Performance
We are going to project onto the whole of the
background.
For the live performances, one of us is going
to walk on stage and perform' the live scenes.
There are also other projectors that we will use
to change the lighting on stage
Originally we were going to project all around
the performance space but decided that would
be too complex and decided to strip it back.
Audience
Originally it's going to be a traditional stage
with the audience viewing, however we
noticed that with the projector being between
the audience and the stage, it's going to create
a negative space between the audience and us.

Filming the shadow puppetry
17/03/23
We chose illustrative shadow puppetry to play into the theatrical concept, very much inspired by the animated segment of Harry Potter.
We ran into quite a few issues when it came to recording our shadow puppet scenes, we tried sticks facing up towards the puppet and sticks attached to the limbs so they wouldn’t be seen, but with our cameras and lighting in the way the shadow wasn’t working, so looking at the gif I made before we decided the most effective option would be stop motion.
Having to change to stop motion worried me as my puppets were not created to be on camera with obvious pencil and tape marks, but in the end the animation turned out pretty cohesive with the drawn backgrounds, the only thing I would change would be the size difference of the puppet to the backgrounds, which could have been changed if we stuck to shadows.

Making The Shadow Puppets
14-17/03/23
Before making my puppet I researched things like Chinese shadow puppetry, to help me with joint placements and movement.

Character Creation

Character Pinterest Board

clothes-
For clothes I referenced once again my Pinterest board of 80s culture, I gathered a lot of images from sears magazines and referenced it to uk fashion at the time and it seemed to be pretty similar, but the English 80s clothes seemed a bit “smarter”, I had to go for 80s English tween clothes as that will portray the character for what she is, as we want her to be a character written from anonymity, I wanted as little “personality” as possible, so just stuck to period clothes.
I went through my board and picked out what main features I could see throughout all of the clothes, that make them 80s clothes, I picked out
•Collars
•Baggy
•Checkered or Tartan
•Mom Jeans
•Big Buttons
•Fringes/Frills
•Colourful

Background Creation
I created a small collage to help my visuals, using images I found on Pinterest, since we are focusing a lot on time frames and passing, I wanted to go for a more “abandoned” overgrown look.
With the graveyard I wanted to create a sense of containment but not so much that it would feel overbearing and obvious to what the audience should feel about the place, or what scene is about to take place, so I placed a few trees and bushes around the edges but still left a glimpse of the horizon.

Our Relationship with Nature
28/2/23
Film screening of 'My Octopus Teacher'
“The Octopus Teacher” is a story following the journey of a diver meeting and octopus and following her every day for a year, it’s a journey of man connecting within nature and the relationship they can have together. This made me think about our project and the different experience of death, in the film the diver witnesses the natural occurring death of the octopus at the end after she has her babies, it hurt him a lot but eventually had to accept the natural cycle of things, which I think helped him a lot to deal with the loss. Our project is the complete opposite spectrum of loss and grief- denial.

Introduction to Sustainability and Sustainable Design
21/2/23
What is sustainability?
I think sustainability is using as little waste as possible and reusing/recycling wherever possible, making sure there is little to no negative effect on the environment.
What are the ethical principles of sustainable design?
?
What are sustainable materials?
I think sustainable materials are materials that can break down naturally or can be recycled to make new things, materials that have little to no negative effect on the environment.

Creating Our Story Plan
We created our final story board tweaking scenes by what we wanted to convey, we considered how we were going to show the scene (e.g. live action, animation?..)
The light storyboard
We then created two more for lighting and sound, we talked about how our lighting affected our audience and decided from there, such as the yellow lighting for a nostalgic “grandmas home” or dark to surround them in the graveyard.
The music storyboard
We decided that we wanted to create our own music to avoid searching for free music, and to create a more cohesive soundtrack. Emily and Rou decided to take charge of the music as they enjoyed messing around with the midi board.

Semiotics and Character Design

Semiotics - A tool for analysing how signs function symbolically in society.
"We make meanings through our creation and interpretation of 'signs’. According to Peirce, we think only in signs.
Signs take the form of words, images, sounds, odours, flavours, acts or objects, but such things have no intrinsic meaning and become signs only when we invest them with meaning.
Nothing is a sign unless it is interpreted as a sign."
(Peirce 1931-58, 2.172).

Do you wear a costume?
•Describe every outer garment you are wearing
Black denim jeans, black long sleeve shirt, hoodie with a slipknot print on the back, black faux leather boots, “tooth” necklace and crow skull necklace, dragonfly ring
•When and where did you buy them?
I bought the “tooth” necklace and dragonfly ring last year when out with my friend at the red brick market in Birmingham, I bought the crow skull necklace a few years ago at home from an online shop called shopdixi
•Were they a gift?
The shirt, boots and jeans were a gift
•Were they inherited?
No
•Were they borrowed?
The hoodie was borrowed and given to me by my boyfriend
•Are they all one brand?
No they aren’t
•What accessories do you have? watch, hat belt, jewellery, nail varnish etc.
Two necklaces, ring, my glasses
•Why did you choose to wear these items today?
The clothing items are all comfort items, as I struggle with my self confidence quite a bit I chose the simplest items that I feel still portrays my personality, like my hoodie of a band I like, and my jewellery that are small pieces of my style.

Visualising Narrative
31/1/23
To start we all drew our objects, this way it would be easier to visualise it as a lot of us had forgot our objects, it would also be easier to imagine an illustrated version into our concept.
We came up with our narrative and concept, then had to think in logistics and practical wise, we decided we wanted a set to add to that live aspect, we could also use our objects creatively this way.
After this we needed our storyboard so we set our and created that, brainstorming whilst creating it.

Space - Texts
Theatre and performance is contained more in a space and usually has more restrictions such as script, rehearsals, budget etc.. but body/live art is less restricted, almost not restricted at all as it is so subjective.
Quotes:-
“Performance art (or live art as it is also known in Britain) tends to be more individual in its personnel, more able to adapt and respond to its environment, and is economically more independent. More significantly, it overtly plays with the modes of representation and the roles of performer and spectators”
“The theatre as a practice or form of artistic work is usually bound by the events or playtexts which it mainly comprises at any given time.”
“Jerzy Grotowski stripped the theatre down to define it as an encounter between the actor and audience, with elements like lighting and sound having only peripheral significance..”

Body art
* An eating disorder is not body art and shouldn’t be compared to it, in my opinion describing any eating disorder as a body modification or “body art” is dangerous and not a topic for an artist to talk about lightly. If body art includes that topic it shouldn’t be glorified which it can easily be.
