i do believe in neil's ability to cry on command, and this is not like an ugly cry it's like the most beautiful cinematic movie perfect crying ever seen. it was like the second thing mary taught him while on the run because crying children are extremely sympathetic + u gotta start the manipulating gene young. anyway i think he starts using it to run cons on the foxes during his second year. Most affected are matt and nicky (andrew is adamant that he's not affected but he almost always indulges him), least affected are dan and aaron. renee thinks its funny + allison is just extremely jealous and annoyed because he does it better than her (neil loves dunking on her w this). in my vision the first time this happens it's because the foxes bet that neil can't get the press to shut up without tearing them to shreds, and neils like ugh whatever bets are stupid but this is his Pride on the line. so he waits for someone to ask something suitably insensitive and then just bursts into gorgeous photogenic tears and the foxes are freaking out and the reporter is like oh my god im a horrible person and quits his job and then they get into the locker room and neil just. flips the switch. and everyones like ohhhhhh you bastard. you're evil. also kevin and renee are the only ones to win the bet

The two first books hold such bangers, and clearly not enough people ramble about them. I'm a sucker for the relationship they have afterwards obviously, but even before that they're hilarious. Many underrated scenes that could be worth drawing.

Also I underestimated how Neil dress and presents himself - like: he wears oversized, worn out and faded, preferably light-colored clothes; messy curlyish hair with bangs; sports hoodies; JORTS-

... He's got a banger style actually.

He spent 3 books building this relationship he was whole heartedly incapable of understanding. This boy had never witnessed attraction. He's aware of it, yeah, but where would he have seen people show love?

He thought he understood, traumatized young adult to traumatized young adult, their dynamic. This boy has never even had friends before, yall.

He's unraveling at the seams as his entire concept of how humans interact shifts to include trust and love

there's something about neil and the ease with which he withstands torture but is fully undone by simple pleasure. 2 weeks in the nest that he can barely remember but his refusal to bend to riko and tetsuji is Easy for him. not even the slightest temptation to sign their contract because pain is something so easily endured. neil kisses andrew and it is the worst thing and best thing that ever happens to him. his father and lola and his mother trained him to endure a million different kinds of pain to survive but it's andrew kissing him that neil decides to die for. he has noo defenses against andrew's touch it breaks him down in a way all the pain and torture was never able to do. makes you think huh.

it makes me giggle thinking about Matt going to get Neil from the Monster's dorm for a girls night (the girls just make Matt go get him because Neil is the least suspecting of Matt to pull him into the girl's shit) but when Matt walks in Neil is sprawled on the couch with Andrew completely blanketed over him and Matt's core processing just fries itself, he can't figure out exactly how he is supposed to process what he is seeing because Andrew Minyard doesn't cuddle and above all else, Andrew Minyard is an astonishingly private person. but Matt bears witness to something quite personal and Neil just grins and waves gently, but Matt gets the 'I'm busy' memo

it's wild that the only reason jean would have known about nathaniel is if kevin or riko told him. like, tetsuji sure as fuck isn't going to do something so sentimental as telling jean he was meant to have a partner, even if he did remember the kid he had met once. which means, kevin really wasn't lying when he told neil they remember him. it means they thought enough about nathaniel and about what it would have been like had he stayed that they managed to pass that sentiment onto jean. maybe jean felt nathaniel's absence the most, but kevin and riko were the reason he knew there was someone to miss at all.
