;R1999 - Self-Aware AU
Headcanons about an Alternate Universe in which everyone knows they're living inside a videogame. However, Vertin is the only one aware of the entity inhabiting her own mind, the real conductor - the "Player".
this is one of my favorite AUs to slap on whatever media I'm into so here we are <3 not sure if anyone's done this already, but PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE link me if you've seen any other ppl write for this AU! this one and any actor AUs are my absolute fave
this is just a word vomit introduction for fun, to get the basic ideas out of my head, so I can start writing for characters individually!
Okay, okay! First of all, some context for the AU before I go deranged overexplaining my HCs!
Aside from the "Storm", there is something else that haunts the people of this world: the fact that their lives are nothing but a simulacrum, part of a game.
The requirements to obtain this "self-awareness" is unknown. Those within the Foundation believe it's related to their respective "roles", that only the main and relevant characters are given the chance to fully open their eyes to the truth. Those within Manus Vindictae claim that one must be strong enough to break through the fog of complacency and their assigned scripts, to have their full potential unleashed and obtain true liberation. Either way, similar to the "Storm", this is a well-kept secret for a very good reason - everyone wants to have the upperhand.
There is one outlier to this whole system. Vertin is not only aware of the truth of this world, but also of her duty as the eyes and hands of the "Player". She must experience it all for their sake. Or rather, whatever she experiences will be the story that the Player will see.
This applies to her suitcase, the place where the Player's influence increases tenfold, bending everything and everyone to their will through her own body and voice. The longer one stays within her suitcase - or within her general vicinity - the easier it is for them to become self-aware.
How does one become "self-aware" and what does it entail?
The requirements and the catalyst for a character to become self-aware are still a mystery. But that's mostly because I specifically wanted to keep them as vague as possible, to allow some flexibility for NPCs and other characters outside of Vertin's suitcase.
The whole process of gaining sentience or self-awareness is mostly described as waking up from a nightmare, or a very, very realistic dream. It's like a switch, something that happens in a second without any warnings whatsoever.
I like to think that most of the people who wake up are easy to spot, because it's a jarring experience and panicking is the most normal reaction - but that they're often taken care of by the Foundation or recruited by Manus Vindictae.
The levels of awareness also depend heavily on each individual - some only know that nothing is truly real, that everything they've done up until that point was just a carefully scripted lie, the most basic realization. Others can understand the rules that govern this game and use them to their advantage, either through observation and study or just inherently.
Overall, the experience of being sentient varies as well, with some describing a disconnect from their body, while others feel exactly the opposite. Again, keeping it pretty vague so that people can fill in with their own ideas!
I'll talk about Vertin's case in detail when we get to her specific bullet point, but the same way the Player is able to experience the "story" through her eyes, she's able to see the same things they do - this includes the UI, the menus and everything you can interact with in-game.
Vertin as a character and a vessel for the Player.
The most common thing I've seen in self-aware AUs in my years of fandom is to turn the player stand-in (the main character that serves for the player to experience the story through and/or project onto, depending on the genre of the game) into an obstacle, one that keeps the characters from truly interacting with the Player, capital P.
The second most common thing I've seen is to simply ignore the existence of this player stand-in and replace it with the Player themself, either through isekai methods or thanks to the customization the game allows, etc etc.
When it comes to Vertin in this AU, I know I want her to retain her role as the center of everything, instead of being sidelined by the Player. She's THE Timekeeper, after all.
There's still some details I'm trying to iron out, like whether she's always been self-aware or if she became self-aware at some point during her childhood at the St. Pavlov Foundation. But I like to think that her relationship to the Player is a parallel to her immunity to the "Storm" - neither of these two things are inherently good nor bad. Surviving the "Storm" is helpful, sure, but it's painful for her. Having an entity like the "Player" haunting her is scary, sure, but it can be an advantage. It's a matter of how she utilizes the assets she was given, since her adaptability and determination are big aspects of her character. Vertin makes up for her mediocre arcane skills with unconventional plans and strategies.
But this isn't to say that Vertin isn't affected by the presence of the Player. Ironically, she's the one person whose freedom is limited. During battles, her skills and Tuning are available to you, they can also prove to be vital to win a fight, but in the end you're still the one calling the shots and choosing when her friends get to attack. You're the one choosing the layout of the Wilderness. You're the one picking which one of her friends deserves to become stronger.
