Maddie being introduced as this literal ray of sunshine and then being the first to beat along to Piltovers turn to martial law.

Maddie mentions to Vi that Caitlyn told the enforcers that Vi went after Silco and his gang on her own when the council wouldn’t back her. I think from this line it’s clear that Maddie (and Caitlyn too) is othering Vi from her identity as a Zaunite. Because she chose to go after Silco that mist mean she’s willing to align herself with Piltover as opposed to Zaun.

She was always discriminatory toward Zaunites, they just didn’t make it overt at her introduction. The turn to fascism and discrimination can start with anyone. Including a literal ray of sunshine.

EDIT: my original take: “Her interactions with Vi mystifying her as ‘one of the good ones.’ One of the good Zaunites.” Was a misinterpretation on my part. I had only watched the episode once at that point so I am correcting myself and instead adding a new take I could infer from the scene that you can read above.

jayce enduring a symbolic rendition of viktor's trauma is so painful and so, so clever.

being stricken down and immobilized through sheer accident or, in viktor's case, a cruelly random quirk that caused his disability.

then physically dragging himself from the lowest level of zaun to piltover, much like how viktor spent his youth reaching toward the promise piltover offered, but only if he could "pull himself up by the boot straps" and get there on his own. socioeconomic forces working against him be damned.

i appreciate arcane reminding us of viktor's origins - the reason he is so called to help people and, eventually, save himself - and putting jayce through the ringer - the contrast between he and viktor's lived experiences is front and center throughout season 1. the writers send jayce, and the audience, on a grueling journey to contemplate those experiences and how they've manifested in these intertwined characters.

I don't think we give enough credit to how funny and scathing the fact is that, 10,000 years in the future, when humanity has expanded to countless other planets throughout the galaxy, and there are necromancers who can slay the vengeful specters of celestial bodies and cross through dimensions, no matter what planet we are on us regular folk are still sitting in cars stuck in traffic. The revolution on New Rho won't be televised but will be keeping a close ear on the radio for any problems taking out lanes on the freeway and what's a good alternate route to go kill god
