A Short Story
I stare into her eyes full of amber green; staring in search of something. Praying that even a glimmer of light will shine through the cloud of darkness. Time starts to pass by the seconds, then minutes. I keep waiting; waiting for anything. For her to speak, smile, remember, but silence is the only sound between us. I turn slowly and begin to walk away with the weight of a thousand pounds thumping in my chest. I hear her soft voice speak up behind me,
“I’m sorry that I can’t remember how to love you.”
I don’t turn around, but I pause in my footsteps. My shoulder slumps down and I turn my head slightly towards her so that she can hear what I have to say.
“I hope that you find everything that brings you happiness.”
That was the last thing that I will ever say to her; the love of my life. She is alive, living, breathing, but she is also dead. The girl that I loved with everything I had is gone and somewhere that I will never be able to reach again. I close my eyes and try to remember how everything was before.
It wasn’t long that the sweet memories of our past was taken over by the night that flipped everything upside down in less than a few minutes. Driving home, the roads were slick with freshly laid snow. The night was dark and cold with the promise of winter arriving soon. She had warned me that we shouldn’t be out on the roads, but I insisted that we make showtime for the movie. Cars were driving slow in front of me, but I thought I was a better driver. I sped up just a little and that was all it took. The back of the car spun out of control and the steering wheel was useless in my hands. I turned to look at her, but she was gone. All that came to view was an empty passenger seat. The car crashed and we were brought to a hospital where they tried to fix what I had broken. When I woke I could hear them talking.
“She can’t remember anything from the last five years. She knows her family, she knows who she is, where she is, but anything after her twenty second birthday she can’t recall.”
I tried to convince myself that they were wrong. How could you just forget a piece of your life? How could you simply not remember the person that you loved more than anyone else in the world?
We tried, for weeks we tried to patch up the blank spaces in her mind, but we only ended up damaging each other in the search for who she use to be.
She can’t remember the day we met, or that our night out of the house was Wednesday so she could look forward to something all week. She couldn’t remember where we lived, or the day that I told her I loved her so much I didn’t want to spend another day without her by my side.
I packed up what was our life together, placed it in boxes, and stuffed it in my car. I picked up what was left of myself and left town knowing that no matter where I’ll be it won’t be as beautiful, but maybe less painful. Maybe, wherever I go the smell of lilacs doesn’t remind me of our first kiss or the next dimly lit cafe I pass by doesn’t make me think of her favorite pancakes.

This is what the tea that was dumped into the Boston Harbor would have looked like. In the 1700s, tea was compressed into planks; a plank this size could last a person roughly a year. They would be bought in sections, and small slivers would be shaved off into the kettle every time somebody wanted to make a cup of tea.

I fear that we are in a glass house and that my words will make it crumble. I'm afraid that when the walls and ceiling collapse into the dust beneath our feet, so will our love.
