Instead of Maximus is Lucius' father, late reveal that Marcus Aurelius is Maximus' father:

-It's fucked up.

-Explains why Marcus Aurelius was willing to give Maximus the empire, but didn't let him marry his daughter.

-Commodus ordered the brutal murder of his own nephew, dark warning for the audience on what could happen to Lucius if Lucilla wrongs him.

-Full greek tragedy style, Lucilla spends the whole first movie escaping from Commodus' incestuous advances unaware that Maximus is her brother.

-It's fucked up.
