Sy POV
I was damn lucky. It was only a recon mission, and I was even luckier that we managed to finish it early without havin’ any casualties. I sigh; I’m really getting too old for this shit. I should quit while I’m ahead. I’ve been feelin’ like this for a loonngg time but haven’t made moves to do anythin’ else. But with the recent news I feel like it’s time to find somethin’ else. My grandparents are gettin’ along and with Pop havin’ a stroke this is the push I need to find somethin’ that aint’ active duty. Maybe I can train soldiers or some shit, become a paper pusher on base but one thing is for sure, I can’t be riskin’ my life no more.
The boys and I arrive on base. Some offerin’ to take me home but I need time to myself first. Time to think alone. ‘Cause I know once I’m with my family I ain’t gon’ be alone for a long time.
I get BJ to drop me off at the diner; wantin’ to get somethin’ in me. I’m starvin’ and a coffee and some grub will do me some good.
I changed outta uniform on base, and am in civilian clothin wearin a hat. It feels weird bein’ on this side. I’d been in uniform 24/7 for the last three months.
I’m sittin’ at the back mindin my business when I see two ladies walk in from the corner of my eye. I pay them no mind until I hear a voice that’s been stuck in my head for months
“Thank you, Jebus! I’ve been dying for a feed for agesss”, Everly says. She looks like she’s been out late into the night and all mornin’. I look at my watch; it’s 6am. She’s wearing a tight white long sleeved v-neck top that’s tucked into some really tight ripped jeans and some strappy heels…fuck. It’s been three months since I’ve last seen her and she still looks so fuckin’ good.
“Good lord girl, that Kiwi slang is gon’ kill me one day” her friend Shayla teases her.
“You’ll get used to it, bo”, Everly winks at her as they make their way to a table diagonally in front of me. I didn’t realize that Lea had been sittin’ there that entire time.
They greet her and start orderin’ some food. I can’t help but stare at Everly.
“Sweet baby Jesus, I need to use the restroom. Lil’ one, didn’t you say you needed to as well?”, Shayla asks Everly as she gets up
“Yeah but you go first. I’m psyching myself up in going. Bodysuits are not ideal for the loo, you know?”, she’s playing around with the salt and pepper shakers.
“What the heck, girl. Next time wear somethin’ that’s fast access… for other things as well”, Shayla winks at her as she makes her way to the restroom
Everly just rolls her eyes and shakes her head. She turns to Lea.
“Sis, it was just meant to be dinner and drinks. It turned into clubbing!”, Everly gathers her hair and puts it up in a high ponytail…goddamn her hair is so long. I shake my head, hopin’ that will rid me of my questionable thoughts about her. She just walks into the goddamn diner, and she’s already got me. And she don’t even know it.
“Chica, what did you expect? It’s Shayla!”, Lea chastises her.
“Ugh, she’s trying to set me up with this guy from the club..AGAIN”, Everly mutters out.
“Well, are you going to tell her?”
“Tell her what exactly?”
“Uhhh, I don’t know… that you’re married!”, Lea sputters out
Everly throws her head back, groaning.
“Uuugggghhhhhh, last time I told someone that it went swimmingly”,
“Well if you want her to stop bugging you, you tell her. Plus she’s gonna kick your ass if she finds out you’ve been keeping it from her this entire time”
“And what exactly is that”, Shayla is back and slides on right beside Lea, looking between the two.
“Hmmm, that I’m not ready to date or go out or do anything yet with anyone”
“Babygirl! What about that guy from last night! Dang, he was fiine. Like fucking fine”, Shayla starts fanning herself to illustrate how apparently good lookin’ this guy was; I can’t help but sneer
“I’m good”, is all Everly says looking down at her manicured hand; trying to avoid eye contact.
“Well that fake wedding ring is sure doing a fine job of keeping them away! If I hadn’t told him he would’ve missed his shot. Cartier even, damn girl you bad and boujee for a ruse”
Lea is dead quiet as Everly winces. Shayla picks up on the shift of the mood.
“…wait a dang second… it is fake right..?”, Shayla asks slowly.
“And I’m going to the restroom, excuse me”, Lea nudges Shayla to give her space to get out. She successfully escapes leaving Everly on her own to deal with Shayla.
“Yeah about that…”, Everly’s scratching her head a grimace on her face
“Holy fucking shit, you’re actually married for real!? EVERLY KAIA RAKENA!”, the pure disbelief is evident on Shayla’s face
“Sshhh, not so loud!”, Everly tries to shush her but Shayla is on a roll.
“But not long, right? Can’t you get this shit annulled like ASAP?”, Shayla asks
“Yeah ‘cause 10 years isn’t a legitimate marriage, eh”, Everly mumbles out
“10 YEARS!?”, Shayla practically yells.
“Oh my god, Shayla. Keep it down!”, Everly hisses at her.
Fuck, even at this point I’d been caught wayyy off guard. I start choking on my food, needing coffee to wash it down. 10 years!? A whole goddamn decade!? How old is this girl!? I try be quiet to not draw attention to myself; luckily they’re too absorbed in their conversation to notice much of anything else.
“You’ve gotta be shittin’ me, right? This is some dumb prank you’re pullin’ on me”,
Lea’s back and reads the room, Shayla getting out so that Lea can get back in.
“So chica, you’ve told Shayla then?”, Lea asks
“Wait.. you knew this entire time!?”, Shaya spits out
“Who do you think picked her up from the airport!?”, Lea snaps back
At this point Everly just has her hands in her head, shaking it. Their food arrives givin’ them the time they need for shit to cool down.
“Girl, I expect you to tell me every dang thing about this 10 year marriage of yours”, Shayla demands as they start eating their food. Everly having gotten pancakes like last time.
“Trust me, it’s not as exciting as you think it is”, Everly mumbles over her food.
“Pfft, yeah right!”
“Well why do you think I’m here! It’s not that exciting if I’m on the other side of the world!”, Everly exclaims
“So this is the break you were tellin’ me about, huh?”, as Shayla sips on her coffee.
“It sure is. I’d like to thank Lea for that”
“It was my idea for her to take a year break, preferably in a different country”, Lea offers up.
'’Goddamn, what happened?”, Shayla asks. The initial anger of not knowin’ shit is gone now, she just looks worried.
“Ugh, that’s for another time”, Everly looks down at her phone, “Anyway, Lea we better get going soon. I need to check up on Jeb and keep Edie company”
“Of course, sis”
“Girl, you is gon’ need a Redbull”
“I sure do. Can we stop by a gas station so I can get one please?” Everly asks Lea. Lea nods.
“Do you need to stop by yours to grab anything?”, Lea offers
“Nah, should be all good. I think I have enough clothes”
“Wait, what? Have you been staying at the Syverson’s?”, Shayla asks, eyebrow raised.
“Yeah I have. It got hard going back and forth between mine and theirs so Edie offered for me to stay with them. Plus I didn’t like that Edie was all by herself in that house when she wasn’t at the hospital”, Everly explains, “if you guys will excuse me, I’ll be right back”.
She gets up and goes to the restroom while the rest of the girl’s keep on eatin’.
“...Is she okay?”, Shayla asks Lea once Everly is out of earshot.
“Hmmm, she will be. She’s been through a lot.. I know she doesn’t show it especially when she’s out and about with y’all. She's too goddamn busy being a clown and making everyone laugh, but she’s been through hell and back, and I don’t just mean her marriage. Promise me you’ll keep an eye on her when I ain’t around?”, Lea’s got a concerned look on her face; you can tell she really cares about Everly.
“For sure. You don’t even need to ask”
Everly comes back and the girl’s change the subject. They don’t chat much as they finish their food, not staying much longer as they pay and make their way to the parking lot.
