Hello, sorry if you've answered this question before, but what advice would you give to a absolute beginner learning to draw fantasy character illustration art? (Also do you draw while high? Since that is the only way I know how I can experience new methods of thought openly without judgement.)
I'm a bit late on the answer and i blame Tumblr for not showing me that I've received messages.
But if it is still worth something...
Surround yourself with references! Find artists that you love and grab every piece you like, fill folders with amazing art and try to understand what they did there, not just what is drawn but how they did it, look for patterns and styles, try to focus on what you think it looks cool on that pieces, find videos, interviews, study it and try to copy it, yeah! Copy it! Try to emulate what you see, try to change the subject, try to add things or remove things, add your spin in to it.
Of course it will not look good, and it may not look good for years, being an artist is a constant battle between frustration and progress. Even if you think it's not, you are progressing somehow, even if a little bit. Damm I still think I suck most of the times! But i know I've grew over the years, and what I've done two years ago are not at all at the same level as the pieces I do today.
Our styles are an amalgamation of everything we like, everyone one style is based on dozens of hundreds of art we've saw over the years, every piece that made you feel something, every piece you've just find it cool, everything contributes to your development. You've just need to keep trying and trying. Is the same thing with music, learning an instrument is an unending journey.
And please try to keep enjoying the process of drawing. It's easy to lose your hand and see it as work, or as a tedious chore. I've fallen into that a bunch of times. Most of the times I've saw progress was when I've had fun doing it.
I'm not good on advice, but take it slow, you have your whole life for it, you don't need to be a master in short time. Don't compare yourself with others, everyone has they're own pace. But everyone is capable of great things...Patience...
And about being high, mate, whatever floats your boat. I personally never drew high, mostly because the few times i do get high i prefer to listen to music and sleep to relax. But if you think it helps you, great! Go for it, just don't overdo it and be safe!
Cheers!
