a good way to inspire yourself to do more is to see yourself as the wacky sitcom B plot character in your friends lives, "wouldnt it be funny to tell the friends in my phone about it." has gotten me to do anything from going to a festival (excelent) to wild camping (it went badly) (coastguard called) to trying to get the train to stonehenge (stonehenge costs money so i ended up just getting lunch in sailsbury, it was okay.) i bought a bicycle today and 20% of my reasoning was "itd be funny to surprise my roommate by coming home with a whole bike." . life is for living. and baby i live for the bit.

What particularly gets me about BEAST isn't just the fates of certain characters or the lives both changed and ruined through a butterfly effect, but how melancholic it paints the future for everyone in the ending. Gin's spared and the entire plan to execute her had been a ruse, but she's never heard from again. Atsushi's fired from the Port Mafia and suddenly finds himself out on the streets in a similar parallel to his self in the original world until he meets Mori at the orphanage. Kyouka, presumably, disappears without a trace because she only came back and stayed in the mafia for Atsushi, and now has no loyalty to the organization. And, of course, there's Chuuya who's overcome with grief from Dazai's death and gets thrown in prison. It feels like...very give-and-take for all those involved in the world. Akutagawa met up with his sister, but had to face rejection and now she's gone missing but he's still pursuing her. Atsushi was freed of his shackles to the mafia, but now he must find himself again and contend with his past. Kyouka's freed, too, by proxy, but now she's a fourteen-year-old entirely alone on the streets. Dazai's wish to preserve a world where Oda lived happens, but at the cost of destroying Chuuya and having it ripple through the mafia. Mori takes in Atsushi as his son until Atsushi finds himself, but also at the cost of not being able to save Dazai.

And then Elise says this to Atsushi, and I feel like it applies to almost the entire cast. Akutagawa wants to live for the agency and his sister and refuses to give up on her because he still has that hope. He has something to hope for when so many others lost that hope and are just drifting—not dying, but not really living. Akutagawa aches not just for his sister, but for those around him, knowing they seem to have nothing to live for and just merely exist. He killed many in his quest, seeing people as obstacles in the past, and then chose to spare Atsushi of all people. Along with witnessing Dazai's death, Akutagawa got a good look at how broken someone can truly be.

fucked up hurt/comfort. the person who stabbed you tends to your wound. the person who killed your loved one helps you grieve.

I bet Dazai is just absolutely loved by elderly people.

Like, he's the guy playfully flirting with elder women and playing chess with the old men at the parks. They're always pinching his cheeks and calling him a "nice young man". They're spontaneously giving him sweets whenever they see him.

A case sends Kunikida and Dazai to a retirement home for information and Kunikida is immediately concerned about how Dazai's going to act around his elders.

But within 20 minutes of them being there, Dazai has practically been adopted by several of the residents. He's still done absolutely no work because he's too busy making plans to come back and visit his new friends.

Kunikida, whilst glad Dazai isn't giving anyone a heart attack with his usual antics, complains that they need to get back on track because this case is time sensitive. Then a kindly grandpa turns to him and says, "Hey, life's short. You shouldn't be so serious all the time, try to be more like your friend here, eh?"

And Kunikida has to use every ounce of self control he has to not go insane.
