ch. 2: for the plot!

y/n had just gotten out of the pool before she saw mark walking back to his house from the direction of Jeno’s house, still clad in her frank ocean hoodie. Caught by surprise she had let out a dramatic gasp before slapping her hand across her mouth. Mark turned, squinting in her direction.

"y/n?" he called out, his voice a mix of surprise and curiosity.

y/n, feeling like a deer caught in headlights, seriously considered pretending she didn’t even hear him or even making a run for it. But before she could decide, Mark jogged over to her, closing the distance between them.

"Hey, I tried talking to you earlier but you kinda, uh, ran away?" he said, attempting to bridge the awkward gap with conversation. “Speaking of earlier, did you take a picture of me? You never responded to my text."

"Uh, never mind that. Were you ever planning on giving back my favorite hoodie?" she quickly deflected, trying to regain her composure.

Mark chuckled, looking down at the hoodie. "Haha, this is yours, isn't it?"

They stood there in awkward silence for a moment, until Mark noticed y/n nervously wringing her hands. His eyes widened as he recognized two of his rings on her fingers.

"Hey, are those my rings?" he asked, surprised that she still had them after all this time.

y/n glanced down at her hands, a smirk forming on her lips. "Oh yeah, don’t they look way better on me than they ever did on you?"

There it was—the y/n that Mark knew so well. Slightly mean, but in a cute, endearing way. He laughed, shaking his head. "Nah, totally keep them. I'll wash your hoodie first, then give it back. When's the next time I'm gonna run into you like this?"

"I don't know? Whenever you see me, I guess," y/n shrugged, already turning to walk away.

Mark watched her retreating figure, a chuckle escaping his lips. "See you around, y/n," he called after her, not knowing that it would be a lot sooner than later.

interlude: fortnite and criminal minds

Y/n and Mark had met the summer before they started college working at the same boba shop down the block from their neighborhood. having no plans before college they became quick friends, spending most days with each other. They spent countless summer nights having sleepovers, binging entire seasons of Criminal Minds, and playing Fortnite until they physically couldn’t keep their eyes open.

Y/n had been pondering the idea of confessing her feelings to Mark for a while. Sure, they were great friends, but friends didn’t look at each other the way they did. Friends didn’t search for each other's eyes while laughing after someone made a joke in a group. Friends didn’t leave lingering touches and fall asleep in each other's arms. Y/n tended to overthink every little interaction, but this time she had outdone herself. She had come to the conclusion that Mark did like her back. And for once, she felt like her delusions might not be so far-fetched.

It was a regular day for Mark and y/n. He was sitting in his bean bag chair, engrossed in fortnite, with y/n perched comfortably across his lap. She had grown unusually quiet, which was strange for her, considering she was usually pointing out things in the game or talking about some crazy shit Jisung had said to her yesterday.

"Penny for your thoughts?" Mark said, nudging her gently.

"Um…" For once in her life, y/n seemed at a loss for words.

"Do you need the brain cell?" Mark smirked at her. This was an inside joke between them, a playful way of offering clarity when one of them was struggling to express themselves.

"Yes, please!" y/n giggled, the tension in her chest loosening slightly.

Mark reached to the side of his head, miming the act of pulling out an invisible brain cell, and placed it into the side of her head. "There you go, it’s yours now," he said with a slight smile.

y/n stayed silent for a moment before blurting out, "You know, Mark, I like you a lot."

"I like you a lot too, idiot. You’re one of the best friends I could ever ask for," he replied, smiling at her before turning his attention back to the game. He seemed to not understand the way y/n meant it, but that didn’t stop her from overthinking.

"Of course he only likes me as a friend. I’m so fucking stupid," she thought to herself. Growing increasingly upset, she shifted positions to sit on his bed instead of the bean bag with Mark. It took a moment for Mark to notice the shift in mood, but when he did, he turned to her and asked, "What’s your deal?" half expecting her to just be scrolling on her phone.

Y/n's eyes flashed with anger and hurt. "Your head is way too big for your body and it makes you look ridiculous and you’ll never be able to fix it," she snapped before storming out of his house.

Mark was left sitting there, controller in hand, staring at the door she had just slammed shut. He felt a mix of confusion and a sting of offense. What had just happened? He replayed the conversation in his mind, but nothing seemed to make sense.

He tried texting her multiple times, each message more desperate than the last. But no matter what he said, y/n never replied. He even went as far as stopping by her house only to be met with a sympathetic look from y/n’s mom, stating she wasn’t home. Days turned into weeks, and Mark was left wondering where he had gone wrong. Summer had slipped away into a moment of time as they both got caught up in their new lives at college, but the unresolved feelings and misunderstandings lingered, a silent echo of what could have been.

introduction 2/2… mark’s bffs

mark… spends most of his time in his parents basement composing beats. will occasionally make guest appearances at parties donghyuck drags him to. he tends to say the wrong things at the wrong time, despite this he’s very popular with girls when he brings his guitar with him to said parties.

donghyuck… has a podcast he makes his friends guest star on. tends to yap his way into problems (or out of them). somehow knows a LOT of people.

jeno… seems intimidating but actually the literal opposite. hangs around the skate park with jaemin and chenle in his free time. gets bitches bc he can skate.

jaemin… very extremely friendly, hes the most popular in the friend group. tags along with jeno to the skate park with his scooter. cat cafe frequenter.

chenle… knows everyone’s business. that’s why his hair is so big it’s full of secrets. likes to brag that his family owns property in calabasas. WILL make fun of jaemin’s scooter but he doesn’t get far because he brings heelies.

y/n… likes to play up being a hot dj then shows up to parties with mashups like i love it by kanye west x stayin alive by beegees. she’s very dramatic and stubborn; fabricates things because she’s bored. jobless but its ok she’s just a girl.

chaeyoung… a free soul you could say. you can never pin her down but she’s never actually busy just never in one place for too long. met y/n at a party and just kinda tags along with the friend group here and there.

ningning… the backbone of the friend group. well known/liked around campus and gets y/n most of her party gigs. loves gossiping w renjun and y/n. secret fortnite addict.

jisung… y/n’s next door neighbor. him ning and y/n started playing fortnite together last summer and have been inseparable since. trash talks 10 yr olds on fort (got put in fortnite jail for 3 days and he went through withdrawals).

renjun… self proclaimed hater but is scared of confrontation. most introverted out of the bunch but belongs to the streets at heart. one of those introverts that won’t order for themselves but if their friend asks them they’ll do it in a heartbeat.
