BERTHOLD - FINAL WEEK
Very sad that this week is my final week of interning at Berthold. We have got straight on with what we had left last week, Raimund had a meeting with Martin in the morning to finalise the prices for the AW18 garments that would be going on sale. By Tuesday morning we had finished pricing all of the garments and we started packing them up ready to take to Raimunds flat tomorrow afternoon. We had decided to do some trips this afternoon to get the majority of the things over there as we would be spending the whole of Thursday setting up, as the sample sale was Thursday evening.
WEDNESDAY - with basically the entire studio packed up we spent the day taking the rails, garments and all the things we needed over to Raimunds flat over in Vauxhall and we started to set up ready for tomorrow. Very busy day and felt like I was back at JWA running to and from places throughout the whole day!! I love being out and about and being rushed, it gives me a real buzz. Finished the day an hour early to get a good rest before tomorrow.
THURSDAY - SAMPLE SALE DAY! In the morning we met straight at Raimunds apartment with the team and started properly setting up everything, organising all the rails in season and putting all of the accessories out on display. It was really nice to finally being able to see everything in order and looking super organised ready for the friends and customers that would be coming later on. Raimund bought us all lunch in and we had a big feed to energise us for what was to come. The two house maids were setting up the outside area and preparing the endless bottles of champagne that we were to make sure everyone had a glass of when they arrived. The social media team arrived with their interns too and we had a group meeting of everyones roles and how to sell the clothes. The girls and I had organised the gym room into a stock room so we were able to quickly nip into their when a customer asked for a different size or colour. Then we all got changed into Berthold garments, as seeing something on someone could easily sell the garments! The night was a huge success, champagne was flowing and there were a ton of very happy customers. I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of artists who I had seen the work of recently, Hannah Perri being one of them. I was praised by Raimund on my people skills and salesmanship throughout the evening! The night really reinforced me thinking about venturing into the social side of the industry as its such a natural skill I have.
FRIDAY - We met once again at Raimunds apartment and took everything down and packed up ready to take things back over to the studio. Packing up was a lot faster than when we were bringing things over because we had sold so much which was great. Once we got back to the studio we started organising the garments back onto their seasonal rails so Martin could start a stock count the following week. Raimund took us all out for lunch for my last day and bought a huge cake, had a chilled rest of the day just catching up about the sale and how the evening went. I had such a lovely last day and gutted to be leaving as I have gained friends for life! An entirely different experience to JWA and I feel so fortunate to of experienced different ends of the industry.

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 11
CARNAGE!! This week was extremely stressful. We all had to price up every garment we had in the studio. Doing this was a long process as we had so many garments from all different seasons. Getting everything prepared for the sample sale next week was the most fast paced thing I had done in this entire internship! Going from such a big brand JWA where they was a lack of communication which resulted as a lot of stress and having to do things last minute, to a small brand where the studio manager was very organised and we had a week to complete one task was a huge leap. So, it was quite nice to be on my toes running around endlessly making sure everything was done and completed ready to be boxed up and put to one side. I really enjoyed the rush of it, it gives you such energy and I think it really makes you feel like a real part of the industry. At the end of the week we had organised and labelled the majority of all of the stock, we still had some left to do at the beginning of next week but it was only the things of the most recent season that Raimund needed to confirm prices with Martin for. Bring on next week, sample sale and my final week of interning at such a great brand!

Laura’s attitude to a very stressful week, still smiles all round...

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 10
This was the start of the next 3 weeks of organising all of our stock we had in the studio for the sample sale. All 3 of us had to count all of the stock from SS14 all the way to the most current season being AW18 and sorting it all out into different rails. This took up majority of the week, a couple of stylists had come in to take different garments for a some of their shoots. I had forgotten to mention this before throughout my diary but this happened regularly. When a stylist came in, we helped them look for the kind of thing they might be interested in based on the brief that they email us, then we have to take photos of each garment and keep a record of what date they were taken and what date they were going to bring them back. Then pack up all the garments properly into garment bags, and if they were specific looks then to print out the correct look shot and pack that into the bag also. This gave us all a lot of responsibility but made us become very organised.

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 9
This week we were beginning to start on some scarfs to use up the rest of some quilted fabric they had left over from a previous season, this was because in 3 weeks we were having a sample sale! I had to measure up all the fabric and work out how many scarves we could make up and then go out and source some jersey to go with them. Silvana was then left with Laura to cut out and make a start on those, whist I organised all of the stock in the other room into season, garment style etc and then fold and pack them. This was a couple of days job but it was nice to have a break from being so hands on at the sewing machine. At the end of the week I was given the job of going through previous season mood board pictures and sourcing them, this also filled the rest of the week as there wasn’t much else for me to do in the studio.

