Oak Grove Lutheran School announces ambitious campaign for new buildings
Oak Grove Lutheran School announces ambitious campaign for new buildings
FARGO, N.D. — Oak Grove Lutheran School leaders today announced plans for new construction on both its Fargo campuses, describing a fundraising campaign designed to raise at least $26 million for capital improvements.
The Acorns to Oaks campaign, announced at a special event, will address the needs around a growing student body. The institutional master plan for the school’s historic North Campus features a new science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) center and new commons on the original Oak Grove campus that serves students in grades 6-12. The campaign concepts also depict a new gymnasium and new music room at the South Campus, serving students from age 3 through grade 5.
“Today is a major milestone in the history of Oak Grove — nearly 117 years of faith-based education and counting,” said Bob Otterson, the school’s president. “The facilities from this campaign will impact today’s students and subsequent generations of Grovers, promising the right environments for effective teaching, learning and student development.”
Campaign leaders report that the school has secured more than $22.4 million in early gifts and pledges toward the primary goal of $26 million in building funds. Further, Otterson announced a $5 million pledge from anonymous donors that matches all gifts of $500,000 or more after May 1, 2023, driving the campaign toward an aspirational goal of $30 million or more.
“Donors who care deeply about Oak Grove, its students and its mission have offered us an inspiring opportunity to complete the facilities the school needs now,” Otterson said. “These generous supporters have enabled the real possibility for us to create additional spaces that will enhance the well-rounded experiences families expect from this school.”
Matt Hanson and Danielle Paulus were introduced as co-chairs of the Acorns to Oaks campaign. Hanson is a vice president at Scheels. He and his wife, Dawn, have two daughters at Oak Grove. Paulus is director of community engagement at Dakota Medical Foundation. She and her husband, Ken, have three children at the school. Jon Rustvang, a leader in Oak Grove’s last campaign, serves as honorary chair of the school’s campaign committee.
The 35,000 new square feet on the North Campus will include modern science labs, rooms designed for teaching mathematics, additional classrooms and collaborative spaces for small-group teaching and learning. The STEM center and commons will be constructed on the footprint of the Eid Center, a one-story facility used since 1985 for foodservice and group events.
The key component of 15,000 new square feet on the South Campus will be an activities center that reduces scheduling stress on the existing gymnasium which also is used for lunch, chapel, large assemblies and indoor recess on inclement weather days. A new music room will be added between existing structures.
The matching challenge creates scenarios for school leaders to raise additional funds to enlarge the new gymnasium at the South Campus, to construct additions to the Scheels Center for the Performing Arts and to complete renovations in Arvid Benson Hall. Those extra spaces bring the overall construction estimate to $30 million.
Campaign volunteers and Oak Grove leaders will be actively raising funds to reach the $26 million primary goal for building funds and also soliciting gifts and pledges toward the aspirational $30 million goal. School leaders expect construction to start on both campuses in spring 2024.
Oak Grove Lutheran School serves 720 students from preschool through grade 12 on two campuses in Fargo. The school started in 1906 as the Oak Grove Lutheran Ladies Seminary, a high school for girls. Boys joined the student body in 1926. The school added its South Campus elementary and the Kjos Early Learning Center in 2005. Oak Grove’s mission calls for expressing God’s love by nurturing students for academic achievement, lifelong Christian commitment, and loving service throughout the world. The school has been accredited continuously since 1926 by Cognia and its predecessor organizations.

Jumping into Basketball
International students jump into basketball at Oak Grove Lutheran
By the time students are high school juniors, most have spent years in their selected extracurricular activities.
But this year, Oak Grove Lutheran’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team welcomed two juniors who were newcomers—both to the sport and to the United States.
Esther Mwiza from Rwanda and Saki Fukuhara from Japan arrived in Fargo-Moorhead just before school started last fall. As they acclimated to new homes, school, culture and climate, they found making friends to be a bit of a challenge.
So they joined the basketball team.
Saki had played basketball for one year of elementary school in Japan, and Esther had played “just for fun” in Rwanda.
Saki recalled being very nervous at the start of the season. Esther, who had been a member of a high-level dance group in Rwanda, described it as “kind of devastating. You’re used to being one of the best, one who teaches others, and now you’re on the bottom,” she said.
But both were quickly pulled into drills, working on dribbling, shooting and plays alongside their teammates, many of whom were building on years’-worth of skills.
“It takes a lot of courage for them to step out of their comfort zones,” said Oak Grove girls’ basketball coach Chad Slyter. “For them to want to be included is pretty special.”
Esther and Saki said it was hard work, but it paid off.
“During practice, people were cheering each other,” Saki recalled. “I just love that.”
In fact, she said, even during free-throw drills, where players took turns shooting, the support continued. “If you missed (your shot), people have to run because of you,” she recalled. “Even so, everyone cheered for each other.”
As the season ends, both Esther and Saki said they carry special moments with them: Saki recalls the three-point shot she made at the beginning of one game. Esther remembers being given the chance to take a shot in the final seconds of another.
“I feel like they’re trusting me now,” Esther said, “because they’re giving me the last shot.”
Coach Slyter said having Esther and Saki on the court was good for the whole team. “To see their excitement is one thing, but to see their teammates excited for them is great as well,” he said.
Now both Esther and Saki say they know so many more people.
“It increased their friendships tenfold,” said Kristi Kegel, international student coordinator. “It increased their English, it increased their self-assurance and self-esteem—all of it. It did amazing things, and that courage goes with them.”

