“How much sleep did you get last night?” 

He heard the worry in her question and decided to ignore it. Unable to face her he stood at the table and spooned the tea leaves into the pot. He hadn’t slept at all. He had tossed, turned, and cursed the world, himself, her, and most of Gerald Hammond. The homewrecker. He couldn’t even look after his own dog, but suddenly he wanted to start a family. Siegfried felt as if the man was practically dancing on his grave. Within a year he had lost each and everyone of the people he loved. His brother, his partner, Helen, and now Mrs Hall. All gone. He lost them to war or to life. Or both. 

Surely, she had offered to stay on for a while. As long as he needed her. She didn’t want to inconvenience him. Inconvenience. The word itself had sounded like mockery. 

The sound of her mob as she tried to clean up the mess the broken pipe had left, reminded him of his failures. Of everything he couldn't fix despite his best efforts. He tried to sound as if he cared about the lack of water for the foreseeable future and she kept telling him about her chores, the laundry and everything she needed to do, but to him her everyday talk was pure cynicism. It was a routine she wanted to give up for a life away from him and what they had built together.  

“Did you read me letter?” 

“Would it make any difference if I had?” 

It was the sound of the ringing phone that saved him from losing his temper completely. He needed to get away from her or he would go mad. Her presence, usually cherished, adored, and needed, was now a burden. He couldn’t bear her beautiful eyes that carried so much pity for him in them. The sound of her soothing voice tore at his heart strings, because it didn’t utter the words he needed to hear so badly. 

It never would. 

So, there was the voice of Carmody, which gave him something to do, and asked him to be a vet. A vet he could be. That was his forte. He could fix the animals that needed a lifesaver, but the vet in question couldn’t do anything to save himself. 

He never could.

I’m all ready to read and reread anything Chelsie!!! So excited!!

My little "comeback fic" is about halfway done - the second half is giving me a serious challenge, though, I tell you what. It's been so great to write about the goobers being married and loving it again even if I feel like it's taken me a million years to get done even the tiny bit I have written so far...Well, quality over quantity, am I right?

Hopefully, there is still someone out there willing to read it once it's finished!