My mind is still reeling from the info I just found out. Not only about how long Everly’s been married but that fact she’s been looking after my grandparents this entire time. Gran hadn’t mentioned anythin’ about Everly. Not only that I know the guest room hasn’t been ready in years, having become a makeshift storage room. I’d been meaning to tidy it out but haven’t had the time. I can take one guess in where Everly’s been sleeping…
I’d been itching to get to the hospital to see Pop, but I hadn’t realized till I got there that he ain’t the only one I’d been dyin’ to see. I know the last time I saw her it didn’t end too good, and I stormed out angry, not willin’ to listen to her. I Uber to the hospital and get there fairly quickly wit’ not much traffic around; and I’m grateful for it. I find that I’m the first one there; relieved to have some time with granddad by myself.
Seein’ Pop hooked up to all these machines; all these wires and shit comin’ outta him breaks my goddamn heart. I didn’t realize I’d be this affected until I actually got here. In my mind he’s always been big and strong; forever my hero in my heart and soul but the reality is the stroke had done him no good. I’ve never seen him so gaunt in my whole damn life.. Almost like he’s witherin’ away but hangin’ on by a thread. I can feel my heart breakin’ listenin’ to the machines beepin’, seein’ Pop’s chest go up and down in rough inhale and exhale.
I’ve seen grown men and women die for their country; witnessed them blown to bits, blood and guts everywhere. But seein’ Pop look almost lifeless like this hits differently.
I feel my eyes tearin’ up but I wipe them away quickly; angry that I hadn’t been here when it happened but also so goddamn relieved that I made it back wit’ him still kickin’, even if he is currently unconscious.
I sit there right against Pop’s hospital bed; his frail hand in mine, holdin’ it against my lips as I look on at him, and remember all the things he’s ever done for me. Grateful and so dang lucky to have him as my Poppa.
Yeah I lost my father young; and pains me deep. But this man right in front of me, has not only been a grandfather but a dad, too.
He’s been there for me through everythin’. The devastation of losing my parents, first fight I got into at school ‘cause some redneck dick was bullying the new Asian kid in town, taught me how to drive a stick, first heartbreak with Lily-Beth, betrayal from Wyatt, puttin’ up wit’ me when I fell into underage drinkin’ and fuckin’ around left, right, and center, and then supportin’ me when I joined the Army. How proud he was when I was made Captain.
My grandparents have been a solid rock in my life. I don’t know how long I’d been sitting there; so lost in my thoughts about everythin’ we've been through together. Reminiscing about the past; nostalgia pullin’ me deep down. I’d been starin’ into space; so outta focus that I don’t even realize that Gran had arrived… with Everly.
They’re surprised. I hadn’t told Gran I was on my way home. Gran comes around the bed; coming over to give me a hug. Everly frozen at the door; her big brown eyes wide.
“Oh, Jax. Thank the good Lord, you’re here”, Gran hugs me so tight, she’s trembling, crying.
“Gran, it’s alright. I’m here now, I’m here”, I hug her back just as tightly, rubbing her back trying to comfort her. It’s real hard seein’ Pop like this; I can’t even imagine what Gran is feelin’ right now. If I'm feelin’ this bad, she must be feeling it a hundred times worse. Pop is the love of her life; her soulmate. I just can’t imagine one without the other.
I look up to see Everly hoverin’ at the periphery of the room. I can tell she’s wantin’ to give us a moment alone; a moment of privacy.
Gran lets go, wipin’ her tears away, and turns around to motion for Everly to come over. She’s changed out of her heels and is now wearing some ballet flats. She’s also thrown on a long nude cardigan that stops just above her knees. She’s put her hair back down, her long black gray hair cascading down her back, her side bangs framing her face. She comes over slowly, apprehensive, but she’s got a small nervous smile on her face.
Gran puts her arm around Everly, tuckin’ her against herself, holding her close.
“Evie’s been nothin’ but the kindest, most thoughtful angel; being my constant companion while you’ve been away; I didn’t feel so alone havin’ her stay in the house. Taking me to and from the hospital everyday, even finishing work early for me.”, Gran looks over to Everly, “I don’t know what I would’ve done without you, sweet girl” and gives her a kiss on her head. Everly wraps arms around Gran, squeezing her tight. “Of course. Any time”, she answers.
Seeing them like this makes my heart swell. I can’t believe how kind and caring this girl has been, especially considerin’ how I left when we last saw each other. I need to thank her; truly thank her ‘cause I don’t know anyone who would go as far as she has for my family. And that means so much more than the world to me.
“Jax, Evie, can ya’ll get me somethin’ to eat at the hospital cafeteria, please? A coffee and a turkey sandwich would be nice”, Gran’s voice breaks through my thoughts, and I look over to Everly. She’s waitin’ on me to say somethin’, to make a move.
Gran thinks she’s being slick but I know what she’s up to. I know she wants me to go and fix things with Everly. Which is all good ‘cause that’s exactly what I wanna do, too.
“Course, Gran. Anythin’ else?”, I ask her.
“Naw, but grab yourselves somethin’ if y’all are hungry”, she tells me as she tries to hand me some cash; I wave her hand away as I start makin’ my way out, Everly following quietly behind me.
“No rush, y’all. Take your time”, if Gran could have a shit eatin’ grin on her face, this is what it’d look like. I shake my head; grinnin’. She thinks she’s really slick. She sits down on the chair beside Pop, taking his hand in hers as she starts talkin’ to him.
I stand and wait for Everly as she catches up with me. I can tell she don’t know what to make of me and the situation, and I don’t blame her.
“Hey, ba- Everly”, I quickly cough tryna mask what I really wanted to call her; though I know it ain’t right of me to do so.
“Hey, Jax..”, she’s walking slow beside me, starin’ down at her flats, her hands shoved into the pockets of her cardigan. Everly’s cautious; unsure.
“How ya been?”, I ask her. And I am genuinely curious. I wanna know everythin’ she’s been up to these past three months.
I can see her not expectin’ that but she answers anyway.
“Yeah not bad, thanks”, she looks up at me with the tiniest of smiles; just the corner crooked up. Her eyes still look hesitant, “I’m sorry about Jeb; I truly am. I can see how much your grandparents mean to you..”
“Thanks”, I clear my throat tryna not to get emotional.
We get to the cafeteria and get into line to grab Gran’s food. I’m scannin’ the display cabinets lookin’ to see if there was anythin’ worth munchin’ on.
“Can I get ya anythin’?”, I offer.
“No, thank you”, she shakes her head; always so polite.
“Would you be up to splittin’ a muffin wit’ me?”, I suggest. Everly looks a bit confused but says yes anyway.
I ordered Grans food to go, a muffin for Everly and I, and another coffee for myself. I get given a table number, and I make my way to one of the tables at the back corner, secluded from the majority of the folk around. Everly looks between the table and the way back to Poppa’s hospital room; clearly confused. I wait for her to get to me; gesturin’ for her to take the bench with the comfortable cushioned backrest and seat. I pull the chair out; takin’ a seat.

Everly POV
I wake to the sharp shrill of an alarm, luckily it’s turned off quickly. I groan, my neck is stiff from having slept funny.
I slowly open my eyes, blinking when I realise I’m wrapped up in large, heavy, warm arms.
“Boobie, what time is it?” I groan out, rubbing my eyes, shit doesn’t look right. I feel a rumble of laughter under me and a deep voice answers. One I’m not accustomed to waking up to.
“That a new nickname for me huh, baby?”
I jerk up and look to my side in horror, a sick feeling sinking in my stomach. I scramble looking for my glasses when I feel them on the coffee table.
