waited, trying not to seem very impatient to meet his roommate.
Once she was done, he watched and listened expectantly. ‘Lighter, how ?’ He thought to himself, but still agreeing with her with a nod. Whatever made the new roomie feel more welcome, right ?SoHyun was taken aback slightly when she addressed him by name, but he figured that it had something to do with the administrative paper-work when she signed in, at the least. “Hi, Maeve,” he gleefully responded, raising his arm in a flick of a wave before letting it settle next to him on his bed. “It’s nice to meet you too.” She seemed friendly. Which was an incredible trait to have in a roommate. She seemed reliable as well. SoHyun was only getting a very good first impression from her, even despite the very first thing that she did to interact with him was to dismiss him. “–And please, you were hardly harsh, don’t worry about it.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t in earlier to help around with the bags. I see you’ve already made your bed, too,” he just noticed. Her bags lined up along her side of the room. At least his side wasn’t an embarrassment as he had just cleaned up his mess before leaving for classes, fortunately. “Hey, since you’re here now, just to make it clear before we get rolling here, I’ve got some ground rules,” he began, out of the blue. What are you doing, SoHyun ?
“You’re not allowed on my side of the room, and yes, that means you don’t get to see out my window and you miss out on my gorgeous view. Next, I like a nap soon after lunch, so, between the hours of 1 and 2 o’clock, I’d prefer if no one disturbed me. Next, while I’m in the room, I can’t have you using any of your powers… My last roommate almost set this place on fire and that’snot how I want to die. Also, lights out at 9pm because I like a full 12-hour nights sleep.  And finally, if you’d like to bring in someone, because, you know, we’re human and we have needs… I’d like a 24 hour notice in advance so I can make other arrangements for me to spend the night in a less awkward situation.” SoHyun himself did not know how he had managed to spew all that out without cracking-up. What ground rules ? Every single one of his so-called ground rules: he had bullshitted through. He was joking and he was getting pretty darn good at it, too.
Tumblr media
“Oh but I was,” she said very seriously.  “Which of course only added to the negativity.  It’s a wonder how much energy I was able to clear out with that sort of attitude.  And it really doesn’t help a friendship, to be rude the first time one meets another.”  Luckily for Maeve, she wouldn’t have to dwell on being rude for very long, as she could already feel he’d forgiven her.  She could tell already that he was a pleasant person to be around, just from feeling his emotions.  She could tell that she would like this SoHyun boy quite a lot.  It was the start of an excellent friendship, in her opinion.  “You’re very kind, you know.  We’re going to be great friends, you and I.  I can feel it.” Maeve laughed as she shrugged her shoulders.  “It’s nothing that you should be sorry for.  I only have the one, plus my backpack.” she gestured toward the knapsack and her beat to hell, burlap suitcase on the floor at the foot of her bed.  She didn’t take much from her actual home when she left it, and when she was freed from the compound and returned to her makeshift ‘home’, there wasn’t much left remaining from her possessions that she’d taken with her.  It seemed that her housemates picked through most of her things, taking everything that wasn’t feared to be cursed or too hippie-ish.  It left her only a few outfits and a few objects from home that she thought useful, but wouldn’t help her in finding her dad or money to eat or crash somewhere. “I pack light.” she shrugged it off, pulling her suitcase onto the bed and undoing the latches on the front to sort through her things, but immediately stopping when she heard the mention ground rules.  Mae didn’t do well with rules.  Not one bit, so it was shocking at first to hear that there would be rules for her own bedroom.  No such things existed, not in the places that she lived in, anyway.  There was no order in Cherish’s home, and in the flat she’d lived in with the other strangers, well, they were not fans of the law, so it was clear they wouldn’t be excited to make any ground rules either.  It was like she found the best order of things in chaos.  She narrowed her eyes the slightest amount, but acquiesced all the same.  She shook her thoughts away, and reasoned to herself that she’d at least hear him out.  She locked eyes with him and nodded at him to proceed. Upon hearing SoHyun out, what Maeve realized was this; SoHyun was an exceedingly bad liar, at least to her.  Though he may have prided himself on his joking skills before, lying to an empath who could feel the glee radiating off of him was a bit of a dead giveaway.  She couldn’t tell his exact thoughts behind his glee of course, but she guessed that his happiness was not caused by rattling off rules.  Oh no, it was a far too mischevious feeling for that.  Mae seemed an easy target, being new and all, and if she hadn’t been an empath, she would have never even suspected that he was messing around with her, but unfortunately for SoHyun, he’d gotten himself into a game unaware of the fact that his opponent knew that he was playing it.  She listened to his spiel and played along, nodding here and there and not breaking eye contact with him for as long as he talked.  When he wrapped it up and waited for her to reply, Mae simply giggled in return.  “You’re very funny, SoHyun, but I don’t think that I will be following any of those rules... you know as well as I do that they didn’t exist until just now, when you made them up to trick me.”

