Viewpoint: Protect our planet, livelihoods from global warming

OPINION Stabenow: We need to take action on climate change, lead a green industrial revolution Published 5:52 PM EDT Mar 21, 2019 Sen. Debbie Stabenow submitted photo Some call it climate change. Some call it global warming. Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe has a better term. She calls it “global weirding.” Things are getting weird here in Michigan. Lake Superior is getting about two degrees warmer each decade. As the waters warm, invasive species like sea lamprey grow and kill off more trout, salmon and other native fish – threatening the Great Lakes’ $8 billion recreational fishery. A warmer planet can also cause cold snaps. As the arctic warms, scientists believe the atmosphere is less able to keep cold air where it belongs. That’s when we get a “Polar Vortex” like we saw in January. Here in Lansing, it was 14 degrees below zero – cold enough to cause frostbite in less than 30 minutes. Climate change is also making our weather more intense. Ask any meteorologist – a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture. That means heavier snows and more rain over a shorter period of time – a recipe for catastrophic storms. If you don’t believe me, ask insurance company executives. Their companies paid out a record $135 billion from natural catastrophes in 2017 alone – almost three times as much as the historic annual average.  What's being done to stop global warming Climate change is real. It’s already having real effects in Michigan. And we can and must take real action to do something about it. Michigan has always been the state of innovation. Fueled by oil and coal, we led the Industrial Revolution. Now we need to be leaders again – of a green industrial revolution that will reduce carbon pollution, help reverse the damage that’s already been done and create good jobs here at home. I’m working with my colleagues on policies to ensure that the United States – not China – is the global leader on advanced transportation technologies like electric and hydrogen vehicles. And we need to invest more in renewable energy and the research that is making it more affordable all the time. A modern wind turbine has about 8,000 parts, and we can build every part here in Michigan. Our farmers understand the stakes. When warm weather in February causes our cherry trees to bloom too early, a cold snap in March can wipe out an entire crop – and a family’s livelihood. From cherry growers to dairy farmers to corn producers, family farms across the state are seeing real impacts of the changing climate. That’s why the 2018 Farm Bill I co-authored helps farmers keep carbon in the ground – where it can build richer, more productive soil – and out of the atmosphere, where it contributes to climate change. The Farm Bill protects the popular Forest Legacy Program to keep land forested and preserved from development. It also restores national forest landscapes, protects carbon-rich old growth trees and gives the Forest Service new tools to help prevent devastating wildfires and the pollution they cause. Our electric utilities in Michigan have committed to dramatically increase renewable electricity, reduce carbon emissions by 80 percent and stop burning coal. It’s easy to think that climate change is such a huge issue that there’s nothing we can do about it. That’s simply not true. Around 40 years ago, scientists discovered that emissions from power plants were combining with moisture in the air, which then fell as acid rain, polluting our waters. Since then, market-based programs have significantly reduced emissions while improving the health of our environment. And in 1987, the world agreed to take action to phase out chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, chemicals that break down into chlorine in the atmosphere and eat away at the ozone layer. After taking action, the hole in the ozone layer has begun to close, and scientists believe it may be totally repaired by 2060. When it comes to eliminating carbon pollution, in the wise words of Hank Williams, Jr., we need “a little less talk and a lot more action.” You can count on me to keep taking action on climate change, because there’s no time like the present to protect Michigan’s future.
