On a positive note, I wanted to share something good and gender affirming that happened to me recently.

I live in a college dorm room with eight other people in what we call a “suite.” We are a gender inclusive suite, meaning we were assigned the dorm by school officials regardless of gender identity. In our suite we have half men and half women, with me being the only non-cisgendered individual.

We have all grown fairly close with one another and wanted to take a christmas photo in our common room. We all came out of our rooms to take the photo and had to decide on how to structure the photo.

We eventually decided on having men on the couch and women on the floor (for spacing reasons lol, not for any particular gendered reason).

I stood back as all the guys moved to sit on the couch. I happened to be in a more feminine presenting outfit that day.

Then, I noticed a gap in the couch. A few of the girls looked at me. The girls then said “Men on the couch, Phoenix,” with a smile. Not only had the girls intended on having me sit on the couch, the guys had also intentionally left the gap open for me.

I am someone who is so used to not being perceived as a man even by those who know I am trans because I often lean heavily into feminine presentation. I stood back because I assumed that my feminine look for the day would cause them to denote my gender identity as such, but they did the exact opposite.

In conclusion, just know that there are people out there who will care for you and will listen to you, enough to the point where they will so deeply understand that your feminine attributes do not invalidate your identity as a man. Don’t let your poor past experiences make you think that everyone is incapable of understanding you because one day you will meet someone who does and it will shock you to your core.

so the other day a castmate of mine was talking about having once been a little girl (at this point, i all but short-circuited because said castmate is a man in his mid-sixties and my brain had its little moment of “!!!!! trans person!!! and he’s OLD!!!!”) and being asked if there was a famous person he looked up to or wanted to look or be more like. and he said— again, as a little girl at this point— “santa claus!” and everyone thought he was weird for it.

and this story doesn’t read as well over text because you really have to see the guy. but he looks just like santa claus. he’s got the long white hair and the beard and the belly and everything. and i just. the amount of secondhand trans joy i experienced is truly insane. i’m gonna get old! i’m gonna get old the way i wanna get old! hey everybody you’re gonna get old; we’ve been doing it for years!