In the last bullet point I mentioned that some characters can understand the rules of the game - Vertin is the most extreme case, as she can see the same UI as you do. She learns the way you like to fight your battles, your own strategies, she can see this and more.
Overall it's a very complex dynamic. It's not as easy as saying that she likes or dislikes you, that she considers you a friend or foe. You're part of her, you influence each other in many aspects and are stuck together for reasons she can't even fathom. While you may be able to read her thoughts most of the time, she becomes invisible once you enter the suitcase - the main menu of the game. Sure, the character you selected to greet you every day is actually talking to her, not you, but she's out of your view and therefore, out of our range. That's when Vertin wonders the sort of person that you are, if you care about her friends as much as she does. Are you playing just to be entertained? Are you invested in these events? Will you be there for her until the end of her story?
Another detail I like to think about is that Vertin is the only one who knows your name. Because at the very beginning, you were asked to input a name and she was there.
[screenshot was taken from this video, since it's the first one I could find that showed this specific part of the game lol]
Well, "your name" not quite right - she knows that whatever you wrote there is the name linked to your account, at least. And that's the name she knows you as.
Those who take residence in Vertin's suitcase or spend prolonged amounts of time with her, growing closer to her and all, end up becoming self-aware. This is a direct side-effect of your presence.
I like to think that characters who reach the 100% Bond can begin to sense the Player, to see the world in a similar way as Vertin does. Maybe even feel their presence EXACTLY like Vertin does whenever there's a battle. There is someone else on the other side of this screen, the fourth wall, who watches over them.
To some, it's hard to differentiate Vertin from the Player, as they just go hand in hand - but Sonetto, for example, has the easiest time telling the two apart.
On the subject of freedom and acting out of script.
The Foundation, Manus Vindictae, Laplace... It doesn't matter if they're self-aware and acting outside of what their script dictates, because they're missing one key ingredient: you. No one else but Vertin and her group knows about your existence, after all.
They don't know that the only story that matters is the one that Vertin is part of. The one that the Player gets to see and read and experience. And because the game gives you a very limited view into the lives of these characters, you don't know what neither Arcana nor Constantine do behind the scenes. You and Vertin don't see that, therefore, it never truly mattered.
Those most likely to start "acting out" are the troublemakers within Vertin's suitcase. Characters who are too curious for their own good, who are more susceptible to supernatural entities, who are just too impulsive - they would start to test the limits and see how far they can go, how much they can interact with the Player. Can the game be broken should they end up shattering the fourth wall? Is there a way for the Player to communicate with them? What will happen to Vertin?
I like to think that Vertin probably supports this, as she's rather curious herself, prone to questioning everything. She would also like to learn more about the Player, to truly tear into the game and see the full extent of your influence and her freedom.
Sometimes, Regulus and X will change their usual voicelines, just enough to be noticeable if one pays enough attention. Characters like Sotheby or Leilani might slip up and address the Player, rather than Vertin. Lilya, Pavia, Bkornblume have new animations and different expressions, ones you've never seen before - they stare ahead, as if searching for something, and then smirk or hum to themselves, deep in thought, like they realized something you're not privy of.
Sometimes, if you leave them as your selected assistant on the main menu, you can catch them muttering to themselves - idle quotes you never heard enough, about the outside world. Diggers does this the most, it's almost embarassing how easy it is to catch him talking nonsense, followed by Sonetto. If you leave Medicine Pocket alone for too long, you might come back to a screen covered in weird scratch marks.
On the subject of these characters being curious about the outside world and all, I think that a good chunk of them are generally content with the way things are?
We have to remember that in-universe, they're arcanists displaced from their respective eras. Their best chance at surviving is siding with Vertin, and if Vertin is content with the way things are, then there's no point in trying to disrupt what they have right now. They're curious enough to prod, but only as far as Vertin allows it.
And I think that's it for the word vomit!
There are some details I didn't know where to fit in, like the possibility of the fourth wall slowly dissipating the more time the Player invests in the game, leading to some characters being able to directly hear you if you talk while playing and whatnot. Or what would happen should someone outside of Vertin's suitcase figure out the existence of the Player, let alone interact with you in some way.
Or the concept of death being meaningless, unless it was pre-established by the game itself.
