jake didn’t know why he thought this would be a good idea.
the bus stop near the dorms was usually deserted — quiet, semi-abandoned, a little tragic, but perfect for private conversations. he’d walked past it a hundred times, always empty except for the occasional bird poop or wind-swept candy wrapper. that’s why he picked it.
so obviously, the universe decided today was the day to throw a festival there.
jake was standing awkwardly in the middle of an overcrowded shelter, body wedged firmly between a cranky businessman whose suitcase kept jabbing him in the shin, and a tiny old woman who kept muttering something about “why are the kids always so sweaty these days” every time she looked up at him.
he wiped his palms on his jeans for the fourth time.
it had started as nerves. he was supposed to be chill. cool. maybe even mysterious, if the weather helped. he wasn’t expecting an entire crowd of office people, some freshmen yelling about an economics quiz, a couple making out like they were in a low-budget music video, and one man eating kimchi from a ziploc bag.
rain drizzled gently against the plastic roof above, turning into a sudden splat as someone tried to shove their way under with an umbrella the size of a parachute. jake ducked instinctively, getting a mouthful of someone's elbow.
“sorry,” the umbrella guy grunted, not sounding sorry.
jake just sighed. this was his fault. he could’ve just texted her something stupid like “u up?” or “hey loser meet me at the court”. but no. he had to do it nicely. in person because his mother raised a nice, sweet, romantic boy.
now he was standing there, squished, clammy, and entirely un-romantic.
meanwhile, three dorm buildings away, yn was a mess.
she had tripped twice getting out of the shower, one sock was missing, and she had just realised her tank was very much on backwards. she didn’t even know why she was running. it wasn’t like he gave her a time. he even said, “come when you can. i’ll wait.”
and that somehow made her want to sprint across campus like it was the olympics.
it was raining harder now, thunder growling somewhere in the distance. she skidded to a stop at the door, staring into the downpour.
“…i forgot my umbrella,” she muttered.
there was one near the door, but it was broken. the last time she used it, the wind turned it inside out so violently it looked like it tried to do a backflip and failed. all she had now was hope and a keroppi tank top.
until she spotted a little girl walking with her mom, dressed in a sparkly pink raincoat and proudly holding the tiniest barbie umbrella known to mankind. it was neon pink, glittery, and barely big enough to cover a chin. it was also perfect.
yn approached slowly. carefully. casually.
“hey,” she said, kneeling a little, “that’s a really cool umbrella. you know what would make it cooler?”
the little girl blinked up at her, suspicious. “…what?”
“a chocolate bar. and five stickers. all yours. if you let me borrow it for ten minutes.”
the mom stared. the child stared. yn smiled like this was totally normal behavior.
“fine,” the kid said, holding it out. “but you owe me.”
“i respect your hustle,” yn said, accepting it solemnly.
she stepped into the rain, barbie umbrella barely shading her forehead, and started running.
jake saw her the moment she turned the corner and his expression twitched—because what in the cartoon character was she doing.
barbie umbrella tilted sideways, sweats clinging to her legs, tank top drenched enough to spell out the keroppi’s little froggy expression on her chest, and wet socks squelching in her slides. her hair was half-stuck to her forehead like it had given up on life halfway through the run.
she looked… miserable. and ridiculous. and kind of unfairly cute about it.
he let out a short laugh through his nose and instantly got a disapproving glare from the businessman beside him, who had just received a wet newspaper to the face by someone else trying to squeeze into the already overstuffed bus stop.
jake leaned forward to get a better look, only to immediately bonk foreheads with the old lady next to him who had decided now was the time to lean over and dig through her purse.
“sorry—ow, sorry,” he muttered, trying to untangle himself.
by the time he finally managed to wedge himself out of the gap between the two strangers (losing what little dignity he had in the process), yn had already arrived, puddle water clinging to her ankles like betrayal.
he reached out on instinct, grabbing her arm and tugging her into the shelter before she could say anything or shiver herself into another timeline.
“you look like you lost a fight with a kiddie pool,” he said, the corner of his mouth twitching.
she scowled up at him under the barbie umbrella, which was now tragically bent sideways and still dripping water onto her shoulder.
“i bribed a child for this, okay? respect the hustle.”
“i respect the attempt,” he said, grinning as he reached for her umbrella and folded it closed with a dramatic snap, tucking it under his arm. “can’t say much for the execution though.”
“i hate you,” she muttered, crossing her arms—then immediately uncrossing them because her arms were soaked and she felt gross and cold and weirdly exposed.
jake must’ve noticed. before she could say anything else, he was already shrugging off his jacket—black, oversized, somehow still warm despite the humid weather—and looping it over her shoulders like it was a reflex.
yn blinked at him, caught off guard. the weight of it settled on her like a hug. like safety. then he moved her by the shoulders to be the one under the shelter of the barely spacious bus stand, while he stood with the rain soaking his back.
“...you’ll get wet,” she muttered, her voice a little smaller than usual.
jake shrugged, not looking at her. “i’m already wet. and you look like you’re ten minutes away from catching pneumonia and screaming at a nurse about it.”
