Pro-tip from a strictly unprofessional writer:
Hate what you’ve just written? Or maybe hate is too strong of a word, but you’re just not sure about it?
Step 1. Stop. Close the laptop or notebook and walk away.
Step 2. A. Is it late at night? Go to sleep.
Step 2. B. Is it not late at night but you’re tired? Take a nap.
Step 3. Drink some water.
Step 4. Have something to eat.
Step 5. Do something fun.
Step 6. Return to your writing. You’ll almost definitely like it more than you did before.
Step 7. Keep doing awesome things.
Repeat as needed.

I think sometimes with writing fanfiction it's so easy to forget that it's supposed to be self-indulgent and not a game of statistics.
Of course it's nice to have people like your work, and it feels good to be appreciated for how much effort you put into it. But fanfiction writing is often a thankless job, so write what you would want to read. If people like it, they like it. If people don't, oh well. Write for you and no one else.

honestly? make creative shit just for yourself. and i mean that both literally in the sense that it’s absolutely cool to make something with the intention that only you will ever see it and i mean that personally in the sense that your creative work can be completely self-indulgent to your tastes and preferences

the post about fanfic writers updating despite wild life circumstances is funny and great, but to all the slow writers, the writers who can’t focus when life is happening a lot, or who simply like taking time off from writing: you’re doing amazing, fandom is not an obligation, and there are many people who prefer short fics, or who read slowly and are in no rush for updates.

This is your friendly reminder that the last few years have been hard, and if your writing has taken a toll as a result, that doesn’t make you any less of a writer. Maybe you went on hiatus. Maybe you got burnout. Maybe life gave you shit and other things took priority. It doesn’t matter. Writing is hard, so when life is hard, you might end up slacking in the writing department. And that’s okay. There’s no rule that says you have to write even when life is shitting on you. You’re allowed to take a break, and you can start writing again when you feel ready.

“One man’s cringe is another man’s epic” and “a flawed story is still a thousand times better than a story never told” are two pieces of advice that a lot of people aspiring to be writers really need to take to heart. Stop tearing yourself up over getting every little insignificant thing right.

It’s important to remember that the point of a hobby is to have fun not “get better”
Imagine if someone who reads as a hobby was constantly told they would “get better” or asked “are you improving”
Now stop saying this to artist/fiber artist/dancers/anyone that has any hobby where they make things
Stop putting pressure on our fun enjoyable time by putting standards and expectations on it. If I suck at embroidery oh Fucking well i suck but I like doing it it’s FUN that’s the whole point is having FUN

A very hard truth that you will repeatedly have to come to terms with as a writer over and over again is this:
Your writing is not for everyone, no matter how crazy good you are. Some people won’t like it. Even the people closest to you - friends, family, etc. - might not like it. Even the people who have previously liked your other stories might not like your writing in the future.
This does not make you a bad writer.
This does not mean your story sucks.
It means you haven’t found your audience.
No matter how many times you encounter this, it will never, ever get easier. Imposter Syndrome will be breathing down your neck hard and fast every single time.
Remember, this is your story. No one has to like it. You just have to tell it to share your vision, your dream. To express yourself and find freedom that only writing a story can give you.

The problem with feeling so strongly so suddenly about a fictional oc ship is that if I want more content about it, which I do, I have to *make it myself.* Oh, the humanity.