It’s not who I think it is, and I’m not where I think I am. It hasn’t been long, and sometimes I’m disoriented when I wake up.
“Fuck, oh my god. I’m so sorry. Ho-how did we end up here?”, I ask Sy. I hold my hands tight together trying to stop them from shaking.
“It ain’t nothin’, sweet pea. You dozed off in the truck. I carried ya in after Walker helped me. I popped ya here on the couch, and ya grabbed me, holdin’ me captive before I could escape” Sy tries to joke with me but I feel sick. He must sense something is off because he suddenly looks confused.
“What’s wrong, bub? You alright?”
I squeeze my eyes shut tight. Fuck. There’s no other way to say it.
“No I’m not alright, I’m sorry Jax, I really am.”
“What do ya mean? Why do ya keep apologizin’?” He looks so lost, so confused.
There’s nervous tension in the air. I don't want to say it but I have to. My heart is beating so fast and my chest feels tight, I feel sweat trickling down my back.
“Jax, I’m taking a year break...”, my voice is starting to shake, I can barely look at him. “From my marriage. I’m-I’m married”
The change in Sy is immediate. His eyebrows are furrowed, his lips set in a massive frown, and his shoulders are tense.
“Are ya frickin’ kiddin’ right now?” He growls out.
I flinch. What was I expecting? Well, to be fair it’s not like I planned this shit. Shit just happened.
He gets up. And starts making his way out.
“Jax...” I start calling out to him
“Naw, I’m out” he snaps “all y’all women are the goddamn same”, he laughs shaking his head, but there’s no humour behind it.
Before I can fully explain he’s left; I’m too scared to go after him. Scared of what else he would say. The silence following his departure is deafening.
Sy POV
“I’m married”, it plays over and over again in my head like a broken record the entire drive home.
Well ain’t that a fuckin’ daisy. The first woman in years to have finally caught more than just my eye, and she’s goddamn fuckin’ married.
Gran had been dotin’ over this girl over the phone like there’s no tomorrow. I ain’t gon’ lie; I didn’t put too much thought or weight into her words, but that all changed once I had finally got to meet and spend some time with her.
She was everything Gran had said. Intelligent, funny, caring, kind, genuine, and beautiful. The fact she reminds Gran and Poppa of Momma is somethin’. My chest tightens up thinkin’ about her. My beautiful Mama.
I finally get home after mullin’ over her the entire way. My grandparents can tell somethin’ is up as I walk to my room and start packin’ my shit.
“Hey honey, you were gone for a bit. Everythin alright?”, Gran asks as she stands by my doorway.
“Fine”, I grunt in response. I don’t know what to say.
“How’s Everly? Did y’all say goodbye to each other okay?” Gran presses on as Poppa comes and joins us.
“Oh, you don’t gotta worry about her no more”, I scoff real loud. I can’t even contain how I’m feelin’; I can usually poker face myself outta most scenarios but with anythin’ to do with Everly I can’t seem to.
“What do ya mean?” Poppa mutters out. Him and gran both lookin’ confused.
“She’s married”, I spit out, “she’s on a break at the moment; that’s why she’s here”, I don’t even mean to; but the words just come rushin’ out like verbal diarrhea
I can sense them; feel their surprise and their reaction. Though what comes outta their mouths is somethin’ I wasn’t prepared for.
“So? That don’t mean shit, son. If she’s here she’s obviously here for a reason”, mumbles Pop.
“Y’all must’ve met for a reason, dear. Why she move to the other side of the world, but winds up here. Winds up takin’ care of your granddaddy”, Gran tries to make sense of the situation
“Oh Gran, please don’t say this is “fate” or some shit. Okay?”
“Don’t be givin’ your gran attitude, boy”, Pop growls out.
“I ain’t. I’m just sayin’ this ain’t no fate. This ain’t no soulmate horseshit, okay? No “God’s plan”, I counter back. Wondering what they’d say to this.
“Sweetheart, marriage isn’t the be all or end all of a relationship. I see somethin’ between ya’ll; I do. Somethin’ I ain’t ever seen you have with anyone else. And a piece of paper ain’t gotta stop that. What is meant to be will be,” My gran is so sure of herself and whatever this “thing” is between Everly and I. Poppa even nods along with what she’s saying. They’re being ridiculous; delusional at this point. She and I barely know each other.
“Okay whatever you say, Gran. Let’s get goin’ or I’m gon’ be late”, I squeeze past them with my bag ready to get outta here. Ready to forget about Everly.

Everly POV
Jeb and I have made our way into the library with Sy and Edith not far behind us. Surprisingly Jeb is into sci fi books; I’d just assume he’d be into war and/or murder mysteries. We were discussing the sci-fi classics when I find out that he found Dune an absolute bore.
“Really!? I thought you’d be a fan!”, I exclaim in pure astonishment
“Naw darlin, just ‘cause it’s a classic don’t mean it’s any good”, he points out.
“I’m guessing you’re not gonna bother with the movie that’s just come out?”
“Not unless you want me to die”, he jokes
“Oh my god, don’t say that!”, I lightly smack the arm I have linked with Jeb; mortified he’d be joking about something like that. Can’t say he doesn’t have a sense of humour, but jeez! He definitely isn’t no spring chicken anymore.
Well that decides it; I’m gonna scratch that off my “to read” list. Life is too short for boring books AND movies.
Sy and Edith have finally made their way to us. Sy’s massive arms book free. His grandparents go off to roam and find what they want; Sy comes and joins me.
“Hey, bub. Know what you’re after?”, he’s got the biggest smile, liviest eyes, but also there’s a newfound warmth to them. I have no idea what he and Edith were mumbling about but it looked intense when I had looked back at them. There was a look of deep concentration on his face, as well as Ediths. I’m curious but it also isn’t any of my business. I’m dying to be a sticky beak, but I don’t have enough balls to ask Sy directly.
“Hmmmm, I’m not sure to be honest”, I look up at him and he’s staring at me. Just staring. I watch his eyes just peruse my face. Examining every single and little thing he can, he’s not being subtle, and he’s definitely taking his damn time about it, too. The intensity of it gets to me and I have to look away. I’m baffled; utterly confused. Not only by the way he’s staring at me but why he’s come to join me. I thought he’d be off doing his own thing. I had no inkling he’d want to spend time with me, especially at the library no less. Most people find the library boring.
“Well, watcha in the mood for: romance? Non-fiction? Fantasy? Contemporary? Horror? Post-apocalyptic?”, he lists all these genres, and I’m happy he knows so many. He doesn’t seem like your stereotypical army beefcake.
“Wow, sounds like you’re a reader yourself”, I grin big at him.
“Haha I could say the same thing for ya especially after last night. First the club and then the library the day after, say what girl”, there’s a smirk painted smugly on his bloody face. I take a good look at him. He’s in a white shirt today and blue jeans. Worn brown boots on his feet. He seems to look bloody good in anything he wears. I shake my head; I can’t get distracted by this guy.
“Well what can I say; what you see is definitely not what you get”
“It’s been a pleasure finding that out”
He’s got a look in his eye. This look on his face.
“You’re more than welcome”, the smart arse in me couldn’t resist. I smile before I turn away; deciding to make my way to the adult fantasy section. If I don’t get my ass into gear I can tell we could just stand there and do nothing but chat all day.
Sy stays with me the entire time. Recommending books here and there. The books I pick he ends up stealing off me; adamant he’d be more than happy to carry them for me. I tell him I have arms that work perfectly fine, but he won’t let up. Stubborn as fuck. Am I surprised? No. I guess this is what they meant by southern hospitality. We go past the philosophy section and I see Sy eyeing some books.