“i’d like to scream at a nurse on principle.”
“i know,” he said, amused. “that’s why i brought a jacket.”
they were standing close now. closer than she expected. the bus stop wasn’t big—and with all the other people pressed against the opposite side, they’d somehow ended up in the only semi-empty corner, facing each other, his hand still gently hovering near her arm from where he’d pulled her in.
she could smell his stupid clean-shampoo-smelling-hair, feel the light graze of his knuckles against her elbow. he was looking at her like he didn’t mind the rain or the puddles or the soaked barbie umbrella slowly dripping onto his shoe.
neither of them moved. neither of them wanted to, maybe.
it was the kind of closeness that snuck up on you—not the loud, flirty kind they were used to. not the insults-hiding-heartbeats kind. just something... quiet. and new. and warm, despite everything around them being damp and cold and noisy.
“you okay?” he asked, his voice a little softer now.
she wanted to say yes. but her socks were wet. her feet were freezing. her heart was thudding too loud. and she couldn’t stop looking at his face. so instead, she nodded once. then looked away.
it was peaceful until they realised where they were, snapping out of their small bubble.
the tension wasn’t awful. it was just… loud. not their words. not their thoughts. not the careful glances between them or the half-smiles tugging at their lips.
it was everything else. like the way a toddler somewhere near the front of the shelter kept screaming “BUSSSS” every time a car passed. or the old businessman huffing dramatically every three seconds, like he was trying to power the rainclouds with his breath. or the suspiciously romantic sniffles coming from the couple that had been making out two inches from them since she arrived.
yn shuffled slightly, the wooden edge of the bench behind her digging into her lower back. she was still swaddled in jake’s oversized jacket, and now that the initial chaos had passed, all that was left was… this. awkward, nervous air. close proximity. and at least a hundred ears, all within five feet of them.
she glanced up at jake, whose shoulders were slightly hunched and he prayed like he wanted the rain to dissolve him. he gave her a sheepish smile.
“i was kinda hoping we’d be alone for this,” he murmured, leaning in a little so only she could hear.
she snorted. “what, you don’t like confessing your feelings with a live audience?”
he shook his head with mock seriousness. “honestly? i think i blacked out when the man with the kimchi stared directly into my soul.”
she giggled, hand coming up to cover her mouth, only to stop short when she noticed the old woman across from them, halfway pressed under the same shelter, was now very openly staring at them. like, unblinkingly. eyes sharp. neck craned forward. pure investigative journalism.
jake followed her line of sight, and they both froze.
the lady didn’t even pretend to look away until jake made exaggerated eye contact and raised both brows.
then she looked up at the sky with a casual hmmph like she hadn’t just been violating their privacy with pensioner-level judgment.
“…okay that’s terrifying,” jake whispered.
“she’s invested. she wants to know if we kiss.”
jake choked on air.
yn smiled, then glanced down—fidgeting with the sleeves of his jacket that hung well past her hands. her fingers twisted into the fabric softly, something warm fluttering in her chest.
“…i meant what i said earlier,” she mumbled.
jake tilted his head. “which part?”
“that… maybe i like you,” she said, still not meeting his eyes. “even if you were super annoying about the court thing and maybe almost gave me brain damage in the beginning.”
a beat passed. then she peeked up at him.
jake was beaming. not smirking, not grinning—just full-on beaming. cheeks a little red. eyes doing that soft sparkle thing. like he’d just won a prize he hadn’t even entered to win.
“i meant it too,” he said, voice quieter now, more sincere. “i didn’t even realize it was happening, honestly. it was just…” he laughed under his breath. “one day you were yelling at me about schedule slots and the next i was looking for excuses to see you.”
yn stared.
he kept going, his eyes flickering between her and the crowd, like his words were too big for just them. “you make everything feel… less annoying. even the court, even the fights, even losing. i don’t mind if it’s you.”
she opened her mouth to respond—
and then the bus honked. loudly. right in their faces.
“oh my god—”
“what the hell—”
they both flinched so hard, yn nearly slammed into jake’s chest, and jake actually yelped, his hand reaching the bench like that would defend them from the sheer sonic violence of the horn.
the old lady made a noise like she was judging them for having ears.
they blinked at each other and then they both started laughing.
“i hate this city,” yn wheezed.
“i hate this bus,” jake added, clutching his chest.
“no like why did it have to honk right when you were about to get all soft on me—”
“i was gonna say something poetic too, like ‘you ruin my peace in the best way’ or some cheesy garbage,” jake huffed dramatically, looking deeply offended. “and now it’s gone. the moment’s ruined.”
“rip your one shot,” she teased.
he grinned. “one shot? girl, i’ve been sending anonymous tweets to the confessions page like i’m writing a diary. i got material.”
that made her laugh harder.
soon, the crowd began thinning and then it was quiet again. just them.
they both slowly sat down on the cold metal bench, shoulders brushing lightly.
jake shifted, clearing his throat. “okay. attempt two. now that no one is honking at us.”
she turned to look at him, knees angled toward his. her hands were still fiddling with his jacket sleeves, but she smiled—soft and open.
he looked nervous again. his fingers tapped against his knee. but his voice stayed steady.