In Borderlands, there's this game mechanic where you can just be revived over and over and pay a percentage of your money as a fee, even though the canon that's established is that you play through the whole story without dying a SINGLE time - because the revival mechanics aren't canon. There's the divide between story and gameplay. That's pretty much the standard. But what about the deaths in battles in R1999? The amount of times I died to 1.3's UTTU's Flash Gathering is insane. How do self-aware characters feel about this, now that they know that they're bound to die over and over and be brought back because you have to do your Pneuma Analysis or reach the final stage of Limbo?
But that's pretty much it for now, I think I got most thoughts out of my system! Thank you for reading!

Screaming rolling kicking my feet rn
"Hold on, you have something on your cheek." -5wirl +Tighnari
Synopsis: How the 5wirl boys + Tighnari react when you move their hair aside to kiss their cheek. Otherwise known as you shamelessly flirting with them.
Disclaimer: This is some adorable fluff to unscrew up my tired porn ridden brain. No gender/pronouns used. Enjoy!
Venti
It'd been a while since Venti had last invited you out to lunch. Whether the reason had been work related or just a need for space you weren't sure. Though today you felt a surge of confidence. A sort of push like every cell in your body was telling you to finally admit your feelings. As though you'd never get the chance again if you didn't. So you bit the bullet.
"Oh hey, you've got something on your cheek." You stop him in his tracks brushing his braid aside and trying not to physically combust at his cute little hm?
He leans in a little closer, just enough for you to press a quick peck against his cheek. His eyes enlarge for just a quick second and you're almost ready to spurt out some apologetic words when he mutters,
"What's on your lips?" His kiss is soft yet fleeting. Cold from his drink and yet sends heat roaring through your body.
His grin is shitty when he pulls back, a chorus of raucous laughter soon falling off his lips. "You should see your face, it's so cute!" He soon devolves into breathy giggles stopping when he realizes you haven't said a word. Or blinked or.. wait were you even breathing?? "Wait! Name, breathe!"
Your head rests against his knee while he summons calming breezes to your side. "Geez, you kissed me first and yet you could barely handle reciprocation." He tsks teasingly.
"I didn't know you would kiss me back!" You pout
"Ugh the point is we're even now." He retorts with a playful roll of his eyes.
"I guess.."
"So, wanna kiss again?"
Your heartbeat slams against your rib cage. One hand sliding up to your chest entangling your shirt in your fist. "I-I need a minute.."
Heizou
You'd been waiting for what had to have been a full month for Heizou to come back from vacati- his private investigation. And the second you'd heard the rumors that he'd been found and was returning. You knew you had to snag him up before you didn't see him again for another couple months.
"Look at this beautiful view." He cycled on as you rested your face in your palms. "I took this picture the moment I set foot on the island. It truly is a sight to behold. This picture doesn't quite do it justice either because during the night time when the water is bathed with glowing moonlight.. ugh it's quite majestic."
"Hei, you've got a little something on your cheek." You tap your own face with the palm of your index finger.
"Oh." He slides a hand across his face, eyebrows creasing as he looks at his fingers.
"No, right-"
You shift your face to the side, brushing long red strands aside quickly taken aback when your lips are snagged. Pressed against his so suddenly that you nearly snap your head back. But he doesn't allow it, keeping you close with a hand on your cheek. His kiss so firm yet gentle. Before you can even get used to his taste however he's leaving you high and dry.
"There?" He finishes
"Wha-" You ask or well try to as he continues to hold your face. His breath fanning the bridge of your nose as he chuckles.
"I believe your next question is, how long have you known?" He remarks "The definitive answer would be: I've always known. I notice your little lip bites when I make corny jokes. I've noticed the way you absolutely must rub your knee against mine whenever we're sitting close, just as we are now. And I've seen the way your eyes flicker to my lips when you think I'm not watching. I assumed you'd just come out and tell me you like me. I mean I have been waiting for so long, my heart was starting to break." His chuckle is far deeper this time. Far more teasing than the first.
"You're such an annoying little tease." You hiss, shakily entangling his shirt in your grip.
"Come now, you must find some enjoyment from it." He pecks your lips. "Otherwise you wouldn't be clinging to me like this."
Aether
The two of you had finally made plans for the first time since he'd left Inazuma. While you'd always felt like the two of you had a not dating but acts as though you are, kind of relationship today you wanted to take it a step further. Before you'd met up he'd shooed Paimon off to the teapot and prepared a basket of food fit for a banquet. He wanted you to try all his new favorites after all.
"Ae, I think you've got something on your cheek."