“Philosophy?”, I ask him, an eyebrow raised.
“Yeah, I got into it when I turned 17/18. Right when I joined the army”, he glanced at me, sucking his bottom lip into his mouth.
“15 or 16 for me. Kant, Plato, Socrates, Descartes”, I list off the ones I can remember. It’s been a while since I’ve dabbled in philosophy.
“I think therefore I am”, he quotes.
We stay there for the rest of the time; and end up sitting on the floor side by side, right against each other, just flicking through Beyond Good and Evil by Nietzche. Debating, discussing. We don’t realise how long we’d been there until Jeb and Edith finally find us. Apparently it’s been nearly two hours. They’re starving and are keen to get a feed.
I’m ready to go home but Edith is insistent I go and eat at their usual diner with them. I don’t even know how it’s happening but I’m pretty much getting suckered into spending the rest of the day with them. I don’t want to be rude so I join them but I know deep down I shouldn’t. It’s not appropriate spending this much time with patients, especially outside of work. Looking out for them after a dental procedure is different from going out socialising with them.
Next thing I know, I'm sitting beside Sy in the booth. Cramped, pushed right up against him as his large frame takes up most of the bench. He runs so hot I can feel the heat emanating from his body.
We have the menu open in front of us.
“See anythin’ you like, bub?” He asked me. He’s helping me choose something by suggesting meals.
“Hmmmm, I’ll probably just get pancakes”
“Yeah? That sounds good. Got a bit of a sweet tooth, huh Sugar? Remind me what you do for work again..?” He’s grinning, teasing me.
“Oh hush, I take real good care of my teeth! I brush AND floss every night no matter what time I get home or how tired I am”
“Pfft, no one is that dedicated”
“You might not be but I am”
He pokes his tongue out at me and I do it right back.
“Now children, behave yourselves or none of y’all will be eatin”, Jeb scolds us; joining in on our silliness.
We all laugh, enjoying everyone’s company. The waitress comes and takes our order. Sy and I are debating which is better: waffles or pancakes.
I’m obviously pro pancakes and he’s for waffles.
“That’s why waffles are superior; their crispy-ness is where it’s at”
“Nah, they’re so dry! Pancakes are fluffy and moist. That makes them the winner”
At this point Edith and Jeb just let us bicker, laughing at us mostly. I swear I see them from the corner of my eye look at each other a few times; this weird look in their eyes, smiles on their faces. It’s like they know something we don’t.
“Now Evie, tell us why you moved here. And where are ya from?” Edith says
We’re munching on our food now. Both the men ordered big American breakfasts plus waffles for Sy, and Edith an omelette.
Sy looks at me, eating some bacon, “Yeah where the heck are you from? I still can’t figure out your weird accent”
“My accent isn’t that weird” I counter back, trying to get some chocolate ice cream on my pancake.
“Yes it is”, the entire Syverson says at the same time.
I cringe. Gosh, is my accent that bad?
“Well for your information; my accent is a culmination of places that I’ve lived in”, I tell them enjoying my food. It’s been a while since I’ve had some good pancakes.
I look up to see Sy’s eyebrows raised; a look of curiosity spreading across his face as he stuffs his mouth with waffles.
“Well don’t leave us in suspense, dear girl”, Jeb encourages me along.
“Can you guys guess?”, I grin, wanting to see if anyone can get it right
“Oh hell naw, sweet pea! Just tell us, I know for a fact I’m gon’ get this dead wrong”, Sy mumbles over this food.
“Oh c’mon, Captain! Thought you’d be up for a challenge”, I tease him trying to goad him but he isn’t falling for it.
“I ain’t got the patience; it’s been buggin’ me since I met ya” he confesses.
I’m puzzled. Does that mean he’s been thinking about me?
“Born in the Philippines, raised in New Zealand, lived in Canada for the shortest time, and lo and behold, this is the end product”, I tell them.
There’s a simultaneous “wow, and ooo” from the Syversons. I’m guessing they don’t know what to make of that or maybe they’re impressed? Who knows.
“And what got ya over here?” Jeb asks.
“Hmmm I’d been living in Australia for a while, wanted a break, a change of scenery”, I tell them most of the truth, I mean I’m not lying I am here for a break but what kind of break they don’t need to know.
I look over to Sy beside me. He’s nodding acknowledging what I’ve said but not saying anything. His expression is contemplative.
We stay longer chatting more, all of us making our way through our meals.
I’m finishing up my pancakes when Sy starts laughing at me.
“What? Why you cackling like a hyena for?” I ask him, confused as to how I’ve managed to garner this kind of reaction out of him.
“You’re a mess, can’t take ya anywhere”, he grins as he swipes his thumb on the corners of my mouth, wiping off chocolate ice cream, he sticks his thumb in his mouth licking it off, I can’t help but stare. “Here, I can’t get all of it”, he puts his thumb under my chin and turns my head towards him, a napkin in his hand as he cleans me up, a big smile on his face.
“Thanks Jax, always such a gentleman,” I grin back at him
“My pleasure, bub. And only for you”, he winks at me as he keeps his thumb under my chin for a second longer. I look into his eyes, and I swear it looks like he wants to kiss me. He licks his lips, his eyes flicking between mine and my lips, and he slowly starts leaning towards me..
Until there’s a loud crash from the kitchen as we hear something break, ruining the moment.
I jump at the loud noise, Sy clears his throat, and let’s go of my chin.
“Alright, let’s get movin’”
I look up to see Edith and Jeb watching us with the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen on their faces.
Sy POV
I take my grandparents home first, today’s activities zappin’ them of their energy. They wanted to rest before they took me to base.
Everly didn’t wanna wait in the truck; helping gran out and into the house. She also wanted to see Turbo.
“Evie honey, why don’t ya come stay and see Jax off? Jeb and I can take ya home after” Gran suggests
“Oh the drive will be far too long for you guys and it’ll be late into the evening. Plus Jax’s flight is pretty late. I have a 7am start tomorrow” Everly’s biting her lip, a frown on her face.
I ain’t gonna lie I’m bummed but she had a point. My grandparents are getting quite old and I don’t want them driving out that late and that far. I also don’t want Everly to have to Uber home. Plus she’s exhausted and needs rest herself especially if she has an early start tomorrow.
“Alright I better be takin’ Everly home now”, I say.
“Okay sweet girl, don’t be a stranger” gran gives her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
Poppa gives her a big ol’ bear hug making Everly laugh, “you come on back and we get ya better at drivin’ a stick shift, huh?”
“It’s a date” she winks at Poppa making him smile big, “Alright you two, take care, and see you soon” she smiles and makes her way to me.
I offer her my arm and she grabs it with her small hand.
We walk on over to the truck to the passenger side first, I open the door and help her get in. Her tiny 5ft self would need to leap in otherwise. It’s a miracle she managed to drive this massive thing here.
I go on round to my side, and jump in. Put my seat belt on and start the engine. The truck roaring to life, and I start reversing outta the long driveway.
We’re on the road to her place now, I got her to put her address in the GPS. An hour drive or so.
I’ve got my left hand on the steering wheel, my right on the gear stick as I glance over at Everly.
She’s looking out the window, even looking more tired but there’s a smile on her face and she’s resting her hands on her lap.
“My grandparents adore ya, ya know?” I tell her
She looks on over to me her eyes bright, “I like them too, very much”
We talk here and there during the drive but it ain’t forced small talk, and when we ain’t talking we’re quiet but it ain’t bad. I don’t gotta put music on to fill an awkward silence ‘cause there ain’t none.