“i really like you, yn,” he said, finally. “like… annoyingly so. like i don’t even want to, half the time, because you make fun of my forehead and you’ve got the arm of a greek god when it comes to volleyball—but i still do. i like you. a lot.”
yn stared at him.
he was looking at her with everything he was feeling painted across his face, cheeks flushed, lip tucked into his teeth like he was bracing for impact.
she felt her heart squeeze. because somehow, that made it all even better and then she smiled.
“you’re such a dork.”
he exhaled. “okay, but do you like this dork?”
“…i might,” she said, nudging his knee with hers. “a lot.”
jake looked like he was trying not to combust.
Tumblr media
the rain had thinned into a misty drizzle by the time they stepped off the bus stop’s cracked pavement, puddles reflecting the streetlights in faint glimmers. jake had quietly suggested a walk—half to avoid heading straight back, and half because he wasn’t ready to let this version of the evening end just yet. to his quiet relief, she nodded.
they cut through the side path skirting the campus perimeter—past the chain-link fence tangled with vines, the old brick wall behind the admin block that nobody really monitored after 8 pm, the back of the library where the lamps flickered like old christmas lights. it was peaceful. muted.
yn’s feet squelched a little in her slides as she walked beside him, the oversized jacket hanging off her shoulders like armor. her hands were stuffed into the pockets, sleeves bunched up comically to her elbows, but she didn’t complain once. in fact, she was talking. a lot.
not in the nervous kind of way either. just… wildly. arms flailing at every turn of the story, volume rising and falling with her thoughts, like the dam had burst and now everything she’d held in the past month was pouring out: from chaotic court drama, to someone stealing her last juice box from the dorm fridge (“i labelled it with three angry faces, jake, three!”), to how she used to fake an ankle sprain in high school just to skip warm-ups.
jake listened. and listened. and listened. not because he had to, but because her voice did something weirdly magnetic to his chest, like tugging at a wire that had been half-strung since the day they met.
he chuckled at something she said about dani weaponising debate speeches as insults, lips curling into a soft smile, when—
SMACK.
it wasn’t hard. just the back of her hand swinging too wide during a particularly animated gesture—straight into his cheek.
jake blinked, head jerked slightly to the side, his mouth forming a dumb “oof.”
she froze immediately her hands cupping over her mouth. “oh my god, i’m so—jake—i didn’t mean to—shit—are you okay??” her voice cracked in panic as her hands flew to cup his face. she cradled his jaw like she’d broken him in half.
her palms were cold and damp, and she was close. too close. “i just got so carried away—are you bleeding? you’re not bleeding, right? why do your cheekbones stick out so much, god—did i bruise you?”
he hadn’t said a word yet. just let her tilt his face left and right, her brows furrowed in the deepest concern he’d ever seen aimed at his dumb face.
and somewhere in the middle of that, it hit him.
he was so, so screwed.
because all he could see was the curve of her worried lips and the shimmer in her lashes from the rain and the way her thumb brushed just under his eye like she wanted to fix something. her mouth was a breath away, her eyes flicking over his like they weren’t quite sure where to land.
jake nodded—barely, slowly—as if trying not to break whatever moment this had become.
“i’m okay,” he murmured, voice soft. too soft.
their eyes locked, and for a second, neither of them moved. neither of them breathed. the night buzzed with something warm and suspended.
then jake’s gaze flickered down to her lips. barely. just once.
and she noticed. she froze, blinking, and then started to pull away—“sorry, i didn’t mean to crowd you, i just—”
but his hand came up lightly, fingers brushing against the side of her waist. barely there. not holding her back, just… anchoring her. a touch that said it’s okay.
her hand stilled where it had been on his cheek, then slipped to his shoulder. she didn’t move further.
jake took that as his answer.
so he leaned in. carefully. slowly. as if afraid she might vanish if he rushed.
and when their lips met—god.
it was warm.
warm and sweet and full of things neither of them had the courage to say out loud. his breath hitched, fingers tensing slightly at her waist, while hers moved instinctively—soft hands cupping his jaw now, thumb brushing the side of his neck.
it wasn’t perfect. their noses bumped a little. her wet slides squeaked awkwardly on the sidewalk. the streetlamp above them flickered once, then twice.
but none of that mattered, because she kissed him back.
and jake forgot where he was, forgot how to stand properly, forgot his name probably—because all he could focus on was the way her lips parted just slightly to meet his, how her hand curled into the back of his neck like maybe she’d been waiting just as long, how kissing her felt less like lightning and more like falling into something that finally made sense.
she pulled back a second later, barely—foreheads brushing, eyes wide and cheeks flushed.
“wow,” she whispered, breathless.
jake swallowed. “you hit me and then kissed me. this is a lot.”
she laughed, nervous and delighted, her hands still cupping his face. “you deserved it.”
“i did,” he agreed, eyes locked on her again. “but i’d take that slap again for that kiss.”
she blushed. hard. he grinned wider.
