Kamikaze Girls Novel Exclusive Details
Tumblr media
[ not my picture, my used copy didn't come with a book jacket )'''''': ] Spoilers for the Kamikaze Girls 2002 novel, May 2004 movie, and 2004 manga. Very, very long post.
Momoko's Name -The first name of Kamikaze Girl's titular main character, Momoko Ryugasaki, means "peach child", which Momoko dislikes, thinking it vaguely voluptuous sounding, and that she has to share it with some former Yanki female comedian from Osaka. But the name also holds a special meaning for Yanki everywhere, adding to her distaste for it.
-Momoko explains that back in the 1980s, "when Yanki were at the height of their glory, there was a manga that was passed from hand to hand among them (especially the girls) as their Bible. This was Kazuko Makino's High-teen Boogie."
-A true-love story of a biker-gang boss falling in love with a high school honors student, Momoko confesses to having had read it herself, and found it lacking in factors that she would expect to excite Yanki (lacking in fight or racing scenes, and the story shifts to a rise to stardom plot partway through).
-But she theorizes its popularity stems from its encapsulation of the Yanki way and the Yanki dream: a 17 year old biker gang boss dropping out of high school with a 16 year old girlfriend, successfully overcoming various trials, moving in together, having a baby at 17, and getting married while still in their teens.
-The boy's name was Sho, and the girl's name was Momoko. -Momoko isn't 100% certain her parents gave her the name from having read High-teen Boogie, but regardless, found herself getting threatened and beaten up on occasion for being a non-Yanki with a special Yanki name.
-Like Momoko, Ichiko Shirayuri also dislikes her name. -Ichiko's assigned first name is "Ichigo", but it's a "cutsie-ass" name, and in tandem with her floral last name, is unbefitting of a Yanki, so she spells "Ichigo" with a k instead of a g. -"Ichigo" means "strawberry", so both girls have fruit themed names. -Momoko says she wishes they could trade, and Ichiko agrees.
-A peach and strawberry can be seen in the embroidery-stylized font for the title of the hardcover book + manga.
High Schools -Momoko is a second year at Shimotsuma Nansei High School, commonly referred to as "Shimonan", and has a high college acceptance rate and viewed as relatively elite for Ibaraki. -Ichiko is a second year at Oume Kogyo High School, known for a close-to-zero college acceptance rate. -Momoko remarks that's the school for dummies and Yanki, but she narrarates she could care less about test scores and college acceptance rates. -Her real issue lies with the unofficial and vulgar nickname of Oume Kogyo: "Omeko", a word used in Kansai to mean "vagina" or "sexual intercourse" (Wikipedia), and Momoko thinks girls shouldn't use such filthy words. -Ichiko's favorite class is sheet metal processing, and Japanese is her worst subject.
Ponytails -Momoko asks Ichiko why her gang is called the Ponytails, and Ichiko says it's obviously because Momoko from High-teen Boogie wears her hair in a ponytail.
Music Tastes -Momoko listens to Bach and Johann Strauss. -Ichiko listens to Eikichi Yazawa (Ei-chan) because everybody else does, and loves Yutaka Ozaki.
Age and Height Comparison -Ichiko and Momoko are the same age, but Ichiko was born in April, and Momoko in June, so she lords it over Momoko, and Momoko calls her Ichigo to put her in her place. -Momoko is 150 cm (4.9 ft). -Ichiko is 167 cm (5.5 ft). Momoko's Small Business -Ichiko's fellow Zokki wanted Versace merch too, so Ichiko would act as a shopping intermediary. -She would arrive at Momoko's house and ask for a requested item, Momoko would dig out different variations of the item for Ichiko to show so they could pick out whichever item they liked best, and Ichiko would return to Momoko with the unselected items and the payment. This, alongside routine pachinko parlor trips, were how she funded her BTSSB purchases.
Unicorn Ryuji -In his second appearance, Momoko notes his wearing of tight-fitting black leather pants, which is fine, but has worn alongside them, white shiny patent leather shoes with no socks, which makes Momoko want to cry and very sad. -Ichiko notes the embroidery of Fujin (the god of wind) riding a tiger (Momoko thinks this combination is silly) on the back of his blue satin jacket is the same embroidery Akemi-san has on the front of her kamikaze coat. -Ryuji is a low-level racketeer for the yakuza because he wanted to be one; "an immoral bum who tries to be of a little service to others by taking on dirty work that respectable folks can't or don't want to do."
Momoko's Pachinko Luck -The book talks a lot about pachinko, which was fun to read about but don't particularly care to recap. -Unicorn Ryuji theorizes Momoko just has some sort of electromagnetic energy field/ki/aura that screws with the ROM of the pachinko machines, allowing her to win every time.