Sometime during the drive I didn't even realize, but I reached over to Everly and grabbed her hand. Holding it mine; enjoying the weight and feel of it. It felt right. I hadn’t realized till we made it to hers on the other side of town that she’s fast asleep. I don’t know why the image of her with her head to the side sleeping makes me warm inside.
I kill the engine, pick her hand up from my thigh, givin it a quick kiss before I gently place it on her lap, and get outta the truck. I go to the back and grab her bag with her books from the library and then I go over on her side.
I unbuckle her seat belt and pick her up as gently and quietly as I can, not wanting to wake her. I snicker and shake my head in disbelief, she’s light as fuck; sweet baby Jesus I bench heavier weights than her. I slowly close the door and lock the truck. Trying to be careful and not jostle her around too much.
I start going around the truck when I see someone come out the front door and I can’t believe who it is.
It’s August Walker. CIA agent. I’ve worked with him a few times being a special forces captain on select missions. Small dang world or what?
“Well I’ll be damned, Walker” I say to him
“What do you think you’re doing here, Captain Syverson?” he says right on back.
We both break out in grins, the fake bravado falling away.
He gives me a slap on the back.
“Clearly you know Everly” he motions with his head to her in my arms. She’s got her head curled up against my chest.
“Yes I do..she lives here..?” I ask, confused.
Walker laughs, “She does at the back in the renovated pool house. She’s my fiancé’s, Alicia’s, good friend. I’ll take you through”
I follow him through his extravagant house, big and luxurious.
We get to the pool house, and it’s a decent size.
“..key?” I ask him.
He comes around to my other side where Everly’s bag hangs. There’s a front pocket where her key is, but it ain’t no traditional key. It’s some fancy keycard that Walker waves over some high tech lookin’ shit. We hear the lock slide open and he puts the keycard back in her bag.
“Good to see you again” he says
“You too, man”
“Now you look after her”
“I sure will”, I tell him. He smiles and turns around, walking past the pool, and back into the main house.
I go in, closing the door with my boot, and walk on through to the lounge, and take her to the L shaped couch nearby. I lay her down on the chaise just long enough to put her bag down when she reaches for me, pulling me down, and snuggles against me. A small sigh escapin her lips. I’m taken aback; not expecting this. I really should go. I need to finish packing my shit, but I don’t wanna.
…Fuck it; I ain’t goin’ until I really have to.
I carefully take my phone outta my front pocket, set an alarm, and put it back.
I look down at her, she’s snuggled right against me; her breathing deep and even. I carefully take her glasses off, and put them on the coffee table. I tuck her back against me, her small frame fitting perfectly against mine. I sweep her baby hairs off her forehead and press my lips against it, smiling to myself.
I lay my head on top of hers, falling asleep myself.

Awwww ❤️ I love his relationship with grandparents. I can feel the southern warmth coming through the words like a blanket wrapping around me and making me a bit homesick for my own grandparents. Wonder if he’ll actually get her number this time lol

Sy POV
I watch the white SUV disappear, and make my way back. Fuck, with everythin’ that ended up goin’ down I forgot to ask for Everly’s number again. I sigh, frustrated. Well can’t do anythin’ about it now, though I know it’s gon’ bug me for the rest of the night. I don’t know when I’ll see her next. If I’ll ever see her again; you never know when it’s gon’ be your last mission in the military.
I get back in the club when Pepps, drunk as skunk, corners me.
“Dayumm! You struck out too huh!? I thought you was the lucky one ‘cause I saw y’all walk out together, but muthafucka you back! She didn’t want yo’ grumpy ass in the end!” He’s loud as fuck and slurrin’ all his goddamn words. I’m surprised he’s still vertical.
“Ah, shut your pie hole. Her girl’s and her had to go hospital. One of them has alcohol poisonin’, and if you keep carryin’ on the way ya are you’re gonna be joinin’ them”, I snap at him.
At this point Pepps is too far gone, I doubt he heard any of that. He just laughs and gets distracted by some girls passin’ us, “Eyyyy sweet thang, what’s yo’ name!?” And he’s off creepin’ as usual.
I go to the bar to order another glass of whiskey when BJ comes up to me.
“Hey, that was the chick Pepps blew it with, didn’t know she was your type Cap”, BJ’s grinnin’ like a goddamn idiot.
“I’d met her before, Everly’s the one who took my grandparents home from the dentist”, I tell ‘im as I pay for my drink.
“Oh for real? Well dang, she cute; pretty name too. She ain’t look nothin’ like dem ladies you normally go home with”
I grunt in response, takin’ a swig of my drink. He’s right. I usually go home with girls like that blonde from earlier tonight. Tall, light hair, light eyes, and voluptuous. But I don’t know, there’s somethin’ about Everly.
I try enjoy the rest of the night, a few ladies even wantin’ me to go home with them but for once I just wasn’t feelin’ it, my heart ain’t in it tonight nor my dick.
After a while I give up especially when the buzz of the alcohol dies. None of the boys wanna call it a night, sayin’ they’ll just get an Uber so I head back home by myself. So many thoughts runnin’ through my head as I drive back in the truck. My phone vibrates and a name that I’ve seen pop-up plenty of times appears, but like I’ve said I ain’t in the mood tonight especially not for her so I ignore the call. I get inside, and try be quiet as my grandparents are sleepin’. I brush my teeth real quick, and pass out on my bed. Visions of black gray hair and warm chocolate eyes are the last thing I remember.
Sy POV
It’s Saturday. I ain’t feelin’ bad; I didn’t drink much, and I’m used to havin’ little to no sleep.
We get outta church after attendin’ the 9am mass. My grandparents usually go on a Sunday but Grand Momma wanted us to go together before I’m deployed tonight. We continue on with their routine by headin’ to the library. I try find a spot close to the entrance so my grandparents don’t gotta walk far; couldn’t find shit so we had a bit of a way to walk. I grab the pile of books from the back as Poppa helps gran outta the truck.
I’m carryin’ the books walkin’ ahead as I see none other than the person who occupied my thoughts and seeped into dreams last night.
Well I’ll be damned; she’s on her way to the library as well.
She’s wearin’ a long pale pink summer dress with a high collar beige cardigan with nude ballet flats, her hair in a messy bun.
“Everly!” I holler. I must’ve scared her ‘cause she looks like she about to drop her books. She turns around, her glasses slidin’ down her nose.
“Jax!” She looks surprised to see me.
I catch up to her. This is the first time she’s been beside me in somethin’ other than heels, and godfreakin’damn she is tiny. She just comes up to my shoulder… just.
“hey darlin’, how ya doin?”, I greet her with a big smile.
“Good morning, Sy”, she looks up at me, hoisting the books up as she pushes her glasses back up her nose.
I look down at her grinning; happy to see her right before I leave. But then I notice her eyes, there’s prominent dark circles under them. Ones that weren’t there the last two times I saw her. Worry creeping into my stomach. She’s smilin’ back at me, despite how tired her eyes are. Tired she might be, she’s looking as pretty as she did last night. Not a lick of makeup on but sometimes makeup is just the cherry on top. She’s the whole goddamn cupcake.
“Hey, you alright? Have you rested at all after last night? C’mon, gimme those books I’ll carry them for ya” I grab the books off her, adding them to the pile I’m already carrying; not giving her a chance to say no.
“Yeah I’m okay, thanks for asking. And thanks for carrying my books. I’ve slept a little, maybe three and a half hours or so..?”
I frown a bit, “That ain’t enough, bub”, the term of endearment just slipping out, “how long were you in the hospital for? Is your friend okay?”
