The way Nasu handles magic and Mage society generally is fascinating to me. Mage families basically being aristocrats whose members almost seem to view everything in the abstract and cause immense suffering through all of their experiments and attempts to gain more power or to extend their lives. Viewing their children as pawns to continue the family lineage or even experiment with. The way we see the consequences of this "mage culture" through the characters of Rin, Sakura, and Illya. Rin attempting to maintain this cold and calculating mindset because that's what's expected of her and her father left behind this weighty legacy that she feels she must uphold. Sakura suffering abuse from Zouken who views her as merely a vessel for the grail and from her extremely jealous brother. The fact that Sakura was only adopted by the Matous because of their father, who was thinking mostly of lineages and family alliances, and either didn't realize or simply didn't care about the hell he was sending his little daughter into. The fact that this act drove a giant wedge in the relationship between Rin and Sakura, one which they were only able to mend at the end of Heaven's Feel. Meanwhile you have Illya being experimented with and turned into a vessel for the grail much like Sakura was. And she, as a homunculus, is basically just set up to have ultra powerful magic circuits to help them win the war but ultimately Illya herself probably wouldn't have lived very long even if she had survived the war since homunculi have short life spans. Not to mention she was basically groomed to hate her own family.
Fate/Zero did some interesting stuff with this concept too. Like we see more of Tokiomi and the shit the Einzburns got up to in the previous war. Kariya especially was always interesting to me, because you have this guy who hated mages and wanted to leave it behind. And he did for a time, but joined the war anyway for the sake of Sakura and Rin; two children who aren't even his own, but he at least has an idea of what awaits Sakura if he doesn't do something. Admittedly there's some weird friendzone shit he has with Tokiomi's wife, but I do think his desire to save this child from Zouken was genuine. And even for people outside these families, Waver Velvet has to deal with classism since he's not part of an established family.
There's just this interesting element of like, class, elitism and patriarchy. Mages are really similar to the old nobility in many ways, except even more exaggerated in their vanity and lack of empathy. It's like Nasu added a twist to the classic fantasy image of a wizard in his tower. The mages are in an ivory tower and don't understand the suffering caused by their little magic experiments, or if they do understand, they simply don't care. Just a complete disconnect.
#Nasu had no damn right going SO in depth about EVERYTHING in the original VN seriously#he had no business going into so much detail for his story about fucked up people in fucked up situations but he did and we're glad he did#tbh Fate in general is about people being crushed by the system they're in#the mage kids are used as pawns and test subjects for their lineages and thrown into this war#the Servants are lured in with the promise of a miracle only to be sacrificed to summon the Grail#we all know what happens to Archer#and here we have Shirou#whose arc is/needs to be breaking himself and the people around him out of those cycles#fateposting#fate series#fate/stay night#fate zero

going back to the time where i used to care about evillious since i finally found the red cat easter track but the duel of merrigod plateau is just the funniest and most intense family reunion i’ve ever seen. two dragon gods reincarnated as the sister in-law of an evil red cat who was their daughter in a previous life with her delusional demon daughter also from a previous life, and then the cannibal milf herself who now owns custody of the demon daughter’s adoptive kids said “fuck it, you’re getting vored”
#idk that much about the lore and i'm fucking crying#wtf does any of this mean#why is this series like this#evillious chronicles

is this what it was like in 9/11. trying to reason with people whose entire concept of human decency flies out the window when presented with the possibility of causing the smallest amount of harm to a "terrorist", no collateral damage is too large, no civilian too innocent, no connection too murky for people to deserve to die or be permanently crippled. people citing world war two urban warfare statistics to try to make a bad situation seem less worse and not balking at how fascist they sound