He blinks in between bites before leaning closer to your hand. Your thumb slides beneath strands of silky blonde hair brushing them aside before pecking his cheek with a quick kiss. His eyes dart towards yours and without warning he pulls a tissue from the basket bringing it up to his cheek with a quick swipe.
"The wind wiped away your kiss, you have to do it again."
"Why can't you just ask for another kiss like a normal person."
"Lips this time please." He retorts puckering up.
Xiao
Not seeing Xiao for a couple weeks was pretty normal usually but you found yourself missing him these past few days. Which soon lead you to the Wangshu Inn kitchen to prepare a bowl of almond tofu for his return. Once you'd finished and tidied up the space you'd used, you headed back to the balcony. The view swept you away for a moment, quickly entranced by the way the landscape could stretch for miles. Almost so taken in that Xiao's entrance nearly caused you to tip over the bowl in your hands.
"You're here." He greeted simply taking the bowl from your grasp.
"Mhm, How was your patrol?"
He simply huffed heading downstairs to grab a spoon. No surprise there, Xiao never had been ready to conversate after a long patrol.
"Oh hey Xiao, what's that on your cheek?"
You could feel the roll of his eyes despite his back being to you. "I've told you not to dote on me." He stops at the bottom of the staircase, halfway facing you.
"Well you should want to get cleaned up right?" You reply curling a handful of strands around his ear.
"I can do that on my own. Just leave I-" A sound you'd never believed Xiao could make escaped the adeptus in front of you. His face soon hung, the bowl of tofu hanging between shaky fingers. You giggle as you watch his cheeks flush with red, briskly rushing to the tips of his ears.
"Xiao.." You mummer close to his ear unsurprised by the faintest shiver being his only reply. "Thank you for all you do for Liyue." You whisper, without another word you head back upstairs to allow Xiao the space and comfort to eat in peace.
Kazuha
When Kazuha came back to Inazuma he always made sure to spend at least a week at your place. A time in which you'd found that Kazuha took up very little space, he'd always kept his area neat and if he was gone the whole day he'd make sure he'd bring you back some goodies.
This time had been no exception: It was only twelve am when he'd arrived home but he quickly insisted that he whip up a, "thank you for letting him stay" dish. You sat a ways away allowing yourself to become swept up by the intoxicating aroma wafting into the living room.
"It should be ready soon, Name."
Suddenly an idea floated into your head. You stood from your seat softly inching up behind Kazuha. Though it soon proved to be worthless as Kazuha's eyes quickly drifted behind him. A small smile brightening his features.
"Oh, have you come to sneak a taste?"
"Actually, you've got a little-" You smooth his hair back and before you can hesitate further you give his cheek a quick peck leaning back to anxiously take in his expression.
"Hm so that's why you've been so distracted tonight?" He places the spoon in the pan before removing it from the fire. He slowly turns back to you deep crimson eyes filled with adoration. "Is it ok if I kiss you too?" He asks
"Sure.." You're not sure how loud you said it but you soon find Kazuha's lips pressed to yours. The only description you could come up with to describe the way his lips felt against yours being airy, light almost feather-like. As though he had some internal fear he could break you with a single touch.
Before long he's leaning away and you can't help your childish huff. "Don't worry, we can continue once you have dinner." He smiles softly.
"I eat all the time. Kiss me."
Tighnari
Today was kind of special. Tighnari wasn't busy with the usual training of forest rangers and he'd finished his patrol early which meant the two of you had time to take a leisurely stroll. Which for Tighnari meant he could point out random flora and facts about them as you walked. While for you it just meant you could bask in his every word while barely keeping pace because he walks surprisingly fast.
"Are you still listening? I was on a roll there and you missed it."
You trot along till you catch up to his side. "Sorry Nari, hasn't anyone ever told you, you walk super fast?"
"No, I don't believe I've heard that until now actually." He retorts with a small lift of his chin.
"Well anyway for your information I actually was listening. You were explaining the temperatures at which Sumeru roses grow the best in." You reply
"Exactly, excellent!" He perks up, smile broadening "I don't think I'll ever understand why you didn't come with me after we graduated. I don't really need to explain this stuff to you the way I would a rookie forest ranger. Plus you're so skilled with medicinal remedies you'd be such a big help to me and Colliel."
"The akademiya begs for you to come back and you try to talk me into becoming a forest ranger someday. Somethings never change."
His chuckle is dry and you soon realize just how close you're standing. Your elbow resting on his shoulder. The tips of his ear twitching as your breath flutters against them.