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 8
This week I was given a new project, this time it was to work on one of the new coat designs for AW19. I had to take two separate patterns from previous seasons and work out based on my own interpretation how to combine two garments into one, and experiment with whether to connect them or not. We had Sam in this week and so she was there to advise me whilst I was going through my design process which was helpful. After all of her experience she was showing me different ways of thinking about how a garment can be connected, showing me her thought process has massively broadened my way of thinking about how a garment can be constructed. I found this a real challenge but I was so keen throughout the whole project as I was constantly learning along the way of it. I learnt how to sew up a storm cuff which I hadn't done before, it was quite difficult but now I feel confident that I can definitely use that as a feature in my future designs as I love the look of them and they are very practical. This has definitely been my favourite project so far and has reinforced my love for outerwear.

Final toile up of my project !

POLLY NOR Exhibition

I went to this exhibition as I have always loved Polly Nors work. The colours of the latex I really enjoyed and I think I might use as colour palette inspiration for my American Prep project

Tania Bruguera exihibition at the Tate. It was one of the most moving and emotional projects I have ever witnessed. Such a sensitive and fragile subject to base an art project on but her creative talent and intelligence brought all of the right feelings and information through to the viewers. The room that forced you to cry was my favourite part.

TATE MODERN. I visited the Tate for some personal research for my uni work and found Fernell Francos work so gripping. I love the tied ropes holding the boxes together, it gave me a lot of inspiration into how I could design

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 7
Monday, it was my job with Silvana to put together the mood board and hang it up in the studio that Laura had been working on the research for. I found this quite a good task as we had to play around with the images quite a lot until the layout really fitted together, really reminded me of how time consuming putting portfolio boards can be! That afternoon and Tuesday, I was given the social media account to advertise the collection that we were selling online, this was interesting as it made me realise I really enjoyed being in control of the social media, it also made me think that I could be quite good at being in the social department of the industry. Mid week, Raimund had some important meetings with the new PR agency and he needed the whole studio, so we went out on a research trip around the different museums to look for print inspiration, based off the mood board we had created for the new collection.

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 5/6

Already completed my first month at Berthold, cant even believe how fast it was going already!! Over the next couple of weeks we were going through the toile rail the other interns and I had completed, and were checking over them to make any last alterations with Sam. This was quite a long process as we had all had a few projects each. All of our jobs were to assist Sam in whatever she wanted us to do, with there being 3 of us it made things a lot quicker which was good. Along side that I had to go out and drop off some garments for customers that had previously come to the studio to try on what they wanted. One of my drop offs was for the CD of Sotheby's art gallery, where the Banksy painting had just been partly shredded. Busy two weeks, I found that i was getting really close to my team, with it being so small too. I was also memorising the different garment codes and seasons of the different garments we kept pulling out to refer to the new collection.

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 4
This week we had Sam in, she is a freelance pattern cutter. Her previous work she has worked for Paul Smith and Versace over in Milan, I was really keen to get as many questions and tips in to increase my knowledge of pattern cutting. Working along side her and watching her work was amazing, to have her knowledge of how a garment is constructed is something I aim to have one day. This week I was set another garment to work on and it was my task to play with the sleeve length and width. I was really enjoying starting on something new every week, I felt it was slowly easing me back into the different aspects of pattern cutting and it made me feel a lot more confident about the skills I thought I had forgotten. I had also realised that the main concentration Raimund has for his garments is the fit. That’s why we were making up toiles after toiles and constantly copying and changing the pattern over and over, to make sure it was the perfect fit for the customer and also complimented the initial design he wanted. The garment I was working on had the same routine as last week, making up the sleeve toile and pinning it to the garment and having a fit and making the alterations we needed to until Raimund approved it.

BERTHOLD - Placement - Week 3
This week we were briefed on different garments we were going to work on as our own projects again. I was asked to work on another jumper, this one had a funnel neck but Raimund wanted it to have a particular fit. I was told I had to make up a new pattern based of one of the jumpers from a previous collection along side the new details he wanted it to have. I was very nervous as I hadn’t done any pattern cutting at my previous placement, but I surprised myself with remembering quite a lot from university. Over the next couple of days I had made up the pattern and a toile, had a fit with Raimund and he had told me the slight changes he wanted to make, bringing in the neck more etc and I then completed those changes for him. This jumper was made from sweatshirt jersey and this project has shown me how I can cut jersey in a certain way in order to make the garment fit properly. E.g. cutting it on across the grain etc to give the neckline more lee way. The design was a difficult one to complete as it was a loose fitting jumper with a dropped neckline but he wanted the funnel neck to be tight and stand, after many attempts and several toiles, I managed to complete my project by the end of the week and added it to the rail of completed toiles to be checked over by Sam, Raimunds pattern cutter.

As you can see the first toile up didn't quite fit.....