Seems like all the things people say are "missing the point" or "not doing enough" about saving pollinators, actually are doing some good.
Like No Mow May and leaving your lawn weeds alone, sure it's important to be planting species native to your area, but cosmopolitan lawn weeds like dandelions are actually really important for pollinators even in areas where they're not native. Gas powered lawn mowers put out a shit ton of CO2, way more per hour of use than cars, and the other air pollutants caused by lawn mowers are bad for us, so it's great to cut down on lawn mowing any way possible.
And on top of all that, a month of not mowing gives enough time for wild flowers to start growing where they couldn't before, so if you participate in no mow may, you might not NEED to plant native flowers because you might already have them
same thing with "save the bees" and focusing on honeybees, the pesticides that are affecting honeybees are also killing our native pollinators, so it will benefit them all to stop spraying.
people getting into beekeeping is good, even though honey bees aren't the ones endangered, it shows people how they are in symbiosis with other life forms.
And I'm reading a book about beekeeping, cause dad wants to keep bees, and the book says if you keep bees you will have to talk to your neighbors about pesticides and how they will harm the bees. That is a benefit to the whole ecosystem if someone is educating the people around them about the harms of pesticides
On top of that, more people are experiencing firsthand that honey comes from bees and consequently, understanding that insects aren't just scary and bad, and when they see a bee maybe they won't feel threatened and want to destroy it but instead think "oh yeah that is my friend that gives me delectable treats"
It is recommended to offer your neighbors honey from your hives. If they put pesticides on their flowers, they will put poison in the honey they were promised, if they get any honey at all

⚠️F/SN UBW spoilers⚠️
In my opinion, the Shirou/Rin date works well because it’s these two people whose lives have been dictated by survivor’s guilt and magecraft, respectively, just having fun and acting like teens their age and it has a bit of a bumpy start but they eventually both enjoy it, only for it to be interrupted by Shirou’s feelings of unworthiness and the violence of the Grail War.
Saber also plays into this as well as her life was defined by her kinghood, so seeing the more human side of her is special.

Wait, Archer is Archer because of Shiro’s Kyudo background. And the reason Archer has yet to actually pull out a goddamn bow is because of what Mitsuzuri was saying about Shiro being able to get into the Kyudo Headspace without a bow!
“The arrow isn’t shot at the target, but at the mind of the shooter. Those who can’t face themselves, or those who can’t shoot oneself, won’t understand the mental space they need to find.”
Holy FUCK. FSN is good actually. It’s REALLY good.

Love that even if it's a Servant Swap AU, Caster and Ryuunosuke stay together bc these freaks are perfect for each other and no one else can be involved in wtf they have going on
Never knew I needed Gil and Waver as a duo until now lmfaooo. Zero Gil is my fav Gil but man, can't hurt for him to have someone to worry about in a not godawful way instead of corrupting Kirei and being horrible to Artoria
10/10 would read
So rereading fate/zero fics and just came up with super dumb servant swaps for the first war.
Basically Waver summons Gilgamesh…and Gilgamesh looks at tiny little human and is like ‘I have had Waver for less than a day but if anything happens to him i’m killing everyone here’
Just Gilgamesh looking at small angry human and being like ‘this is hilarious I like you, you can stay’
Iskander gets summoned by Kayneth…only still doesn’t like him and ends up still spending all his time around Waver because he’s interesting.
Gilgamesh coming back from buying wine: LEAVE MY MAGNUS ALONE MONGREL YOU HAVE YOUR OWN
Rider:Ah hello Archer what are you doing here?
Gilgamesh:I LIVE HERE LEAVE!
Iskander:Fine fine *picks up Waver and leaves*
Gilgamesh:PUT THE MAGNUS DOWN OR DIE *Gates of Babylon open*
Waver:…What even is my life?
Just overprotective Gilgamesh who has just adopted this small magnus, like showed up picked up waver and like ‘this is mine now’ and really doesn’t like that Rider keeps hanging around his magnus or that his magnus is getting a crush on said rider servant.
Diarmuid get’s summoned by Kairya and as soon as he finds out about Sakura is just like ‘….so forget the grail…we’re saving the kid’
Artoria is summoned by Tokiomi and is not fond of him…then finds out about Sakura and nopes out of his plans taking Rin with her.
Basically Diarmund and Artoria killing Zouken and then noping out of the grail war with Rin and Sakura.
Kiritsugu and Kirei summon assassin and berserker not sure which summons which (So either horde of assassins or one op berserker super protective over Irisviel) The 2 of them end up fighting of course the other servants and Magnus see and are like ‘yeah fuck that’ and just leave them to it.
Caster and Ryuunosuke are still being the worst and everyone teams up to kill them (sort of Rider goes and Kayneth can’t stop him because he only has so many command seals and he wasted them very quickly, and Kirei and Kiritsugu are just trying to kill each other)
The grail war sort of falls apart but in the best way.
This is really dumb but made me laugh.
Edit: some wording…my brain does not function at 2am

