Final Shoot
For my final portfolio/”Community” project shoot, I took a range of images to represent not only my personal aesthetic, but also the overall “Community’ theme. As I wanted to develop on my film photography from previous shoots, I chose to shoot more b&w 35mm images. However, when scanning my images in I accidentally selected a “Sepia” setting for my images; which resulted in very unique and surprisingly attractive outcomes. Most of my images were taking at the Ickworth National Trust Park, where I was able to utilise the rural surroundings and interesting architecture. One particular building that was quite run down, suited the aesthetic perfectly. I was able to take some very well composed and styled images that I will definitely be using in my portfolio.
As for the “Community” aspect, I took a few images at the local market. Here, I was able to capture people living there day-to-day lives which was quite an interesting concept. To improve from my shoot, I would have potentially generated a few more images at the National Trust Park, as the location was quite unique and fun to shoot in. This is something I can easily achieve in future projects.

Self Branding
Here, I have produced a selection of different self-branded logos/visuals to use in my portfolio. I experimented with different fonts and tones to match my portfolio style and aesthetic. Out of these logos, I have chosen a few that I may feature in the first page of my final portfolio; in order to make my portfolio more customised and personal to me.

Off-site Film Shoot
At the beginning of this project, I aimed to produce more images and visuals from independent sessions; outside of college. During this shoot, I wanted to build on my portfolio and “Community” outcomes; so I chose to shoot some images around a community using 35mm b&w film. I think the images I took were exactly what I wanted out of the shoot, and featured the same grainy/blurry style as my previous outcomes. I really wanted to aim for a grungy, 90s aesthetic throughout this project which is why I have mostly used 90s styling and film. I think my skill development with film photography has advanced quite a bit throughout this project, and I have enjoyed learning these new skills and processes.
To improve from this shoot, I will continue to experiment with my use of film in future shoots. I will also try to experiment more with camera settings (exposure, focus, etc.) I am really looking forward to producing more imagery and assembling my portfolio.

Valblv
Valbvl is an artist who specialises in fashion-related, monochromatic visuals. Her work is largely influenced by her career in the fashion industry, as well as her interest and commitment to strict colour scheme. From her work, you can clearly tell that she enjoys the use of cool/blue tones. I think her work is very unique and distinctive, however, it is not something I would be interested in looking further into. Although, I really enjoy the subjects of her visuals and the compositions of her pieces. Valbvl links closely to the tonal styling shoot I carried out earlier in the project.

Initial Shoot (outcomes)
Earlier on in this project, I carried out a film shoot using 35mm colour film; which I had to have developed. I have since received the images back and I am quite pleased with the outcomes. My aim for this shoot was to generate visuals based on my initial moodboards/ideas. I feel I was successful in this, as my images were quite similar to the aesthetic of those I had researched. The majority of my pictures did come out quite blurry, however, I do not think it devalued the aesthetic and style of the images. In fact, I really enjoyed the grain/blurriness of the images. I feel it created a contrast to the other images I have generated throughout this project.

Tonal Styling Shoot
Here, I have generated a variety of images using different colour schemes matched with a complimentary outfit. The aim for this shoot was to follow a strict colour scheme that worked well with an outfit, and I feel I was successful in this. I quite liked the outcomes I produced, and think they look good aesthetically. For this project, I did not really want to use a lot of bright tones in my work, however, I think these images would be useful for my portfolio. I did not use any professional equipment for this shoot, besides the colour backdrops. All my images were shot using my Iphone camera, but I was still pleased with the quality of my visuals.
Moving forward, I will probably not generate images like this as they do not really suit the aesthetic and style of my other work. I did, however, enjoy the styling aspect of the shoot and how the outfits worked with the backdrops.

COLORS Studio
COLORS is a diverse and inclusive company that focuses on promoting up-and-coming artists. The brand, started in 2016, has had many celebrity guests such a Jorja Smith and Billie Eilish; in addition to the lesser known artists they feature. A key staple of the brand is their use of tones and colour scheme for each artist. The artists are asked to choose a colour and an outfit that compliments it, which makes for an aesthetically pleasing and bold visual outcome.
This brand links to this project through its similarity to a tonal styling shoot I am participating soon. In this shoot I will be using different colour backdrops with a complimentary outfit to produce outcomes with a consistent colour scheme. I am looking forward to this shoot, and will be referring to COLORS for inspiration.

