Here we go… IATSE has officially set a strike date of Monday, October 18 @ 12:01 AM. 

Which means if an agreement is not reached by then, 60,000 union members will initiate a strike. 

Key demands:  - 10 hour turn around between shifts for all workers (i.e. you’re off the clock for 10 full hours before you have to be back to work, allowing for commutes home and a full 8 hours of rest - but even still, think about that. If you have to drive 45 mins - 1hr home, a common commute in areas like LA, Atlanta, and New York, then you have EXACTLY 8 hours to eat, sleep, and see your family)  - 54 hour turn around on the weekends (film work frequently bleeds over into Saturdays “Fraturdays” - leaving even less time for a personal life).  - Increased meal penalties (productions currently can pay extra to skip stopping for lunch breaks and they’d often rather do that, so the hope is that forcing them to pay more money will incentivize them to actually do lunch breaks). Imagine having to work 14+ hours with no break for a meal because production would rather just pay extra money than stop filming.  - Better pay - the contracts currently in negotiation include what is currently categorized as “new media” - think streaming channels like Netflix & Hulu. When these contracts were originally made, streaming WAS new and nobody was sure what it’s profits would look like so IATSE agreed to let these shows pay less to workers. But they are now the major form of media and HIGHLY profitable so wages should be upgraded to reflect this. 

Still waiting to hear from my union (OPEIU - clerks working alongside production) how we’re going to be handling this. They’ve only said vaguely “don’t cross the picket line” without explaining what that means when your job site (a major motion picture studio) is likely to be picketed. At any rate, I’m in full support of IATSE - people need regulated work hours & turn around times and better pay. For every 12-14 hour day I worked just as background, that meant many other people were working 14-16 hour days - which is just crazy because that doesn’t account for any commute (anywhere from 15 mins to 2 hours drive time some days). There are so many missed life moments and family time for film people. On top of that, just pure exhaustion - there have been countless stories of people falling asleep at the wheel and being hurt or dying because of film work commutes.  Entertainment is costing people their lives literally and metaphorically - and it’s just not worth that. POST PLUS IS COMING, WHETHER YOU WANT IT OR NOT!

Despite the fancy survey, changes to the UI and TOS reveal we’re getting the service in the future whether we want it or not. Obviously, Post+ is a terrible idea that is trying to bank revenue on user content. Unlike patreon or onlyfans, tumblr’s primary focus is on FAN content. The legality of this is NOT in the users favor and as the new tumblr TOS states, said users will be entirely liable for whatever legal matters arise.

SO WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Besides filling out the survey, it’s time to show tumblr we mean business and show our displeasure by hitting them where it hurts.

Ad revenue.

We’re proposing a 24 hour log off as phase one of this protest.

Something I find incredibly cool is that they’ve found neandertal bone tools made from polished rib bones, and they couldn’t figure out what they were for for the life of them. 

Until, of course, they showed it to a traditional leatherworker and she took one look at it and said “Oh yeah sure that’s a leather burnisher, you use it to close the pores of leather and work oil into the hide to make it waterproof. Mine looks just the same.” 

“Wait you’re still using the exact same fucking thing 50,000 years later???”

So, India is dying.

Look, I know a good number of you are from the US and things aren't amazing there either, but my country is literally on the brink of collapse. So I'd love it if we could talk about that for a minute.

A second COVID wave has taken out the healthcare system. There are no more hospital beds. There's an oxygen shortage. There's a critical vaccine shortage. The Central Government has thrown its hands up and is passing the baton to the State Governments to do what they can.

There are over 16 million covid cases. A record 330,000 new cases reported yesterday - comparable to the US at its peak. 187,000 dead as of today.

There is no plan.

Mass cremations are taking place. The cremation grounds are running day and night and they are short on wood. People are watching their loved ones die while waiting for a hospital bed, and then they're unable to give them the proper burial rights.

Hospitals are overwhelmed. Patients are being confined, two to a bed. They're the lucky ones.

We are on the verge of people dying in the streets.