“Shit, I didn’t take note”, she doesn’t seem to mind me calling her that. She’s biting her lower lip trying remember for how long. I don’t even notice my eyes are glued to them until she starts talking again, “A while to be honest. Yeah she’s alright.. this isn’t the first time it’s happened. What about you? Did you stay at the club for much longer?”
“Oh, that explains your other friend’s reaction. Naw, it got pretty borin’ after ya left. I went home not long after”, she smiles at that but before she can answer my grandparents finally make it to us.
“Oh, Ms. Everly! What a nice surprise bumpin’ into you like this”, my gran says. My Poppa beside her smiling.
“Good morning Mr. and Mrs. Syverson”, my gran goes and gives her a hug, my Poppa does too.
“Now young lady, you don’t gotta be callin’ us somethin’ so formal” he tells her as he pats her hand, “Edith and Jeb is just fine”
“Then you both can stop calling me Ms. Everly!” She counters back, we all laugh at that, “Everly or Evie is fine” she winks at them.
“Oh you’re a funny one” Poppa says chuckling, “c’mon missy, let’s go find us some books. And tell me, watcha been reading” he gently grabs her hand and places it on his arm, linking them together. I smile. I ain’t ever seen my Poppa this warm to someone outside the family.
Gran and I let them walk in front, gran grabbing my arm to link hers through mine.
“You know, Jax. Little Evie here reminds me a lot of your beautiful mama” my gran starts.
I swallow before I look at her, “Oh, really?” I answer back quietly. We don’t really mention my parents that much.
“Oh yeah. A sweet, kind, caring thing just like her. Both have a wittiness about them, but Evie just a touch more. Both firecrackers” gran smiles at that; remembering her fondly, “that’s why your daddy fell right in love with her, same with your Poppa and I. When your daddy brought Esme home for us to meet for the first time, woo. Good lord we ain’t ever had such a good time. We could see that Esme adored Jacob to bits. We were absolutely smitten with her.” I smile at that myself, a warmth spreading through my chest.
“When Evie came back the next day to check on your grandfather, I didn’t tell ya, but she stayed a while” gran confesses
“She did..?”
“She sure did. Turbo met her and instantly fell in love with her. That dog wouldn’t leave her alone, poor girl, he was always jumping on her. And your granddaddy absolutely loved her company. They went out for a long walk with Turbo together. Just chattin’. Surprised the good heavens outta me, I haven’t seen your granddaddy that fond of someone since your mama. He even offered to teach her how to drive a stick better” gran laughed at that. Her and Poppa talking about Everly or being around her makes them light up. I couldn’t figure out why until now.
“Why didn’t y’all tell me this earlier?” I ask.
Gran shrugs, “I don’t know to be honest with ya, honey. I guess we were both a bit shocked to meet someone who reminded us so much of your mother”, we’re walking slowly immersed in our conversation, “it’d been a while since we saw Evie, it felt like a dream ya know? But then seeing her at the clinic and her being there with us that entire time, looking after me, even assisting for me even though she was meant to be having her lunch, solidified that it was real.”
I’m thinking deep now ‘cause it ain’t only gran and Poppa getting fond of this girl, and it’s been a long time since I’ve felt somethin’ even remotely close to this..

Everly POV
It felt good, it felt so fucking good to be free. To not have to worry about anyone else other than myself. To have no other responsibilities or obligations other than TO myself.
I haven’t been this free for a longggg time.
It felt strange. Foreign. Unknown. Good, but also scary.
I’ve just worked a 12-hour shift, but instead of doing what I used to do, I'm out with my girl’s living it up.
7am-7pm: Work with only a half an hour break. I should be exhausted, and I am. But that’s what energy drinks are for.
I go home, get ready, late as dinner, and then out into the clubs. Everyone’s already a little buzzed having had two or three drinks at the restaurant. Vodka Redbull my poison of choice. Who said energy drinks couldn’t be more fun?
I can hear Lea’s voice in my head: “Have fun but take care and be careful, sis!”
She didn’t come with. She went home to be with her man, Eric, and her adorable son, Isaac. She’s like the mother hen of the group. I guess her partying days are behind her. I’m late to mine.
It must be our lucky night because we barely had to wait in the queue for long; we’re ushered into the club by the bouncers. Second club of the night and we’re hoping this one was a good one. We weren’t vibing with the music of the other place. .
The place is packed. The music booming hard through the speakers. Everyone seems to be having a good time.
Shayla has sashayed her fine self straight to the dance floor dragging me along with her; Lydia straight to the bar. Casey right behind us pushing Lauren ahead.
“You’re gonna have a damn good time and forget about work for once in your life!” I hear Casey yell.
Lauren had a tough day with difficult procedures and challenging patients. I wouldn’t know the extent.. I was too bloody busy running between general, orthodontics, and periodontics. I’m scared to see how many steps I’ve taken today, and the night’s not even over yet.
I feel Shayla dance closer to me smiling like there’s a little devil on her shoulder.
“So is tonight the night? You finally gon’ take someone home?”, She winks at me trying to be slick.
Every time we’re out she tries to set me up with every Tom, Dick, and Harry that she can get her hands on.
I laugh and roll my eyes at her. I’m gonna gap before she can sucker me into anything. I point to the bar letting them know I want a drink, and to also find Lydia.
I push myself through all the bodies shouting a never ending chorus of “excuse me, pardon me” trying hard to get through all these gigantors when I finally make it to one of the ends of the really long bar.
“Heyyy, little one!” Lydia slurs, and grabs me for a hug. She’s had a few.
The rest of the girls follow behind me and we all order two rounds of wet pussy shots; we down them quickly when we hear someone come and approach us.
“Wassup ladies”, his voice is cocksure and stupid loud.
He comes on right over to me, and puts his arm around me.
“Yo, shorty. What they call ya, huh?”, the arrogance of this boy is just oozing out of him.
I grab his arm, shaking my head, dropping it fast beside him.
“First of all I ain’t your “shorty”, bro. Second of all, don’t be putting your hands on me”
“Ooo sorry, mah bayd. Lemme buy ya a drink to apologize'', he winks thinking he’s real cute.
“How ‘bout if you guess my age right you can have my number otherwise you can piss right off”, I grin big; knowing he won’t be able to succeed. No one has been able to get this shit right. This is the surefire way to get rid of him.
“Damnnnn girl, you feisty lil thang!“
I roll my eyes at him, just waiting for him to answer.
The sudden confidence is gone but he answers nonetheless
“21”
The girl’s and I laugh.
“Later, bo!”, we wave his ass goodbye. This always gets rid of unwanted attention quick.
Next thing you know our jam comes on. The timing couldn’t have been any more perfect. Shayla starts hollering, and I can’t help but join in too.
It’s time to get our asses back on the dance floor. And that’s exactly what we do.
We’re all pushed up together, rapping along with the song, dancing, having a damn good time.
Our fave part comes on and I can’t help but slide on over to Lauren, putting her hands on my hips as I back it up on her. I can hear her laugh and sway along with me, cracking up even louder as I drop it wayyy down, and start twerking on her. The other girls are laughing, egging us on as she gets into it. I get back up laughing and turn around to give Lauren a hug.
“And there you have the Evie special; just for you tonight”, I shout over the music into her ear.
“Awww, you lil shit. You always know how to cheer me up”. She hugs me back tight, a grin on her face as we pull away.
We dance a bit longer when I suddenly don’t feel too good. The sleep deprivation is finally catching up with me. The air is thick and heavy, and with barely any water in me and all this alcohol I need fresh air.
I tell Lauren I’m gonna step out for a bit and I push through the bodies to make my way through the back. Opening the door as I make my way outside and step into the cold night air.