“Smart woman,” Astra said, nodding her head in agreement. “Most people don’t agree with me, they think I’m being all ‘tin hat’ on them. It’s nice to meet another skeptic.”
Tumblr media
“I think so too.  She’s taught me everything I know.”  Mae nodded, though disagreeing with the label of ‘skeptic’.  They were just about the opposite; they believed in just about everything.  “We aren’t skeptics.”

“I’m ready for our session, of course!” Mae bounced on the balls of her feet in the doorway, unable to contain her excitement.  Getting real, actual training for her powers for one was a relief for one, but for another thing, she felt like she was in a storybook.  She felt like she was a character in Harry Potter or something, going to a magic school.  Though being a mutant was far from the life of a character in a children’s novel, it was still nice to pretend.  Sometimes it helped to ease how hard existing as a mutant was. It was almost an accident how she got Demi to train her.  Almost.  Shortly after discovering that she had a training session booked with a trainer that had a rather negative aura about him, she tracked down one of the officials who could remedy her situation.  She made a comment in a conversation with a higher up about needing training, and almost immediately she had an appointment scheduled with the Head Trainer, of all the people!  (Mae personally thought that this was because she had also made a comment of thinking that the official had a lovely energy about him that she could sense without her powers.)  Mae could have felt Demi’s resistance to her from about a mile away, but that didn’t matter.  She knew very well that Demi was the very best, and that she wasn’t as terrible as she wanted others to believe.  She could just feel it. “I need help with control,” she replied simply, but went on to clarify.  “But not with the empathy.  I’ve dealt with that my entire life.  The whole clairvoyance thing is all sort of new to me, I can’t understand how it works.”

“What are you doing here?”
Although Demetria was free at the moment, she was slightly confused as to why Maeve was standing right in front of her, expecting her to know the reason of her presence. Picking up a nearby iPad, the Head Trainer scrolled through the schedule and noticed that she was in place to train Maeve. “Nah…Nah…Nah…No way, this is allllllll wrong! Johnson was supposed to train you today, I made sure of it.” She was practically glaring at the screen and was so close to crushing the device, but immediately set it down while muttering a few curses, once she’d realized that the change was made from the higher ups of the Program. It was a last minute one and things like this never sat well with Demetria, especially when she was dealing with someone like Maeve. Psychic abilities were the least of her favourites, but she was the Head Trainer and no matter who it was, she still had to conduct sessions as it was all part of her job description.
“Alright kid, forget it. Let’s get this over with. What do you want from me? Some physical training? Self defence…?” Clearly Demi was avoiding the obvious in relation to her powers and she hoped that it stayed that way.

“Well, your mama has the right idea,” Astra said, finding that she agreed with essentially everything she had said. “What do you believe, though? Do you agree with her, or disagree?”
Tumblr media
Mae had to think for a moment before answering.  On one hand, living with her mother for so long, she could absolutely believe what she said.  On the other hand, after talking about her mother to others, they all decided she was crazy.  She didn’t really know what to believe anymore.  “I think Mama’s right.”

What he had gathered so far about the institute was that despite the campus being an incredible location, where nature never ceased to impress, the place seemed to be full of people who preferred staying cooped up indoors, instead. In a way, it was good; he enjoyed some time and space to himself in the great outdoors. Being surrounded by and living among other people had not been such an inconvenience before. It could be because he had gotten too reliant on the quiet of living by himself. It was calmer, peaceful… He could think. So he was a bit bothered ? No, unhappy that someone else had a similar idea and seemed just as interested in the peace of the night as he was. “Well, as long as you know what you’re dealing with…” He trailed off, taking another puff of his cig. She somehow seemed like the kind of person to be aware of what she was doing; the way she spoke of the nighttime gave him the hint that she was far more familiar with it than he had assumed.

Socializing down by the lake wasn’t exactly Mae’s intention, but she certainly wouldn’t object to it at all.  She liked people-- liked talking with them and making them happy.  Though it seemed that the man standing behind her was the opposite, rather.  Even if she didn’t have her empathy to guide her, she could tell from his tone of voice and his stiff demeanor that he was trying to dismiss her without being standoffish.  But so it was that she did in fact, have her empathy to guide her, and she could feel his annoyance practically radiating off of him.  Maeve didn’t let it bother her though; it seemed like she felt that with a lot of people when she was nearby.  No matter though, she wouldn’t let that bother her any.  “I do know,” she replied simply.  “And I don’t mind.  It’s not like the trouble I’ll get into will be that bad.  It’s worth the risk.”  She hummed to herself, sitting on the cool grass beside him, legs criss-crossed.  She made no comment on his cigarette smoking; her mom did that at home all of the time.  “Do you come to the lake a lot?  I haven’t been here very long, so I only just discovered it.  It has a very nice energy about it, don’t you agree?”

“Well, here is—” Astra began, shaking her head slightly. “The program. The facility. Why are they doing this for us? Keeping us protected from the humans—why?”
Tumblr media
“If Mama were here, she’d say its because the government doesn’t trust us any.” she rattled off from memory, not even bothering to glance up from her magazine. "They're all selfish and good-for-nothing conformists hoping to eradicate the 'lesser' of the human race."