Emma in Daikanyama -Unlike in the movie, where Momoko after meeting Mr. Isobe agrees to help Ichiko look for Emma only to not end up finding them and then having a weird outburst at Ichiko for it, the two of them do find an Emma. -Momoko checks a phone book and finds an "Emma" under the embroidery business tag, and the two go find the location. -they arrive at a residential house with a sign that says "Emma", and they ring the doorbell and an ordinary 50-year old housewife lets them in. -The woman tells them she runs "Emma Embroidery and Handicraft School", and teaches embroidery and handicraft in her home as her hobby, with the target audience being regular ladies and girls in the Shibuya area. -From what she knows, there was a place called Emma in Nishi-Nippori until about 15 years ago, where the legendary master that was difficult to work with but did very fine work for Bosozoku related embroidery passed away from old age with no children or apprentices to take over. -The woman began teaching embroidery just about 15 years ago, so the rumor spread that the Bosozoku Emma moved from Nishi-Nippori to Daikanyama. -The woman doesn't want to change the name of her class despite the occasional gangster showing up due to the misunderstanding because her father came up with it before he died, so she wants to hold onto it for sentimental reasons.
Momoko's Kamikaze Coat Embroidery -After Momoko passes out from embroidering for 3 days straight, her grandma tucks her into bed and draws a beard and mustache and swirls on her face with a magic marker. -She says "That was funny, wasn't it?", and Momoko responds with a "Yeah." -Momoko embroiders "Thank You Akemi-san" as Ichiko requested, and also embroiders a tiny strawberry, which Ichiko is not too pleased about but does not stop her from appreciating the work overall. The movie also includes the tiny strawberry embroidery detail, although Ichiko doesn't comment on it.
Order of Events -In the movie, Momoko gives Ichiko her coat back and then falls asleep. When she wakes up, she finds a message from Isobe asking for her assistance. She then gets a call from Ichiko and she meets her by the riverside. She tells Momoko about how the graduation went and then cries. Momoko attempts the embroidery but finds herself in an existential crisis and calls to meet up with Ichiko. They talk, and Ichiko gets the call from her gang, which Momoko doesn't fully understand the details of. Momoko finishes the embroidery but has to decide between delivering the dress or going to Ichiko, and decides on going to Ichiko. She takes her grandma's scooter, drives, gets hit by a truck, gets back up again and drives to Ichiko. Ichiko squares off against Miko and there's a huge tussle, and Momoko freaks out at Ichiko's blood splattering all over her dress and wails on everybody with a stolen bat. She does her improv about being the daughter of the embroiderer Emma and legendary Himiko and with everybody cowed down to her, her and Ichiko make their escape, and Ichiko reveals she made Himiko up in an imaginary story she had sent to a biker mag and it had gotten published. Then, Ichiko models for BTSSB, and the movie concludes with the rumor of a legendary biker who sometimes wears frilly ass dresses. THE END.
-The events of the book differ in order and sometimes detail.
The Dress and the Photoshoot -Right after Akemi-san's graduation and Ichiko's cry sesh, Momoko gets an email from Mr. Isobe on her computer, requesting for her assistance. The garment factory messed up the sample for BTSSB's Fall/Winter line, which isn't uncommon and just requires a few more weeks of alterations to get it right, but Mr. Isobe really wants to use this JSK for a magazine ad in a week that can't be rescheduled, and he doesn't want to compromise by using some other dress instead. Here, the factory forgot to sew on the rose appliques on the front of the skirt. Isobe remembered Momoko's embroidery and felt she could do the dress justice, and reached out to her.
-Momoko accepts, and completes the task without unexcessive crisis. She asks Ichiko to accompany her to deliver it because of her nerves, and Ichiko agrees. Isobe gushes over how well it came out and invites the two to the magazine photo sesh.
-When the pre-arranged model arrives, she's wearing an eyepatch. During their car ride, her manager had noted her left eye was bloodshot and handed her some eye drops, but when she started screaming, he realized he had handed her wart remover by mistake (yeowch). It's a Saturday so no ophthalmologist clinics were open but they flushed it out at a drugstore and bought the eyepatch there. She takes it off to show Isobe the damage. Her manager asks if they could just touch up the photos digitally after, but Isobe refuses because she hasn't seen a proper doctor yet, and the time the shoot would take could make the damage permanent.
-He sends them off, and looks around. He settles on Ichiko, and asks her to model. Underneath her makeup, he can tell she has a great face and great skin, and asks her to save the shoot, and Ichiko agrees. Momoko asks if she's sure, and Ichiko says she owes Momoko and she can repay her back a little in this way.
-The shoot goes perfectly and Isobe invites Momoko and Ichiko to dinner with the rest of the staff, but Momoko declines, wanting to take advantage of being in Harajuku to go to Laforet Harajuku. Ichiko has repaid her debt to Momoko in full with interest, and Momoko wants to buy her a gift.
