“Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you’ve just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, walking down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can – I’m surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head on it. You make me SICK.” Lily Evans, HP5

I saw a sad facebook post from the gay bookstore back in Ann Arbor where I used to live about how they hadn’t sold any books that day so I went on their online store and bought a couple, and while you don’t get #deals like elsewhere online, I’d love it if y’all would consider buying your next gay book from them instead of like, Amazon.

I’ve bought so many LGBTQIA+ books this week…or at least books that claim to have lgbt characters and I can’t wait to get into them.

The 100 Nights of Hero by Isabel Greenberg I recently picked up The 100 Nights of Hero after seeing it highly recommended around the internet and pretty much instantly fell in love with it. The 100 Nights of Hero is a graphic novel about what happens when a woman’s husband places a bet with a friend that he won’t be able to seduce his wife while he is away. This is not something the wife, Cherry, wants to happen, especially since she is in love with her maid, Hero. To prevent the husband’s friend from forcing himself on Cherry she and Hero come up with a plan to tell him a story every night to distract him, a la 1,000 Nights. I was captivated by both the story telling and artwork of Isabel Greenberg. The artwork was simple and in black and white, but was still beautifully done in a way that supported the story. While reading I felt like I was reading an entirely new fairy tale while noticing the nods and homages to well known fairy tales. Something I really appreciated as a lover of fairy tales. The 100 Nights of Hero also had a completely enchanting underlying theme of loving and praising women which leaves you feeling very empowered when you finish the book. I would highly recommend The 100 Nights of Hero, it is a captivating and engrossing read, that is also fairly short if you are looking for a quick read. It’s by far the best graphic novel I have read in a long time and I’m sure is going to become a lifetime favorite of mine. Rating: 5/5 stars

Books About Queer Ladies I Wish to Read in the Near Future
I’ve just somewhat recently started to read some books featuring queer ladies as the main characters and am, unsurprisingly, loving it. So of course naturally I’ve been looking for more and more books about lesbians to read and below is a short list of a few books that have caught my eye lately. Of course there are more books out there about lesbians that I can read so this list isn’t supposed to be extensive. If you have any suggestions for books to read I’m all for it!
The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera
The Tiger’s Daughter is the book that I’m currently reading (though I’m only a chapter in) and I find the premise super intriguing and awesome. The Tiger’s Daughter is the start of a fantasy series and is about a two warrior women, one who becomes the empress of the kingdom, and the other one is her general I believe. And they fall in love, which I am all for! The world is based on I think Chinese and Mongolian history, though it does not take place in our world, which I think will be really cool if done well. I’ll definitely give updates the farther I get into the book.
Oranges are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson
I have a feeling that Oranges are Not the Only Fruit is going to be one of those really emotional books that will also be really important. The book is a semi-autobiographical story about a girl growing up in a strict religious household, while also coming to terms with her sexuality as she grows up. This one I think is going to be the most hard hitting of all the books that I have on the list, but I think it will be a book that will cause me to really think about things in the world. And probably cry a few times.
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters
I think Fingersmith is the book that I am most excited about to read on this list. Mostly because 1) I’ve already read Tippig the Velvet by Sarah Waters and loved it 2) the movie The Handmaiden is based on this book and The Handmaiden was my favorite movie I saw last year. Fingersmith takes place in Victorian England and is about a girl who becomes a servant in the house of a rich woman as the part of a huge scheme to rob the rich woman. It’s fun it’s anything like the movie, I’m going to love it. I’m also very interested in seeing the change from Japanese occupied Korea to Victorian England. I’m so excited for this book honestly.
Orlando by Virginia Woolf
Technically this book is more of a story about a gender neutral character, or at least that’s what the synopsis sounds like on goodreads, but I am very excited to read it. Orlando follows a person who is reborn several times throughout the centuries and every time they are reborn they are a different gender. This book was written in the 1920s and is considered a really revolutionary piece of fiction, and I’m personally excited to see what it’s going to be like. It’s also going to be my first Virginia Woolf book, so if I end up loving it I’ll definitely check out her other works.

“Lesbianism is at the top of the agenda for my books because it’s at the top of the agenda for my life. It would be bizarre not to write about it.”