"Hey Nari, what's on your cheek?" A small hum leaves his throat as he checks his left cheek with two fingers.
"Huh, did I get it?"
"No I mean this cheek." You whisper, his hair is silkier than you'd thought it would be and when you press a kiss to his cheek you make a mental note of his deep shudder. "There it's off now." You giggle immediately pleased at how quickly his entire face blooms pink.
"Wh-what was that for?"
"Consider it my thank you for a lovely afternoon."

ANGRY SQUIRREL AMD MESSED UP VERSION OF TWILIGHT SPARKLW IM CRYING
My impression of the Harbingers when I first saw them
Pierro: I have never seen Game of Thrones but this is a character who could be from Game of Thrones. He is Jack Frosts terrible father. He has not smiled since the day he was born. If he yelled at you you would see your life flashing before your eyes. Probably immortal. He's the Davy Jones of Genshin Impact. He is cold and heartless but then at night he sobs over the piano to a sad music box tune.
Columbina: After countless experiments Dottore managed to create his own messed up version of Twilight Sparkle in his lab. When Columbina enters the room, an eerie version of the My Little Pony theme song plays and no one understands where it's coming from. Also looks like Lilia Vanrouge. Eats furniture. Brings dead birds to the Fatui meeting table and smiles at Childe and goes "the little birdie has fallen asleep :)"
Pulcinella: He seems like he is a close advisor to the Tsaritsa or a spokesperson for her. One of the more sane ones. Tired of everyone else's bs.
Pantalone: The man of my dreams. I love him. He deserves to be held. Hand in marriage. Soft for his spouse. A little desperate for affection.
Childe: He is what would happen if you put Ace Trappola and A3's Chikage into a very dysfunctional mixer. The easygoing one. Fully capable of attempting to take a selfie at the Fatui meeting with Pierro in the background while Childe wears sunglasses and tells him to smile more. Has doodled stick figures of the other Harbingers while sitting at a table with them at least once. He is whatever Genshin's equivalent of a TikToker is.
Dottore: Songs from the soundtrack of the Jekyll & Hyde musical are playing in the back of my head. He is both Dr. Frankenstein and the monster. Massive outfit upgrade from the manga. Has the most insane laugh that he has definitely not practiced in front of the mirror. Evil and scary but occasionally has a Dr. Doofenschmirtz side to him. Cow mask. Needs to upgrade to Plague Doctor mask.
Capitano: Would be capable of piloting a submarine. Also immortal. Very serious. Gamers™ would like to play a character who looks like him because he looks like an epic warlord. Would shriek when the air freshener goes off in the bathroom at night in the dark and he'd knock something over.
Sandrone: Definitely insane. Sad backstory. Terrifying. Creator of Katherines. She's a matroshka doll and there's more versions of herself inside her that you have to defeat before she stays down. She just sheds her skin and there's a smaller Sandrone holding a knife ready to continue the battle.
La Signora: Like Lisa she is a cishet Reddit man's waifu fever dream but undeniably queer. The one who keeps Childe and Scaramouche from engaging in death battles with each other. They're like two feral cats that she keeps apart. The cynical aunt of the harbinger family. Her weapon of choice is actually bottles of poison and she just throws stuff in there that isn't in any poison recipe but definitely should not be consumed
Arlecchino: Scary. I read about the orphanage thing. Same vibes as that orphanage mother from The Promised Neverland. Can't cook. Aced all her tests in school but the teachers disliked her because she gave off the most eerie vibes and may have been involved with unsolved murder cases. Likes spiders and talks to them. Likes to collect dark artifacts that are probably cursed in the attic of her orphanage.
Scaramouche: angry squirrel who does the fandango

Albedo: but if you don't mind me asking, what are you-

Albedo: It 's okay.
Sucrose: eh?
Albedo: Curiosity exists to be sated, if we simply ignored our curiosity mankind wouldn't have advanced as much as it did. In fact, I'm happy that you managed to overcome your insecurities to act upon your curiosity.
Sucrose: Really?
Albedo: Of course. You're growing as an alchemist, one day I'm sure you'll be even better than me.
Sucrose: I don't think that's pos-
Albedo: *pats her head* anything is possible if you put your mind to it. And if you ever need my help in any sort of curiosity you have, you can just call me and I'll be glad to help.
Sucrose: *blushes*
Albedo: now if you excuse me, i need to check if my potions have cooled down already.
Sucrose: o-okay.