Cheren and Bianca are very effectively designed narrative foils. In their BW art, Bianca is cheerfully and somewhat absentmindedly greeting the world, while Cheren is more closed off and contemplative. Their BW2 art showcases their growth, with Cheren looking more open, vulnerable, and earnest than in the past, whereas Bianca looks more capable and comfortable with herself as she embraces the life she wants rather than the one her parents dictated. What I find so effective is that the details of their BW2 designs draw from each other's BW designs, demonstrating their mirrored arcs and their influence on each other.
The thing itching at my brain right now is their color schemes. The shade of blue he wears is directly opposite her shade of orange on the color wheel. Her shade of green and his shade of red admittedly aren't literal complementary colors, but they still complement each other quite well. But while her hair is blonde, Cheren's ranges from a very dark blue to black.
But hm, what's this?
His eyes are close to purple! In fact, this color is directly opposite her hair color. True childhood friends complete the color wheel together.
In BW2, though... He loses his red glasses while she gains a pair, and his tie clip is green, one of her colors. Red has many strong/passionate associations, whereas green is often considered a more healing/soothing color. On top of that, his design has significantly less black than before and has more white, whereas hers has less white than before and gains some black. Other than the obvious title reference, this also feels notable due to his name meaning black while hers means white.
This is to say nothing of him growing his hair out to a similar length/shape as hers (with segments that point down where hers point up), making Lillipup his ace (with Lillipup being the first Pokémon Bianca caught in BW, whereas Cheren caught Purrloin, previously giving him more of a cat-like association and her more of a dog-like association), and taking on a more nurturing mode as a teacher. Whereas he used to be more judgmental, thanks to his growth during BW, he is now shown to have a friendly, encouraging presence toward younger trainers in particular, such as the BW2 MC and Hugh, which is a role that Bianca shares as well.
Meanwhile, as an aspiring Pokémon professor, Bianca has arguably become the cast's resident know-it-all and travels around doing research on legendary Pokémon, quite an ambitious undertaking. The fact that she's now the one wearing glasses fits their stereotypical association with nerdiness/intelligence. Despite deciding not to focus on battles, she still participates in the Pokémon World Tournament. In Pokémas, she gets more serious about battling, in part due to Cheren's encouragement.
All of this despite them not even seeing each other in person between games. Channeling their childhood friend through the ether. Truly they're on some other level.
Jokes aside, none of this comes out of nowhere! In BW, around Icirrus City, he references confiding in her off-screen about his doubts re: his own priorities, and in his endgame speech, he lists her even before Alder as someone who influenced his growth (though of course, Alder's influence is also extremely important, along with the MC and others). As for Bianca, in addition to being inspired by career women(/girls) like Juniper, Elesa, and Iris, she mentions in Pokemas that it stuck with her in BW when Cheren defined strength as the ability to help others. That's spinoff canon, obviously, but very cute!
Another cute spinoff canon detail: in the same Pokemas event, Cheren frequently references the idea of 'taking a new step,' something Bianca values, and he also talks positively about the changes in them both. This despite the fact that in BW2, he mentions he prefers when things stay the same.
For contrast's sake, I want to bring up how the characters are introduced at the very beginning of BW. Juniper says about Cheren: "He can be a little difficult, but he's a very honest person." And re: Bianca: "She's a little flighty, but she works very hard." These descriptions make it seem like Cheren will represent the game's theme of truth, while Bianca will represent ideals, which would make sense with their archetypes. However, Bianca is actually the one who represents truth (the truth of what she can do, the truths she wants to learn about Pokémon), and Cheren is the one who represents ideals (his ideal of using strength to help people, the ideals he passes along as a teacher). Their introductions set up how important role reversal becomes to this dynamic. This Pokemas official art demonstrates this beautifully as well, with their BW and BW2 poses mirroring each other.
Honestly, I could keep making roundabout points, or I could just post Pokemas dialogues where she's talking about trying to keep up a win streak as a Neo Champion while he's talking about how important it is to be friends with your Pokémon.
Speaking of Pokemas, it's also worth mentioning that Bianca talks about how affirming it was to realize that she's her own person, with her own strengths and interests, and doesn't need to compare herself to her friends. <3 And again, these two meet many other people who impact their separate journeys. This is all more to say that as they go through their parallel coming-of-age stories, their influence on each other is so acute that they literally wear it on their sleeves.
So, do I have a point? Well. Mostly just that this, too, is yuri.
#pokemon#unova#rival bianca#rival cheren#been playing the game and I loved them from the first time I saw them ngl