-For all you biker heads out there, Ichiko likes Honda since they made the CB400F. More bikers vouch for Kawasaki, and Ichiko agrees they're good, but Honda is greater. Yamaha and Suzuki "aren't even in the picture. Those are chick bikes."
-Momoko takes her to the Shinichiro Arakwa boutique at Laforet, brand based in Tokyo and Paris that creates distinctive clothing with a street feel, and has been putting out dual-name brand merch in collaboration with Honda since 1997.
-Momoko offers to buy her anything she sees and likes, and Ichiko selects a black hoodie with a red Honda logo on the front. It's stylishly cut and designed, and chic and cute when put on. Momoko's ulterior motives for taking her here was to make Ichiko a little more stylish and to customize her tastes bit by bit, without her noticing. That's what she narrates, anyways.
-A few days after the ad is published, Isobe calls to say customers have been besieging him for the NFS magazine dress, and Momoko says she could embroider some more. He asks for around 30 dresses for a limited release, and she agrees. He asks if Ichiko is available for more modeling work, as agencies have been reaching out to him trying to recruit her. Momoko says she'd have to ask but doubts she'll agree and Isobe agrees but asks to ask anyways. Finally, he asks if she knows what she'll do in the future and suggests she pursue fashion if not join him straight after high school, and Momoko admits she hasn't given her future any thought at all.
-Momoko calls Ichiko and she says she'll never do it full time but she'll do it once in a while since the pay is good. She goes the freelance route, as signing with an agency would mean taking on assignments she wouldn't want to do, so Momoko becomes her manager and schedules shoots in Ichiko's free periods. Her gang and the Tsuchiura motorcycle workshop come first. Ichiko doesn't care about repeating a grade but plans on graduating at some point.
Drawing the Line -After a while, Ichiko gets a call from her gang, telling her her modeling work is dishonorable and she has to come draw the line, which Momoko doesn't get.
-After Akemi graduated, Miko became the new boss and ordered a merge with the Tsuchiura chicks, who have more members, but the Ponytails have been around for longer so they get to keep the title. The gang has become bigger and everyone's acting all chummy but there's a power struggle underneath it all, and this bigger group has become such a pain, so she'll draw the line, quit, and bike on her own.
-Momoko dresses up for her meeting with Isobe for the 30 dresses, and has lunch with her Grandma and dad. He tells her about prepping for all of the festivals in Ibaraki and how much Yanki love them, and Momoko asks about what drawing the line means and she doesn't fully get his explanation but surmises Ichiko is going to by lynched. Momoko thinks that even if she was the one who had gotten her into modeling, it was Ichiko's own problem, and Ichiko said so herself. She would be mad at Momoko if she felt responsible, and the two of them maintained their strange friendship by staying out of each others' domains, even if they made fun of them.
-Even so, she feels bothered. She calls Isobe to reschedule and asks how to get to Ushiku Buddha. The station won't be fast enough, and her grandma hands her the keys to her Viva You bike. Momoko has no understanding of traffic laws and she's never driven a scooter but she hops on and goes. Her inner monologue changes to be all Yanki-like before she realizes how much Ichiko's language has unfluenced hers and corrects herself. When she takes a sharp right turn, the driver behind her, surprised by her change of course, crashes their car, but Momoko is focused on getting to the Ushiku Buddha.
-She arrives, brakes to hard, and takes a tumble. Ichiko is surrounded by something like thirty biker chicks, and they mostly disregard her, knocking her off as the weirdo who's been hanging around with Ichiko.
-Ichiko and Miko argue about why Ichiko has to draw the line, and Miko states Himiko gave her the order to unify Ibaraki. Ichiko calls her nothing more than a system-enforcing puppet and gives a great speech, basically about what she's picked up from Momoko's system of beliefs, and it's a great full circle regarding the influence the two girls have had on each other, and if I was more intellectually gifted I'd love to write a more in-depth analysis but alas I am not.
-Ichiko and Miko square off one-on-one but when Miko begins to lose the other girls jump in to beat up Ichiko. They pin her down and Miko prepares to cut her face up with two razor blades with a ten-yen coin sandwiched in between them (yipes). Momoko can't bear the thought Ichiko's face being permanently wounded, and because she burned out the engine of her scooter so she can't drive it right into them, she somehow musters up the strength to pick up her Viva You scooter to hurl at Miko, much to everyone's surprise including her own.
-Momoko did not want to arrive empty handed, so she had brought along water balloons and put them in the basket of the scooter, and they had tumbled out onto the ground and not exploded, I guess. She scoops them up and in her Kansai dialect, curses at them. "You sorry fucking bitches, you fuck with me and I'll make you regret it."
-She hurls balloons near their feet, despite knowing how meaningless this threat is yet carries on regardless. She demands they let Ichiko go before she does something she does not get the time to explain because they immediately concede and release her. Ichiko gets up and lights a cigarette, and walks over to her bike, and Momoko gets on as well.