This is the second-most populous country in the world. The largest democracy. A country that encapsulates over 15,000 years of recorded human history and has endured everything from famine to invasion to colonisation.

We might be at the end. This might be the thing that does us in.

People are dying.

People are dying.

People are dying and there is no plan.

More good news? Variants are popping up. A double mutation strain has shown up. It is resistant to current vaccines. This will not go away. This is the devastation they warned of when the anti-maskers were out protesting the minor inconvenience of covering their face in public.

My country is on the verge of an emergency state. Our government has failed us. This is as dire a situation as it ever could be.

Look. I don't do much with my life. I write fics, some of you have read them and that's pretty much it. I spend my days with my head in the clouds because that's where I like to be.

But two days ago, my grandmother tested positive, had to be taken to hospital and the ambulance caught fire.

She barely made it to the urgent care she needs.

So, here I am, using whatever meager platform I have to cobble this request together. Because I have to do something.

idk who needs to hear this but there is literally nothing that would be “too small” or “too insignificant” to stay alive for. You think birds are cute? Go for another day to see more of them jump around in the snow. You like hot chocolate? Wake up tomorrow to make yourself another cup. You are really into that one (objectively kinda crappy) series? Go until next Wednesday when the new episode airs. You do not always need a great purpose. If you have a small thing that can take you to the next morning? That thing is great. That thing is enough. Go get that thing.

If there’s one college assignment I had to do which I could force on all college students, it’d be this paper I had to write for a Research Methods class. It was later in the semester, and the professor gave us a very straightforward assignment: you need to find a news article which reports on the results of an academic study, read the actual study, and then explain in detail why the article did not properly represent the study’s findings.

Not only was having to do that a really useful exercise in terms of figuring out how misinformation gets passed around, but talking with a class of 25 other students who all had to do the same thing for 25 different articles makes you realize that the majority of all “studies show…” news articles misrepresent the studies they’re based on

Kudos to this dad on TikTok who discovered clothes for women suck and is MAD about it:

“I knew it was going to be bad, but I didn’t know how bad. And then we got a onesie for our daughter that says: ‘Sorry, boys, dad says no dating’ — sized for a newborn. I guess I’m wondering who they thought was going to date our 0-month-old daughter. But all the girls clothes are remarkably annoying for so many reasons. Why does everything have ruffles, why is everything hyper-pink, why is everything glittery? Why can’t I just find a one-piece bathing suit for my daughter? Why are girl clothes smaller than boy clothes when they’re the same size? Like, I don’t get why boys get normal shorts and my daughter gets shorts with an inseam of negative two. Like, we legit buy boy pants for our daughter because girl pants are sausage casing leggings. I’m not squeezing a baby back into sausage casing every single diaper change. 

I don’t think it should be this difficult to find what I’d call platonic clothing for children. Not to speak in absolutes, but the clothes we buy our daughter that were intended for boys consistently fit comfortably, are more durable, and aren’t see-through. The clothes we’ve found that were intended for girls are usually snug to the point of being form-fitting (even in the same size), cover less, and feel pretty flimsy in terms of quality. There’s no reason for it.

The most disturbing observation I’ve made is that it’s very easy to find clothes for girls that are revealing, and that’s not true for boys clothes. I don’t believe this is an accident. From the moment they’re very little, this is just one way society reinforces the toxic mindset that female bodies are intended to be displayed, and it conditions young girls to think objectification is normal.

You know what I want? Clothes that don’t have sayings that sexualize babies and children. Clothes that fit boys and girls the same when the size matches. Clothes that come in gender-neutral color options as a standard. And I want dinosaurs and functional pockets for my daughter. She deserves dinosaurs and functional pockets

I recognize I’m not the first person to have this thought. Women and moms have been saying this for a long time. There are plenty of dads on TikTok, but a good number focus on jokes or playing out the clueless dad stereotype. Part of my motivation is to be a dad who is both a competent parent and partner. This includes doing my best to be an ally to women, and that means speaking up on important topics like this to leverage the privilege I have in case it brings more weight to an issue. “