Film Shoot
This was one of the best shoots I have participated in, and I was really pleased with the outcomes I produced. Film photography is something I have always really enjoyed aesthetically, and I really enjoy the process of shooting and developing film. During the first year of my course, I did not use film as much as I wanted to, so this year I am definitely going to be shooting a lot more film photographs. Overall, I really enjoyed the visuals I was able to generate, and I will be definitely be using them towards a final outcome in this project and future projects.
For this shoot, I used a Canon AF35M automatic camera and 35mm b&w film (200/36). I was originally meant to use a Hasselblad 120mm camera, but I did not receive the film in time for the shoot. I am aiming to use this camera next week, as the outcomes are often really impressive and sharp.
I chose to shoot mostly on location, but also shot using a dark studio set up. Fortunately, the camera I used was an automatic so I did not have to worry about ensuring the light exposure and focus was correct. However, I have used manual cameras before and I am not opposed to shooting using this method.
After shooting my 36 frames, I had to develop my images. To do this, I first unravelled my film and placed it into a film developing tank. Next, I prepared my chemicals needed to develop the film. For b&w film, you first use 30ml of developer mixed with 270ml of water. This is poured into the tank and agitated for 6 minutes. After this you rinse with 300ml of water for about 30 seconds. Next, I used 60ml of fixative combined with 240ml of water. This is agitated for about 3 minutes and emptied. Lastly, the tank is rinsed out with water a few times until the chemicals are filtered out. I then hung my film in a drying cupboard and scanned my negative images to create an inverted, digital image.
I was so pleased with the visuals I was able to create in this session, and I do not feel there was any areas to improve on. However, if I had to choose an area of improvement from this shoot, it would most likely be the volume of images taken. This is something I can easily accomplish moving forwards, as I am going to be using film more throughout the rest of this year.

Designing a Creative CV
In this session, I designed and created a CV in Illustrator using different types of graphics and other design elements. The purpose of the creative CV I designed is for potential future jobs in creative industries. A unique and interesting design would mean a distinctive CV that stands out to employers. I really enjoyed designing my CV and I would definitely use it for future job opportunities. The icons I used in the skills section were taken from google images and edited in photoshop. I think these were really effective in adding a unique element to my CV

Initial Shoot
Today I generated a selection of images using film, that I am waiting to have developed. In addition to these images, I also shot a few images using my phone camera to evidence my shoot.
The camera I used to take my film photos was a Pentax K1000 manual camera (35mm). I initially aimed to use my personal film camera (Canon ML auto 35mm), but I encountered issues with the camera during my shoot. After transferring my remaining exposures to the Pentax camera, I was able to create some really cool images that I am excited to see.
I decided to use a white studio set up with minimal props and lighting. When taking photographs, I was constantly referring to my initial moodboard for inspiration and influence. I think I was able to successfully mimic the work of Wolfgang Tillmans, who is an artist I really enjoyed while researching into the project theme of Community. I think these images will be useful for both my portfolio and Beyond the Frame outcomes.

Initial Shoot Moodboard
For this project, I really want to focus on my own style and preferences. In my portfolio work, I am going to be using previous images I have taken throughout the time I have been at college; as well as a wide range of images I will take during this project. I feel I have shown my ability to adapt to other styles and aesthetics, so I am looking forward to further showcasing my creativity and skills.

Wolfgang Tillmans
Wolfgang Tillmans is a German photographer known for observing and capturing his surroundings in impressive and unique imagery. He is also known largely for his portrait photography of the 80s/90s club scene, youth and LGBTQ. Tillmans is currently based in London, and has work featured in the Tate Modern as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
I really enjoy Tillmans abstract approach to his photography work; especially his focus on individuality and sexuality. I feel his work directly links to the theme of ‘Community’ through these areas of his photography as he is capturing people in social and intimate settings. I think this would be an interesting subject matter to explore, and will be practical considering the COVID-19 restrictions in place during this project.
I am definitely considering taking inspiration from Tillmans work, as I feel it represents my initial ideas for this project. His style of imagery is exactly what I would want to present in my portfolio work, and suits my personal aesthetic preferences. I am looking forward to exploring similar artists in detail and gaining knowledge and ideas from their works.
(Tillmans initially shot on film, but recently converted to digital cameras)

Henry J Keith III
Henry J Keith III is an LA-based film photographer who has gained recognition for his amazing imagery from the BLM protests this year. For this project, I will be researching the theme of ‘Community’, and I think his work captures community so well. Apart from the aesthetic and quality of his images, I also really enjoyed the message behind his work. He captures a community coming together to fight oppression and racism through powerful visuals and candid photographs. After brainstorming some ideas around the theme of ‘Community’, I have decided that following ideas around protests and racial oppression is something I am really interested in.
Being a POC myself, the protests and ongoing fight against racism is something I am really passionate about. I feel I could produce some really interesting and unique ideas, and portray a similar message through my imagery. I will continue to research further into artists such as Keith, as I am really intrigued to see other artists takes’ on these global protests and racial issues.
(Keith uses B&W 35mm ISO 400)
