oscar isaac is routinely snubbed by the academy. things they really should have nominated him for but didn’t:
drive (2011 - supporting, plays carey mulligan’s recently out of prison husband, aka, the most compelling part of the damned film)
inside llewyn davis (2013 - lead, plays a floundering folk musician in 60s New York during one horrible week in his life)
a most violent year (2014 - lead, plays a latino business man trying to hold his oil company together in the face of theft, fraud etc.)
ex machina (2015 - supporting, plays a charismatic but terrible genius who invents AI)
like honestly, if michael fassbender or eddie redmayne or even bradley cooper had played any of these parts, they would have most certainly got the nomination.

Man Shoots at Intruders, Turns Out it was a No-Knock Raid. Now He Faces the Death Penalty

On Friday, May 9, 2014, just after 5:30am in Killeen, Texas, Marvin Louis Guy was the target of a no knock raid.
The officers were looking for drugs, yet none were found in the home. There was some questionable paraphernalia, but nothing indicative of drug dealing- or anything damning enough for a reasonable person to feel the need to take an officers life.
Likely alarmed by the men climbing through his windows at 5:30 in the morning, Guy and his wife sought to protect themselves and their property and fired on the intruders - in self defense.
Dinwiddie, along with three other officers were shot while attempting to breach the windows to the home, according to the department’s press release.
Since the shooting occurred during the break in, a reasonable person would assume they had not yet identified themselves as police officers. How on earth is this not self defense?
Prosecutors are now seeking the death penalty against Guy. He is charged with capital murder in Dinwiddie’s death, as well as three counts of attempted capital murder for firing on the other officers during the shootout, injuring one other officer. Body armor protected others who were hit.
This is wrong on so many levels… Everything he wanted to do is to save himself, his pregnant woman and their property. That’s what the 2nd amendment was created for. But he’s a black man, and if he had been white NRA supporters would be in the streets protesting his 2nd amendment rights and his right to defend his home.

Hell if he had been white they never would have considered pressing charges.
Justice for Martin Louis Guy!
Bust it.
Here’s the petition “Please drop the Capital Murder and Attempted Murder charges against Marvin Louis Guy for the shooting death of Officer during a No-Knock Raid at his Home”.

If you’re not a horror buff, you might not have realized this, but: Night of The Living Dead, the movie credited with bringing the zombie genre to life (heh) starred a Black man. In 1968.
The splendid documentary Year Of The Living Dead covers, with somewhat surprising depth, the significance of Duane Jones (above) playing Ben, who steps up as the marauding undead approach the farmhouse in which he and several white people take shelter.
It’s also observed that the film’s script does not provide for a “We need to put aside our differences” moment, though director George Romero says that was a coincidence; he just didn’t make any changes to Ben’s dialogue after casting Jones.
The film also shows the eerie resonance of several of the movie’s scenes with the social climate of the time; to put it bluntly, the sight of a white “posse” using dogs and firearms to pursue the zombies becomes more chilling when viewed through that framework.
Birth also chronicles the film’s rough ride from filming to production (part of the film’s post-production work was made possible by a crew member winning a chess match!) to distribution. The second photo shows the triple bill Night eventually topped in New York. How’s that for a geeky golden age?

#MCM: Crooklyn (1994)

Every Monday we’ll highlight a film set in New York that’s related to the Black film industry. Our inagural crush is dedicated to Spike Lee’s Crooklyn (1994). Zelda Harris stars as Troy in this coming of age film that takes place in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn during the summer of 1973. The film is a semi-autobiographical story co-written by Lee, his brother Cinque and his sister Joie. If you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend that you add it to you “to watch” list immediately.
