the themes of the two canon couples circle around time together and using immortality to draw out the questions long-term couples face -- will my beloved keep waking up and choosing to be the person i love? will i keep choosing to be the person they love? what does it mean to build your whole life (and yourself) around another who can always change or leave or fail you? who will, in some way or another, *inevitably* fail you. and your love will have to be remade over and over in the face of that.

that comes up first when andy is talking to nile after remembering everything quynh was to her

and then is resolved in the moment where she trusts quynh to choose who she wants to be in the hopes that it will be someone andy can recognize (and love). she doesn't force it because you can't force it -- it's the mystery of the other person to decide. and sometimes their decisions take them away from you -- and sometimes their decisions bring them back to you, even after it seemed all hope was lost

this relates to joe and nicky's conversation, those lines about how "what i feel when i see you... that's truly immortal." it is truly immortal. it is also fragile, hanging by the slender thread of someone else's choices about who they want to be, which can change at any time -- and that is what makes it miraculous and beautiful.

(as other married people have said -- it's possible that this story worked better for many of us because it is *about us*, not about young people and their povs on love)

in the same way andy doesn't FORCE humanity to bend to her will but tries to make better outcomes more possible--and in the same way she was able to accept mortality, if that was her fate, whereas Discord wants everything her way ALWAYS--andy is able to accept that quynh has choices to make, in the face of what was done to them, in the face of andy's failings and humanity. and quynh chooses to be the person andy loves -- and love the person andy is. their love is stronger than death, both literal and figurative (the deaths of loss and separation, trauma, and of failing each other) because they each choose for it to be
