I've been thinking about this a little bit since I saw someone else comment on it, and yeah Fred and Freddy are kinda like headmates. Freddy acts a lot like a cocon system, but suppressing his co-host because he's been taught that he's supposed to. Freddy being treated for psychosis ("these pills will help you top seeing the shadow man" or whatever) instead of being told he could be system is also a common experience (many systems are also psychotic and that's also fine, but you're not gonna benefit from suppressing your headmates with pills. That's for hallucinations).

I actually liked when Eddo had multiple shadows because it helped shadow lore get away from being similar to having alters. I know she didn't intend for shadows to be similar, but as someone with headmates it's kind of hard to deny the similarities between our relationships and Fred and Freddy's relationship. They bicker over who gets control of the body and when, they both have different skill sets, they both like different things and have different interests, Fred questions his very existence a lot and is pretty insecure about it, etc.

Makes me kind of want to make an AU where Freddy is a system and the plot follows him trying to be more open and honest about it and coming to accept Fred as a headmate (which is kind of similar to what already happens in fnafhs, just this time I would make it very explicit that Freddy is a system)