Albedo: *leaves the lab, walking quite a bit away from it*
Hilichurl horde: *spots him and gets ready to attack.*
Albedo: excuse me for a moment. *walks past them and stops in front of a big tree*
Hilichurls: ???
Albedo: *inhales* . . . . . *slams his red face on the tree* AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! HOW CAN SHE BE SO CUTE!?!?!?
Hilichurls: !?!?!?
Albedo: *sighs* i'm sorry. *turns to them with a bleeding face* where were we?
Hilichurls: *stepping back scared* . . . . *runs away*
Albedo: *confused* . . .was it something I've said?

Sucrose:*opens door* Mr. Albedo? Are you here?
Empty lab room
Sucrose:(Sigh, where could be? I wish he’d keep up us informed whenever he decides to venture of.) Hmm? *grabs note book*
Sucrose:*flipping through pages*(He left this? That means he couldn’t have gone too far. His drawings are so detailed, vivid even. I wish I had an inkling of this kind of-)
She flips to a page of extremely well drawn and boarder line photorealistic sketches of her thighs.
Sucrose:*completely red* What the-
Albedo:*opens door* Oh, Sucrose. Wasn’t expecting a drop by. Have you come to me with a breakthrough of some-.......
Sucrose:.......
Albedo:I’ve seen you stumbled upon sketches. What do you think?
Sucrose:I...I...these are...why-
Albedo:Hehehe, you seem flustered? Though I can imagine why. *grabs notebook* I wanted to improve my skills of drawing human anatomy, a rather difficult endeavor. Finding a good place to start is challenging, so is going off of a person by memory. I’ve tried watching the citizens but they pass by and move too often before I can really start. You on the other hand, I see you often. Not to mention you’re known to be performing experiments in one location for hours.
Sucrose:So...you have sketching my legs for anatomy practice?
Albedo:My first sketches were rather crude. The more I drew however, the more subtle things I noticed. Like the impression your socks make against your thighs.
Sucrose:*flustered* Why are you looking so intensely!? How long have you been doing this?
Albedo:Not terribly long. I’m detailed because it’s the only way to improve. I’ll admit that I did want to ask for permission first, but I positive you’d have a reaction similar to this. That and knowing that I might be sketching you would cause you to move unnaturally.
Sucrose:I...I see. Are my legs...the only thing you’ve sketched?
Albedo:Yes, I wanted a good foundation before moving onto things like hips, hands, torso, che-
Sucrose:*might actually die from this*.....
Albedo:Would you like me to stop drawing you? I figured this might make you a little more...reserved than usual.
Sucrose:It’s just a lot to take in. Like...a lot. I do feel honored though, in a way.
Albedo:Does this mean I have your permission to continue.
Sucrose:Y-Yes. Just please, tell me you move on to draw other features of mine. Maybe I could help and you can....do a full portrait *covers face* you know, like a model?
Albedo:Hmmm, that’s a good idea. It would definitely speed things along like hair and face. Thank you Sucrose. I’ll take you up on that offer. Now, was there something you wanted to discuss?
Sucrose:Actually, it can wait. I gotta....check on my flowers. *leaves flustered*
Albedo:Very well, I’ll be here. *puts notebook down*
.......
Albedo:*lays head on desk* (THANK THE GODS, SHE BELIEVED ME!!!)

His Truth | Albedo x Sucrose HC & Oneshot (ish)
Using the hc that Albedo is a homunculus, but the nature of this creature ranges across works of fiction I’ve seen, so the rest is based on my own interpretations;;
These two may be brainy in their respective fields of study, but romance is an entirely new ballpark for both of them
They’re both complete dorks when it comes to “wooing” a special someone, and are too shy to admit their feelings. At least for Sucrose, anyway. Albedo’s feelings are a bit more complicated, as he questions whether or not his feelings are even real.
Albedo isn’t human. His feelings aren’t human. It wouldn’t be fair to let Sucrose grow so close to him. It would only be a matter of time before he would lose control, losing whatever “self” he had managed to develop over the years.
At first, Albedo treated Sucrose like everyone else- slightly distant, but with respect. However, over time, he grew fonder of the other alchemist, of her devotion to alchemy and her sweet personality. Over and over, he’d insist that she could drop the “Mister”, but she never seemed to listen. It was this pressure, of Sucrose respecting him so much, that made him all the more convinced that she shouldn’t grow close to him. The real him wasn’t who she thought he was.
