BUT THE FALL WILL GLORIOUS

Okay, so earlier when I said it didn’t matter which offensive tackle the Saints took, I was wrong.  Take this guy… Derek Sherrod.

He’s not the most physically-gifted guy in the class, and he won’t wow anyone with his combine numbers of ability to take his shirt off, but he’s the best offensive tackle in this class, and what’s more, he should be available at No. 24 overall.

Sherrod is the best technician of the group.  At least, in pass protection.  Anthony Castonzo gets all the hype as far as skill goes, but he has a tendency to overextend, lunge and whiff at speedy edge-rushers.  Sherrod doesn’t do that.  He plays with great foot-relation, relaxes into his stance, bends at the knees and carries a more compact, solider frame. 

He mirrors defensive ends very well off the snap, exhibiting an accurate kick step that never leaves him strung out and immobile.  He slides smoothly toward the outside and always maintains excellent hand placement, gaining initial leverage and controlling the defender.  

Okay, maybe not always, but you get the point.  He’s good.  He can pass protect. And he’s no slouch as a run blocker.

Go get him, Saints.  Please don’t make Drew throw it so quickly every play again. Please.
