I run a D&D club for 9-10 year olds and here are some of my favourite things that have happened:

• A child called me my teacher name and another very angrily shouted “She’s not miss right now, she’s DM!”

• “Can I name my character Eren Yeager?”

• “Can I roll to rizz up the sun?”

• (While they were discussing their characters) “Should I be preppy or emo?”

• One kid named his character ‘Flamer’ and I had to carry on like it is not a slur

• “My character doesn’t talk so I will write everything on a whiteboard”

• “I’m 69 years old” *laughs* (when I asked why that’s funny, they said “Because that’s how old my grandad is”)

• “I’m not in this scene so I guess my character will just be watching youtube shorts”

Actually heartwarming things:

• A little boy very nervously came over to me after class and asked if he could make a girl character, and then handed me the most beautiful drawing of a very pretty sea elf

• When that same boy told the rest of the kids about his character, the only reaction was, “You’re a girl? Woah cool!”

• A neurodivergent kid got the last hit in on the bbeg and all the other kids ran over to hug her

• Three kids have started their own D&D group outside of school

• “Miss do you make all of this up on the spot? You’re a very good writer”

• Three parents have told me that their kids have come home more outgoing and confident from just 5 sessions of playing
