do any rich distinguished older women (perhaps an art dealer or architect or public intellectual) need a personal assistant who will not do very much work but will develop a crush on them and be paid handsomely for it

it must suck to do an assassination and have everyone cheering you on and hyping you up cuz you can’t tell anyone you did it. you have to keep that information to yourself.

Sources on Julie d’Aubigny
Julie d’Aubigny can be a frustrating historical personality to research – every way you look there are people enthusing over her, but very few have references or citations, which can be frustrating for anyone with an interest in accurate historical sources. In the interest of primary sources, here are a few that are helpful:
François & Claude Parfaict – Dictionnaire des Theatres de Paris, and Anecdotes Dramatiques
The Parfaict brothers were 18th century theatre historians, and both Dictionnaire and Anecdotes are valuable sources for d’Aubigny’s life. They are some of the most nearly contemporary to the time she lived (c. 1670-1707) of all the sources available.
The scans of Dictionnaire can be found here, where she is only briefly mentioned. (French)
The text of Anecdotes can be found here, where her life is discussed in detail. (French)
A very rough translation from the original French can be found here. (English)
François-Joseph Fétis – Biographie universelle des musiciens et bibliographie générale de la musique
Fétis was a 19th century musicologist, and wrote Biographie between 1833–1844, in eight volumes; d’Aubigny’s life is discussed in the 6th volume under “Maupin, her stage name. Not a contemporary source.
The text can be found here. (French)
Jean-Laurent Le Cerf de La Viéville – Comparaison de la musique italienne et de la musique française
Le Cerf was a 17th-18th century musicologist, who mentions d’Aubigny briefly, again under her stage name “la Maupin” in Comparaison (1705). He mentions that she does better in breeches roles and how she should abandon the “hairdo and fan” for the “lance and helmet”. This is also a contemporary source to her lifetime.
The text can be found here. (French)
Jean-Benjamin De La Borde – Essai sur la musique ancienne et moderne
La Borde was a 18th century composer who wrote extensively on music. Essai was written in 1780. Here, in Vol. 3, La Borde recounts a summary of her life, including a number of her more famous adventures, with details. Not contemporary to her life, but close.
The text can be found here. (French)
The Marquis of Dangeau – Journal
This is a very brief source where the Marquis mentions having been to a performance of Omphale starring d’Aubigny, who he says has “the most beautiful voice in the world”. Also a source contemporary to her life, c.1701.
The text can be found here in Vol. 8 (French)
A lot of these sources are sadly lacking in an English translation that is accessible online, so until I can translate them the original French is all that is available.
