9 Questions with: Renee Adams
In our "9 Questions with..." series we hear a little bit about our Pearlettes and what makes them tick.
- What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name Janis Joplin?
A rad female 70s rock performer.
- What about Janis' style resonates with you most?
That she does whatever she wants and is comfortable in pushing some boundaries.
- What is the Janis song that moves you the most?
Cry Baby.
- If you could take Janis to one concert who would take her to see?
Tweakbird. I'm pretty sure she would enjoy the vibe.
- How does your experience as a woman parallel hers?
I think I can find parallel with Janis in the way that I would love to inspire people and do the unexpected more than not. I think that is what she was all about in music and fashion.
- Where do you go to get inspired?
Everywhere.
- What is one thing in your closet you cant live without?
My pair of brown lace-up riding boots.
- How would you define your own style?
My own style is definitely tom-boyish with sprinkles of feminine flare.

Introducing our November Pearlette- Renee Adams, Drummer of Cold Showers
Having known Renee for more than a decade, it comes as no surprise that she drums for a band like Cold Showers. With brooding minimal vocals and rhythmic math rock rhythms, the appeal is broad-- their track "The Fire" was the soundtrack for personal favorite Costume National's SS14 show at Milan Fashion Week.
Renee Adams radiates an effortless style and confident swagger that fuels girl crushes worldwide, making her an obvious choice for our November Pearlette! -Katie

9 Questions With: GUNS GERMS $TEAL
Get inside the minds of the two inspirational designers with this week’s “9 Questions With…”.
-What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name Janis Joplin? ONE BAD ASS LADY
-What about Janis’ style resonates with you most?
That she had no fear in what she wore. She mixed and matched all the wrong things in her outfits but always pulled it off. She clearly did not believe in “the rules” and this is exactly how we like to dress we’ll wear kids clothes, men’s clothes, XXXL Fubu jerseys as dresses, mixed with Grandma’s fur coat and Grandpa’s hat, and then we look in the mirror before we leave the question is always, “Is this outfit crazy enough?”
-What is the Janis song that moves you the most?
Smiley - “I Can’t Stand the Rain”
Philippa - “Me and Bobby McGee” but I also love Mercedes Benz.
-If you could take Janis to one concert who would take her to see?
Our good friends Haim. They are three insanely talented badass long haired rock and roll sisters…Definitely from the same tribe as Janis. But I think we’d also have to take her to an A$AP Rocky show so she could smoke some blunts backstage with him. Rocky thinks he knows trill white bitches… Janis could top that. She’s the OG trill white girl.
-If you could play her one of your songs/ dress her in something you’ve created/ share with her your favorite photo, which one would it be and why?
One of our silk track suits from Spring 2013. They come in different crazy prints that are definitely similar to some of the fabrics she used to wear. The fits however, are post-Janis - super 90s athletic inspired… something we’d love to see her in. I mean, can you imagine Janis in a GG$ snakeskin silk tracksuit!?! Paired with one of her big fur coats…it would be next level.
- How does your experience as a woman parallel hers?
In a time that was already not particularly easy for women, Janis threw herself right into the heart of the “man’s world” of Rock and Roll, and she killed it. The Rock and Roll scene especially back then, was very much like the Streetwear industry today… completely male dominated and pretty sexist at times. From her style to her music, Janis was able to command the respect of many and is definitely a fearless woman we admire.
- Where do you go to get inspired?
The answer to this would be a novel. We love history, libraries… people watching (in crazy people dominated areas such as Venice Beach)… roadtrips… Our inspiration is endless.
-What is one thing in your closet you cant live without?
Soon to be our Made for Pearl bell bottoms. We have been searching for those pants our whole lives. But really though.
- How would you define your own style? Space Alien 90s Ninja Hippie Ghetto Biker Chick

Introducing our October Pearlettes- GUNS GERMS $TEAL
There are some meetings in life that are just meant to be-- A few years back at a fashion tradeshow I ended up a few booths down from these beauties at their first ever foray into selling their amazing wares. Throughout the show, people kept telling us, "You need to meet these girls, you'll adore them!". Supposedly they were getting the same on their end and the rest is history-- we were meant to be! I did resonate with their menswear inspired designs-- that are somehow both urban and surf, for boys (and girls)!
GG$ has grown leaps and bounds since then-- and the secret is out. They are doing big things.
Smiley and Philippa truly embody one of the attributes we love in our Pearlettes-- a fierce sense of style that they never really seem to be thinking about, paired with a sharp eye for design and business.
We are happy to introduce to you our October Pearlettes-- Smiley & Philippa of Guns Germs $teal. (Check out their interview and more pictures next week!) -Katie
Philippa (left) wears our Silk Paisley Romper and one-of-a-kind recycled fur vest. Smiley is in our Shibori Dyed Custom Flares and her own top & jacket.

9 Questions With: Magdalena Wosinska
Meet Magdalena Wosinska, our amazing photographer. She also looks incredible in Made for Pearl. She's the first guest in our series, 9 Questions With....Enjoy!
What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name Janis Joplin? A raspy voice with a smile and round purple glasses What about Janis' style resonates with you most? Vests and fringe. What is the Janis song that moves you the most? Ahhh, there are too many good ones, maybe Cry Baby? It's catchy, and her voice is just so intense. If you could take Janis to one concert who would take her to see? Wanda Jackson If you could play her one of your songs/ dress her in something you've created/ share with her your favorite photo, which one would it be and why? (I'd play her) "Breath" by Pink Floyd 'cause it's the best song ever; dress her in a leather jacket 'cause she is tough as leather and share a picture I've taken because we are both artists; I'd like to introduce her to my point of view, as well. How does your experience as a woman parallel hers? We are both outspoken and have a bit of tom boy in us. Where do you go to get inspired? The desert or forest. What is one thing in your closet you can't live without? My leather jacket.
How would you define your own style? Ahhh! It's changing a bit to be more feminine but its a mix of old, new, something easy to move around in but still a bit tailored.