The fresh air was just what I was after; it was getting hot in there, and I needed a breather. I focus on the air filling my lungs when I let out a small breath. I hear the door slam shut loudly, but I pay it no mind.
“Looks like ya need this”, I hear a familiar voice over the music and bass from inside the club.
I crack an eye open and look to my right. Surprised to see who it is.
“…Jax?” A small smile tugs on my lips.
He’s standing there in a black skin tight v-neck shirt his dog tags peeking under, black jeans that fit him in all the right places, brown leather belt, and black leather boots. This man loves the colour black. I catch myself staring at him longer than I should. He not only looks good in uniform but also out of it, too.
“Yes, ma’am. But didn’t I tell ya to call me Sy?” He grins as he holds out a bottle of cold water to me.
“Sorry, Captain”, I smirk as I take the water from him, our fingers touching briefly.
I open it and scull it; not realising how thirsty I am. I can feel his eyes on me as I wipe away a bit of water that escapes and drips down from the corner of my lips.
“Thanks for this” I say holding up the water.
I see his eyes flicker from the water bottle to my mouth. He quickly clears his throat.
“Pleasure’s mine.. mind if I come join ya?” He asks me, an inquisitive look on his face.
“Not at all” I smile at him and motion to the wall beside me.
He sauntered over to me, leaning against the wall before crossing his arms, the action highlighting how big his biceps are.
“Looks like you were havin’ a grand ol’ time in there” he says with a smirk.
I look up at him, eyebrow raised “oh, really now? What makes you say that, huh?” I’m curious now.
He laughs, “those dance moves looked interestin’” his eyes mischievous.
“Oh, don’t be telling your grandparents that!” My eyes wide.
“Why not?”, Mofo has a shit eating grin on his face.
“Because I have a reputation to uphold”
“Oh, do ya now?” He’s teasing me now; a glint in his eye.
“I sure do. Wait… you were watching me, eh? Now tell me Captain, for how long?”
“From the moment one of my boys got shut down” he threw his head back laughing, his whole body shaking, his eyes crinkled in the corners.
“From then, eh? You know that cocky son of a bitch!?” I’m laughing too, surprised.
“Yes, ma’am. He’s one of the younger ones in my squad. A frickin’ tactical genius which is probably why he’s so goddamn cocky”
“That makes sense”, I nod, “hold up…what are you doing here? This doesn’t look like a place you’d hang out in”
“The boys from the squad and I are havin’ our last hurrah before we’re deployed again, we somehow ended up here” Sy forces a small smile but it’s tight and doesn’t reach his eyes .
The atmosphere shifts; no longer light and playful.
“Oh.. when do you leave?”, I ask him softly.
“Tomorrow night”, Sy turns away from me, he looks straight ahead of him, staring at the road in front of us, his eyes pensive.
“For how long?”
“At the moment six months, but ya never know. Could be extended”, he’s still looking ahead; nodding slightly.
“Better make the most of your night then, eh? Don’t waste what little time you have left with me! Go back in there and have some fun”, I’m smiling as I motion my head towards the club and nudge him with my shoulder trying to lighten the mood, “go get fucked up with your boys and get some sugar” I wink at him grinning.
He laughs, “Naw someone’s gotta look out for these imbeciles plus who said I ain’t havin’ fun out here with you”, he nudges me back with his shoulder, smiling.
“Oh yeah, discussing my dodgy dance moves eh?”
“‘Ute, dodgy, eh’ what in tarnations is this kind of vocabulary?” Sy smirks at me “oh, good lord you ain’t no British Canadian are ya!?”
I laugh, “no but who the hell says “tarnations” in this day and age, huh?” I tease him right back “Mr. Syverson isn’t really your granddad, eh? He’s your brother isn’t he, you old fart?”
“Now who in the hell are you callin’ an old fart, huh? Just ‘cause you be one of dem young folk in their 20’s, goddamn smartass delinquent with that blasphemous dancin’”, he’s laying the southern accent on thick now, taking the piss which just makes me laugh especially as he frowns looking just like his grandfather.
“Hey I’m young but I ain’t that young, old man”
“Do I get the same deal as Pepps? If I guess right, you’ll gimme your number?” He asks me, wiggling his eyebrows, making me laugh more.
“I don’t know”, I shrug, “you’re probably too old for me, sir”
“Oh c’mon now, I ain’t that old” he’s smiling big, his eyes shining as he grins at me.
He looks different when he’s smiling and laughing like this; younger, happier. I can’t help but smile and laugh back. His good mood is infectious.
I can’t be thinking like this though. Can’t be getting attracted to someone; someone like him. This definitely isn’t what I’m here for. I didn't move all this way for this.
Before I can respond and tell him the truth the door opens and one of my girl’s comes over. It’s Shayla with a worried look etched on her beautiful ebony face
“There you are, LO. I’ve been looking all over for you. We gotta get goin, baby girl. Lydia’s been puking non-stop. We think it’s alcohol poisoning. AGAIN”, she shakes her head, rolling her eyes. This is why the girls weren’t big fans of her.
“Fuck, I hope she’s okay. Sorry, Sy. I better get going” I push myself off the wall. I turn to Sy looking him in the eyes. He looks worried himself now, too.
“No need to apologize, darlin’” his eyebrows are furrowed, “y’all need help? I can take y’all over to the hospital”
“Naw, Lydia’s mom is here. We’re about to head on over there but thanks” Shayla says.
“Alright, well I’ll walk y’all ladies to the car”, Sy says as he follows beside me, his large hand on the small of my back.
We make our way through the club as quickly as we can despite the difficulty with how busy it is. Sy doesn’t leave my side the entire time, pushing through the crowds for me with his gigantic frame, keeping me safe from being trampled on, tucking me securely against his side.
We make it outside; the crisp cool air waking us up. Casey is standing there waiting for us to take us to the car. A grimace on her face.
We walk just a little up the street when I see Lydia’s mum’s large seven seater Audi Q7. Lydia’s not looking great sitting in the passenger seat, resting her head against the glass window, holding a bag to her face.
The girls start piling in, and I turn to my side to say bye to Sy.
“Thanks for offering to take us to the hospital; that’s real kind of you,” I look up at him with a small smile, craning my neck up even with heeled boots on, “thanks for the water again” it’s windy and my hair flies into my face, getting stuck on my lips, stupid lip gloss.
Sy helps me push my hair out of my face as he pulls me in for a hug.
“It’s no problem at all. I’m sorry about your friend; I had a good time chattin’ wit’ ya though,” his voice is muffled by my hair as he whispers in my ear.
“I did, too”, I’m surprised but I hug him back. I’m almost balancing on the tips of my boots, he’s hunched over engulfing me in a warm, tight, hug with his massive body.
I’m about to let go but he holds on a little longer, his face buried in my hair.
Lydia’s mum gets impatient and puts the window down, “Evie sweetie, we gotta get goin” she says, her voice urgent.
As Sy and I separate he tucks my hair behind my ear. It’s like he’s taking every chance he can get to touch me and draw out this goodbye as long as possible.
“Alright you take care now, Everly. I hope your friend will be alright” his smile is tight.
I give him a quick smile as I clamber into the SUV, and thank him for the hundredth time as Lydia’s mum drives away. I watch him become a tiny speck on the sidewalk as we make our way to the hospital.

Sy POV
I’d been home for a bit; relieved to finally have some type of rest. Happy to be with my grandparents again, the joy of cookin’ for them somethin’ I absolutely love to do. I head into town needin’ to grab a few things. I park my truck at the grocery store countin’ things off my head in terms of what I need to get for dinner. I kill the engine about to hop on out when I see a certain someone leavin’ the store.