Be Part of the Band!
Hear the OGLS Spring Band Concert—and play along with the Generations Band!
Audience members rarely get to perform in the concert they’re attending, but that’s the plan for Oak Grove’s 2023 Spring Band Concert on Sunday, April 30.
After the student groups perform, parents, grandparents, Oak Grove staff, siblings and alumni will join with students to create the Generations Band, playing “Learn to Fly” by the Foo Fighters.
Why invite people to be part of a spontaneous band?
“I love that it shows that you can be anything—doctor, computer programmer, stay-at-home parent, engineer, college professor—and play an instrument,” said Oak Grove director of bands Renee O’Connor. Some of those who’ve signed up to participate claim not to have played their instruments in decades, she added.
This Oak Grove tradition started in 2015, and Missy Wenstrom, administrative assistant at the Elementary School, has brought her flute and played in it every year.
“It’s fun to take it out and remember how to play,” she said, adding that she was a dedicated flutist only from sixth through ninth grades, although she later got talked into playing contrabass clarinet. “The look of ‘I didn’t know you could play that!’ on the students’ faces is priceless.”
Part of what makes the Generations and similar bands possible is flexible or “flex-band” music, which has emerged over the past couple of decades, O’Connor said. In contrast to traditional arrangements, the parts in flexible music are not instrument-specific, so each part can be played by various instruments. For example, if a piece traditionally calls for a French horn, and the band has no French horn player, a different instrument can take that part.
“Flex-band expands the repertoire of what smaller bands can play,” she said.
Sound intriguing?
Come and hear the 50 students who will be performing with Oak Grove’s Sixth Grade, Middle School and High School bands, and then join in the Generations Band. Email O’Connor [[email protected]] to get the music ahead of time—or, if you have a common instrument, just show up and play.
“Give it a shot—you’ll be fine,” she said.
  The Details
Sunday, April 30, at the Scheels Center for the Performing Arts
6 pm—Recital Hour: Performances by students who are going to the state music contest or who have special pieces to share
6:30 pm—Performances by the Sixth Grade, Middle School and High School bands, followed by the Generations Band

Senior Partners with Local Healthcare Professional
Oak Grove Students Try Out Careers for Credit
Oak Grove High School senior Emily Meidinger has always been interested in healthcare. Both of her parents work in the medical field, and she likes helping people. But for a long time, she wasn’t sure which specific area to pursue.
Then, in 10th grade, Emily’s dentist found a cavity in one of her teeth. As she described how she was going to fill the cavity, Emily got really curious.
“I’d never had to have anything done to my teeth,” said Emily, now a senior. “I just wanted to know what was happening.”
Emily’s dentist, Dr. Stephanie Gruchalla, a parent of two Oak Grove students, was happy to explain it all.
That conversation led to Emily shadowing Gruchalla in the summer and now doing a semester-long cooperative work experience at Gruchalla’s office.
Twice a week, Emily dons a dental office coat, goggles and a mask, and observes Gruchalla as she treats patients—including Oak Grove president Bob Otterson, who recently went in for a filling! Emily also has been learning skills, such as how to clean and set up rooms, and sterilize equipment. Sometimes Gruchalla sends Emily out to visit other dental-related offices.
“I feel like I’m learning so much about dentistry but also for my life too,” Emily said. She described how conversations with Gruchalla have helped her prepare for university and dental school, and given her insights into different ways workplaces function.
That is the goal of the program, said Lynsey Rittenbach, Oak Grove special services teacher. Students gain an understanding of a profession and also learn about workplace culture, communication, responsibility and more. In the process, they earn course credit for up to two semester-long experiences.
“They get to experience the career and hopefully solidify what they want to do,” Rittenbach said. Of course, she adds, sometimes students realize the field they chose is not what they want to do. “That’s equally helpful,” she said.
Cooperative work experiences are one way Oak Grove students meet North Dakota’s goal of ensuring every student is prepared for graduation, whether they are headed for post-secondary education, the workforce or military service.
Over the past several years, Oak Grove students have had cooperative work experiences in the areas of medicine, the electrical trade, law enforcement, construction, administrative work, engineering, used car sales, real estate and shelf stocking, among others. Between five and 10 students participate each semester, keeping a weekly log of their experiences. At the end of the semester, they do a presentation, and create a resume and cover letter relevant to the work they observed.
As a mentor in the program, Gruchalla said she’s enjoyed explaining her work to a young person who is interested in the field. Emily is the third Oak Grove student she has hosted at her office.
“It’s beneficial to the dental community to have good people following in our footsteps. People need to observe,” she said. “Emily’s learning, ‘Is this right for me?’”
These experiences also help the community in general, said Aimee Zachrison, Oak Grove academic dean, because students learn about interesting jobs and careers that are available locally.
“It’s a win win win win situation,” Zachrison said. “Kids see what’s available in the community and what’s happening in the community, and the community gets the benefit of working with kids.”
If you are interested in offering a cooperative work experience to an Oak Grove student, please get in touch with Lynsey Rittenbach at Oak Grove Lutheran School.

Oak Grove Theatre Arts Presents…Footloose!
This show is rated PG 13 – language may not be suitable for all audiences
The explosive movie musical bursts onto the live stage! With dynamic new songs augmenting the powerhouse hits from its bestselling Oscar-nominated score, Footloose celebrates the exhilaration of youth, the wisdom of listening to one another, and the power of forgiveness.
When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. But he’s not prepared for the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, who is determined to exercise control over the town’s youth. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges pins a father longing for the son he lost against a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.