-Ichiko chalks this win to her and Momoko, and Miko says she's made an enemy of every biker in Ibaraki, including Momoko. Ichiko says she can tell Himiko the next time Miko sees her - "tell her this from me -- you'll be sorry for this bitch." (Ichiko's catchphrase she picked up from a movie. Momoko states this is what the loser says, not the winner, but Ichiko continues to use it regardless.)
Ending -They drive off, and Ichiko compliments Momoko on her awesome fucking weapon and calls her one crazy chick. The scooter throw was a surprise but she was really ready to kill those guys, with how many balloons she threw. Momoko is confused, they were just plain old festival-stall balloons, and Ichiko brakes on her bike in surprise.
-What else would be in them but water? Momoko asks. Ichiko explains way back when, the really killer-fighter gangs filled up water balloons with gasoline or kerosene as bombs.
-The ending of the Kamikaze girls manga goes by the book rather than the movie, balloons and such. Not too sure if the manga came out before or after the movie, as they came out in the same year but I don't have the month the first manga chapter was first released in.
-Ichiko says nobody will have the guts to mess with her after all of this because the legendary Himiko doesn't exist. Ichiko wrote up her story and sent it in to Champ Road, where they unexpectedly published it in their spin-off side magazine, and the legend grew and grew. Somebody else added on the Emma embroidery detail later on. She told Momoko the story about Himiko because she wouldn't believe Ichiko about Emma.
-Ichiko offers to pick up the Viva You scooter later and get it repaired at the shop she works at. Momoko says she'll just buy her grandma a new one, and Ichiko says no and that she owes her anyways. Momoko says she doesn't have to pay it back, and Ichiko says she'll respect her policy of that, not that repairing the bike would even be enough. But she doesn't want to even pay it back. What Momoko did for her today was something she wanted to keep inside her forever.
-Ichiko starts up her bike again and watching the sparkling lake of Kasumigaura on this not very fast and very tasteless scooter, Momoko clings to Ichiko's waist. It wasn't very Rococo, but it wasn't so bad, either.
-Momoko thinks, no matter how much money Ichiko was offered to model, she would likely still go full time at the Tsuchiura repair shop. As for herself, she's still not too sure what she wants to do. She loves embroidery, and learns how rewarding it is to do it for others but feels the thrill of buying and wearing Lolita would fade were she to step over onto the production side of it. She'd rather be a pure fan of Baby as a customer, it's a more luxurious way of life. But there's no need to rush to a decision. As Ichiko had earlier stated: "If growing up means selling out on everything you believe in, then I'll just stay a kid." Momoko is still just a kid, and Moko is also a Lolita. She does not believe in growing up, and no matter how old she gets, will remain devoted to ruffles and frills. That, after all, is what being a Lolita is all about.
-If Baby The Stars Shine Bright were to release a scooter, Momoko would get a scooter license. Something white with wings that an angel would ride, and she would travel the roads of Shimotsuma together with Ichiko.
Oh Ichigo. My darling Ichigo. There's so much that I owe you, too. But I'm never paying any of it back - not a smidgen. You're also the one who showed me that growing up might not be such a bad thing after all. Thank you, Ichigo. This is much too embarrassing for me to ever say out loud, but you're the best friend I could ever have.
Feeling the wind against me I softly laid my head against Ichigo's back, the way I might with a lover.

And this is the other box I have been working on! I wanted this one to have the feeling of a doll case and a coffin simultaneously. The box was almost going to be vertical but for functionality it made more sense for it to be this way. The illustration is removable and can be replaced with others if desired (maybe different coordinate drawings to match what I’m wearing if I care to be that extra lol)
My intention was for these boxes to give off and oldschool vibe (being contrived from 70’s craft trend and doll cases) as lolita too was derived from edwardian and prairie girl aesthetics of the 70’s and early 80’s. But oldschool doesn’t work that way because the objective is more to recreate the era with what existed then rather than making alternate timelines from the same source material. Though, it is fashion and it doesn’t entirely matter I suppose.
If I ever acquire my dream dress, I’m totally going to make a box to match somehow.

Hello 👋,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Aziz, and I’m reaching out with a heartfelt plea to help my family find safety and reunite with our mother. 😞
The ongoing war in Gaza has torn my family apart. My mother and newborn sister are stranded in Egypt, while I, along with the rest of my sex family members, am trapped in the midst of the genocide in Gaza. We have not only been separated but have also lost our home and are enduring unimaginable hardships. 💔
Your support can make a difference. Whether by reading our story, donating, or sharing our campaign with others, you can help us reunite, find safety, and start anew. 🙏🕊
Thank you, from the depths of my heart, for your kindness, compassion, and solidarity during this difficult time. ❤🍉