I see Everly in navy blue scrubs, a black long sleeve top, her long black gray hair tied up in a messy bun. She’s carryin’ a bunch of groceries walkin’ alongside Georgia Anderson who is hobblin’ along in a cast and crutches. I’d heard from gran that Georgia broke her leg after fallin’ down the stairs. I overhear them as they stop by a car near me. Everly loading her groceries for her.
“Oh thank you so much, sweet girl. You’re such an angel helping me out,” Georgia smiles at Everly, “now let me thank you by dropping you off home, sweetie. It’s the least I can do”
“You’re welcome. And it’s okay. You don’t have to” Everly smiles back, politely declining her offer.
“Oh, it ain’t no trouble at all. Plus you don’t live that far from me.” Georgia insists. Not takin’ no for an answer.
“Are you sure?”
“No doubt, missy. Now c’mon and jump in”, Georgia waves her in. Everly helps her into the car first; takin’ her crutches and poppin’ them at the back before climbin’ in the front.
They drive away talkin’ and laughin’. I can’t help but smile to myself. Seems like Everly is the town’s guardian angel.
Sy POV
How the fuck did I end up in an R&B/hip hop club late on a Friday? Who the fuck knows?
One minute the men and I are bar hoppin’ from one dive to another, and the next thing I know I’m in this godforsaken place.
Everyone’s pretty hammered, I ain’t feelin’ too bad. Someone’s gotta keep an eye out for these numbnuts, and I guess ‘cause I’m their captain that goddamn responsibility automatically ended up fallin’ on me.
This ain’t my usual scene and I ain’t really feelin’ it, but with glasses of whiskey to stomach this place who am I to say no?
The boys have let loose, shit talkin’, and tryna get laid before we get deployed again, I’m just here for the ride.
The place is packed, the lights low, the bar a shinin’ neon beacon for anyone and everyone that wants to get fucked up.
The music is loud, bass reverberating through the building as there’s people all over the place; some dancin’ on the dance floor, grindin’ on each other. Some around the bar takin’ shots and drinkin’ their night away. Some just chillin’ with their friends on some leather seats spread around the joint.
The boys make a beeline for the bar, and I ain’t too far behind them.
We’re pushin’ our way through the sweaty bodies when we finally make it.
A round of tequila shots get ordered, and I get myself a Jack on the rocks.
The boys are loud, obnoxiously so but what else would you get with a bunch of single men in their 20’s and 30’s tryna blow off some steam? I’m feelin’ my age nearin’ 40. I’m gettin’ too old for this shit.
I’m pulled outta my thoughts when I hear Pepps.
“Godfuckingdamn, who are those fine as ladies!?” He hollers loud as fuck, a hand on his chest, the other against his mouth.
I roll my eyes. They’ve started huntin’.
I pay no mind just sippin’ on my whiskey when someone approaches me.
“Hey, you” they whisper into my ear.
I turn to see a hot blonde on my right. She’s tall, nearly my height with heels on. She’s got green eyes and her lips are painted red which matches her short, tight, red dress.
I’m about to say somethin’ when I see Pepps in the corner of my eye approach a group of ladies, I’m guessin’ the one he was losin’ his mind over just a second ago.
Somethin’ makes me stop and look; squinting tryna get a better look.
One of them ladies look familiar, she’s got long gray hair when it clicks..
“Sorry ma’am, if you’ll excuse me”, I tell the blonde.
She doesn’t look too impressed, her sultry look quickly turning into a scowl, no longer lookin’ as hot as she did.
“Whatever” she rolls her eyes at me, stompin’ away in them heels.
I ain’t bothered. My curiosity has gotten the better of me.
I make my way to the boys and they’re all laughin’
“What’s that fool doin’ now?” I ask BJ as I take a sip of my drink.
“That muthafucka thinks he has a shot with that girl with the long black gray hair” BJ splutters out, nearly chokin’ on his beer.
I look over and my instinct was right… it’s Everly.
I watch Pepps walk on right over with the swagger of a hundred rappers.
A sly look in his eye and a cocky smirk on his face. I gotta give the kid somethin’, he’s got balls especially puttin’ his arm around her. She grabs his arm, and drops it by his side shakin’ her head. The boys start crackin’ up.
That doesn’t deter Pepps though. He’s talkin’ tryna get an in.
Suddenly Everly smiles, big and bright, and says somethin’. Pepps suddenly not lookin’ as confident. He takes a minute to think before he finally decides to answer. It must’ve been wrong ‘cause the all girl’s laugh and wave him goodbye.
He comes on back over lookin’ confused.
“She don’t want ya, huh?” I say grinnin’.
“She said she’d gimme her number if I guessed her age right” he says.
We laugh. Fool. Good luck guessin’ an Asians correct age. Male or female. No one can tell.
“What’d you guess?” I ask curious.
“21” he says with no hesitation.
“Nah man, I bet you she’s nearly 40” BJ chimes in.
“No fucking way, I bet you late 20’s like 28”, Pat offers up.
They all take turns guessin’. I ain’t even gonna try.
The song changes and I see Everly and her girl’s make their way to the dance floor, clearly a fan of this song. The boys still debating amongst themselves.
“My bitch love Coco! Woo back, baby!” It comes loud through the speakers.
I ain’t seen her since she was at the store in her scrubs two nearly three weeks ago, and by god does she look different outta them.
She’s on the dance floor laughin, rappin’ along with the song, her girl’s and her clearly havin’ a good time.
They’re all dancin’ together, close as fuck. When I see her slide on over in front of one of her friends, grab their hands placin’ them on her hips as she starts backin’ it up, grindin’ against her.
The boys must’ve noticed how quiet I’d been ‘cause they look on over to see her drop it down, shakin’ her ass in time to the lyrics.
“And I got a bad bitch, ass up
Face down (Face down), yeah, she love doggy style (Uh-huh)”
She starts mock twerkin’ and jumps up laughing, all the girls do too as she grabs her friend behind her, giving her a hug.
They continue dancing together, and the boys and I look at each other. Eyes wide.
“Hot damn..” Pepps mutters.
“Dude, you never had a chance with her”, BJ wheezes out, he can’t stop laughin’ over Pepps confidence.
I laugh and shake my head, draining the rest of my drink.
Well, this is certainly a different Everly to the one I’d met at the clinic.
She dances for a bit longer and then goes and whispers something in her friend’s ear, and starts making her way to one of the doors at the back.
The boys have moved onto Jägerbombs as I go and buy a bottle of water, and start to make my way towards Everly’s direction.
Pepps already scopin’ the place out for his next victim.
I make it outside, the door closing with a loud clang when I see her to my left. She’s leaning against the brick wall, legs semi bent, head turned up towards the night sky with her eyes closed.
I don’t head over straight away; I’m too busy admirin’ her.
She’s got a full face of makeup on nothing too much, but enough to enhance her looks.
Her long hair is out, she’s wearing a snug ribbed long sleeved dress accentuating her figure with tight suede thigh high boots. Fuck, she looks good, too fuckin’ good.
The thumping of the bass from inside makes the wall shake as she lets out a small breath.
I take a few steps over to her.

When you’re laughing your ass off until you remember you live there
hold on a fucking second. delaware is a state?? i thought it was a river? or is the river more important than the state? why don't i know this? (i should mention i don't like in america, i'm just confused)
there is delaware (state) and delaware (river)
both are equally strange
the state is a tiny little cryptid thing
the rive is a monster that spans new york, pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. also washington crossed it once and that was like kinda a big deal i guess. like crossing the rubicon in rome.
the state tries to me more important with its “im the first state!!!” bs (seriously its even on the fucking license plates) but we all know. its the river.
