If I don't wear something "stereotypically dark academia" but still really like the vibes, meaning, and aesthetic, can I still be part of the community? Sometimes I feel bad that I don't have blazers or plaid trousers and stuff.

yes! you can! a lot of the dark academia aesthetic revolves around tweed and blazers and turtlenecks and whatnot, but don't let being a dark academic limit you! the core of dark academia isn't about what you wear, but about knowledge and creativity and imagination. clothes are just a minuscule part of the community. you do not have to feel bad for not wearing clothes that are usually quite expensive and difficult to find. as long as you feel a sense of belonging in the community, you can wear whatever you want! recite shakespeare dramatically while wearing jeans and a t shirt! carry tiny old books in the front pocket of a hoodie! sit by your desk in the dark hours of the night translating greek in your sweatpants! don't let one aesthetic define you! you contain multitudes!

How awesome does this sound though. You get infinite money and once a week you get to take a child to a candy store or toys or us or somewhere they love and buy them as much they want this would be fun given the kid wasn’t a brat.

Just had my nth conversation with someone about mask-wearing today - yet another well-intentioned moron who was like 

‘But the virus is gone now’ (it isn’t) 

‘But the mask is uncomfortable’ (ventilators are worse)

‘But you’re young, you won’t die’ (having this thing could impact my health for decades to come + it’s my responsability to protect those who’re more vulnerable than I am because that’s how society works)

‘But are you going to live in fear for the rest of your life’ (taking concrete safety measures actually helps me feel more in control and less worried)

‘But are you going to give up everything and stay inside like a rat’ (no, but I’m definitely going to decide what’s worth risking my health for, and shopping for bread rolls is not very high on my list of literally-to-die-for activities)

‘But what if they never find a vaccine’ (then we’ll get used to the situation just like we got used to a thousand other things like seat belts, bike helmets, and increasingly weird true crime podcasts). 

I know it’s tiring to have people call you paranoid all the time - but you’re right and they’re wrong. Check the news, keep a safe distance from others whenever possible and keep wearing your mask!

I’ve now seen three Artemis Fowl trailers, each one worse than the last, and no shitty adaptation has ever filled me with this kind of rage at the destruction of source material. That includes Avatar, Percy, Eragon, Dragonball, you name it, and yes I understand the weight of that claim.

I have such rage in me right now.

The thing about Artemis Fowl that makes it unique as a story is that Artemis – the main goddamn character – is distinctly the “supervillain”. He combines his genius IQ with youthful belief in magic to discover that fairies do, in fact, exist. He has no greater interest in them other than exploiting them for their gold. This is a fucking heist story. His attitude is cool and calculating at all times, in a way that unnerves those who meet him. He has a devoted Butler that does all the leg work of fighting and he does not get his own hands dirty until well into book 2 when he literally has no choice. The books are clear that his actions are wrong, they don’t underestimate the readers’ ability to understand this, and they don’t pressure you on “likability” before throwing you into the main events.

And what they’ve turned it into instead is some naive kid in his pajamas being told “actually, our family has a long history of opposing fairy-kind”. Suddenly he’s been “trained his whole life”, out there fighting and firing weapons in order to steal some ancient artifact “to save mankind”?!?!?! His unnerving demeanor has been sabotaged with just the standard display of emotion you’d expect from any kid in a children’s action movie. There’s clearly been an effort to make Artemis seem like he’s slightly a victim of what life has thrown at him instead of him being in full control of his choices.

I’m not even prepared to rant right now about Holly, compelling first female officer pushing to succeed in an all-male field diluted down to age-reduced-for-love-interest ordinary kidnapped fairy.

I love these books. They’re unique and vibrant in story, and it’s heartbreaking to see how they’re being mutilated for this movie.

The most adequate way I could summarize my rage right now is “THANKS, I FUCKING HATE IT”.
