So there's definitely going to be fic of the companions/ LIs having to save Rook from almost drowning, right? Right? Because Rook is competent, and can think on their feet, and can wing their way through most anything... Except a body of water more than waist deep.
Not at all inspired by the fact that I just fell off a rock while exploring Arlathan and watched Rook immediately drown, while I sat there going... Dude, just grab the rock. It's right there. 🤣

No Spoilers
One thing I'm really appreciating about Veilguard so far is the music. Specifically, the background music. Maybe there was a bug in the Playstation version of Inquisition, but there was just so little background music in Inquisition. Between lack of BGM and the banter bug, so much of that game was just... quiet.
And maybe it'll change once I get out of the main quests (been taking my time, and haven't gotten the option to do anything else yet) but so far, Veilguard has had some great music.

Spoiler warning below cut. I'm not posting specifics, rather, I have a question about gameplay/ game mechanics in relation to said spoiler. But if you are the type to overthink/analyze and you are worried you might guess, and will be upset, probably best to scroll on by. Also, no guarantees if any comments will have spoilers.
SO, anyway, that act 1 choice, huh? Didn't mean to see it, but I'm glad I did, because it is definitely affecting my consideration for which of my Rooks to run first.
But anyway, since the choice clearly is what causes that... status (don't know what else to call it) that was shown quite a bit earlier, where an affected companion won't use support skills, and instead has stronger attack power, do we know if that status affects our ability to romance them? I mean, I would assume so, because if they are upset enough with our decision that they are no longer using support skills and taking out their anger/frustration on the enemies, I would assume they aren't open to romance. Or does it just affect the tone, like DA2s friendship/rivalry romance differences?
Or, related question, do we know yet if that status is permanent? Or, you know, with time, and helping them with personal quests or something, can we get them out of that status?
Realistically, I doubt anyone knows the answer, but I'm asking anyway. Maybe someone does.

I just can't decide on whether I want to go Shadow Dragons or Antivan Crows for my Rook. They're pretty even by my reckoning.
Casual clothes - Point to Crows.
Aspirational armor - Love both. Tie.
Perks - Point to Crows.
Surname - Tie again.
Background - Point to Shadow Dragons.
Technically, Crows have one point extra in their favor, BUT the background going to Shadow Dragons has so much extra weight that it still evens them out.
But I can't plan my guy until I decide which faction...

Not spoilers, because I know nothing. Simply speculation. Simply putting it out there.
So, the big question for the state of Thedas at the end of Veilguard is likely to be whether or not the Veil remains, correct? Given that, and given how many people still talk about how ME3 ended and the problem that popped up that resulted in Andromeda going to another galaxy...
I don't think they'll do that again. I don't think people will get to choose whether or not the Veil remains. I think it'll be a set, scripted event, that'll happen the same for everyone. Why? Practical reasons. One of the big reasons they chose to move Mass Effect Andromeda to another galaxy was because the choice at the end of ME3 meant that, theoretically, there should be 3 wildly different world states for a sequel to be happening in. And not a simple, this character survived or didn't, here's a stand in character instead, but on a massive scale. It would have been stupidly expensive to basically create 3 different games, depending on the starting point.
It's the same with Veilguard. Theoretically, with the way it's been put to us up until now, whether or not the Veil still exists will have big consequences, and could potentially change a lot of things about the state of the world. So, I think it'll happen the same in game (possibly with small variations based on player actions) for everyone. Because otherwise, their choices for a sequel are 1. Spend the resources to make 2 fundamentally different worlds (EA would never) 2. Make it so that, oh, nevermind, it really wasn't a big deal, and things are mostly the same (Doubt it, it's a cop out, and one fans wouldn't like) or 3. Pick one as Canon and only make a sequel based on that state (Again, doubt it, because fans would be pissed).
So, my guess for the game is that we're not actually going to be able to choose whether or not the Veil remains. Because that choice would put Bioware in a bad spot for the sequel, and I think they know that.
Hopefully, people won't be too mad, if that does end up being the case. Because from a storytelling/ game making perspective, I think it would be the best choice, even if I think there is likely to be a chunk of fans that don't like it.

Cassie Animorphs really spoiled me for all future pacifist characters. Like, I didn't love her when I read the series as a kid, but as I've gotten older, I really appreciate that she's the moral center of the group, the one who's always trying to find non-lethal solutions, AND she regularly kills her enemies(and their human shields). Because she understands that if violence is going to happen, then keeping HER hands clean doesn't stop the violence. That sometimes, the only way to keep an attacker from hurting others is to attack them yourself.
And so she does the right thing. Always. And sometimes the right thing involves violence. And she regrets it, but if she's the only one who can save lives and that requires killing, she will. And she'll go right back to arguing that they should be looking for a path to peace while standing in the pool of blood.
Compared to how some series will have a pacifist character who relies on their friends to do all the violence while condemning them for it, or a series will find a loophole/change the rules to allow the pacifist to not kill when it would otherwise be 100% necessary, it was a nice practical situation to have Cassie dedicated to peace while being willing to kill to achieve it.

I'm torn.
On the one hand, I hope the first Rook they showed is available as a preset. This one. Right here.
Tumblr media
Because wow, he looks so good!
On the other hand, maybe it's best if he's not, because it would be a shame to not use the character creator.
They just did such a good job with him!

I do find it interesting that they seem to be still going with the same voicing conventions (Not sure that's the right term, but I'm going with it, until someone tells me the proper term) as they established in Inquisition.
I don't know if anyone else remembers it, and I don't remember if it was something said on the old BSN or in a video or what, but I do remember the devs saying - way back before Inquisition came out - that, for the people that wanted to go with the way intended (again, don't remember what they actually said 10 years ago, so I'm very much paraphrasing) that the British voice was for elves and humans, and the American voice was for dwarves and qunari.
I do think it's interesting that even all these years later, the first time we hear the American voice was for the qunari.
Edit:
Maybe not? Was it the American voice or the British? I thought it sounded different, so I assumed, but I am bad with voices and accents.
Also, do any other Fandom Olds that were around back before Inquisition remember what I'm talking about? I see a bunch of mentions online about what I said, with regards to British being for human and elven pcs and American for dwarves and qunari. But despite that, I still can't find where it came from.

I hope we get to see our characters/ companions actually wear gifts given to them. Like, I know, it's a small thing, but I was always just a tiny bit bummed the Warden can't actually wear Zevran's earring, and that Bull's in game model doesn't actually change to show him wearing the necklace of kadan. Dragon Age 2 did at least have some variation in the companion outfits after they were romanced. Don't necessarily need a full outfit change, but if a wearable token is given, please let it be visible in-game.
