Yeah, this blog is kinda dead.

I haven’t logged onto this account into over a year and I’ve started transitioning on to new projects. In particular, my youtube channel Mireille Prismparadise, which is an archive channel for many rare magical girl-related dubs from across the world. I do have some scripts in the works adapting a lot of the stuff I wrote about here into videos, and hopefully I’ll be able to start on that soon! I still put a lot of work into the other things on the channel too, I had to find ways to watch and record Albanian and Greek TV to get their currently airing PreCure dubs which was a trip. Check it out if you’re interested. My first lost dub-related video is currently slated to be released around December 18th to coincide with the 5th anniversary of Glitter Force, but it may get delayed a bit because of conflicts with my work schedule.

Toei Animation’s Pretty Cure licencing trailers (2005) 

Shortly after Pretty Cure’s initial release, Toei was eager to get it licensed to the rest of the world. Part of their method to do it was by launching prettycure.tv, which was a site designed just for licencors (though now only available via internet wayback machine). When the show aired in Germany, the promos were initially in English, and though are no longer accessible, people currently believe these may have been part of the trailers. There are also reports it was recorded in Los Angeles, with the voices possibly being Jennifer Sekiguchi (Stephanie Sheh) as Cure White and Deanna Morris as Cure Black. 

There is a possibility that the infamous Toei Europe trailer could be one of the trailers, but it’s currently unconfirmed. 

Additionally, Toei screened English dubbed versions of episodes 30 and 31 during Anime Expo 2007. It is unknown if these were specially dubbed for this event, or if these were from the South East Asian dub (the Canadian dub did not exist at this time)

Hey guys, now I haven’t updated in ages, but the well went kinda dry (I have discovered a few more possible topics for posts recently though)

This is kinda old news, but... The Yes! Pretty Cure 5 dub is confirmed to exist! 

Only as a pilot, though. They probably only dubbed one or two episodes to show to potential licencors, but nobody picked it up (as these stories usually go). If we get into contact with William Winckler, we could possibly get some more information, but his website is down and I can’t find an email address anywhere. He is active on Facebook, so if anybody wants to try that go ahead. I don’t really know how likely a release would be, because he would most likely need to talk to Toei about it. 

Some of you may have also seen Winckler’s new dub of PriPara (or Prism Paradise, as they call it now). Right now it’s on a similar situation, as they are looking of licencors. Hopefully, somebody bites, since the climate for girl-targeted shows has changed since then, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Okay so in 1995 Magic Knight Rayearth was going to have an Americanized dub with name changes done by Ocean Group, and was pitched to Fox Kids, but they rejected it and it was never picked up.

The original 1995 Ocean dub pitch pilot was thought to have been “lost forever” but someone managed to find and upload the theme song (!!!)

You can say what you want about Sandy Fox’s off-key performance of “Unyielding Wish” in the Media Blasters dub, but it’s certainly better than… this.

South East Asian English dubs

Normally, dubs that air in South East Asia are very hard to find. I’ve definitely noticed this in my research. I made a post mentioning Pretty Cure’s Asian dub and just talked about Sugar Sugar Rune, but there are a couple more I’ve found that there is barely any info on. 

If anybody can give me any more information it would be very appreciated. 

All the following dubs were done by Omni Productions.

Onegai My Melody/My Melody’s Magical Adventure (?)

Yes, I already made a post about this. But, I just found new info on it. I’m not sure if it really is My Melody’s Magical Adventures, but the information syncs up. My Melody’s Magical Adventure aired on a “mysterious Asian Cartoon Network” and ANN says this aired on Cartoon Network Philippines. There is also a cast list.

This has the least info. It says this also aired on Cartoon Network Philippines and it also Viz Media Europe was a distributor on ANN (This is confusing to me though because there is no wear saying the English dub was in Europe, unless the European dubs were based on this dub). There were a few voices listed but they didn’t say which characters they played. Andrea Kwan is in this one again, she’s in all of these I swear. 

Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san/Princess Comet (?)

Okay, I’m not really sure if this is lost because I swear I watched it on youtube years ago (I can’t find it anymore though of course). This one aired on Animax Asia. There was only 1 voice listed for this. Can you guess who played Comet? It’s Andrea Kwan again.

Sugar Sugar Rune (Cartoon Network Philippines/Omni Productions) 

(I should probably say this isn’t just dubs that never came out, I’m also talking about dubs that are impossible to find, in case you’re confused.)

This is something I just found out about today. There was a english dub of Sugar Sugar Rune that aired in the Philippines. Other than that, I have only been able to find voices. Chocolat was voiced by Andrea Kwan (You may know her as the voice of Sakura Kinomoto in the newly released Cardcaptor Sakura dub, that aired on Animax Asian years before it was released here) and Duke was voiced by Michael Pizzuto. There are also a few voice actors listed that aren’t credited to any characters. 

On a side note: After finding this, I just found several more magical girl dubs that aired in South East Asia with dubs that are impossible to find and have 0 info with them. Including this, I’ve found what could be info on My Melody’s Magical Adventure. I might make another post just listing all of these because most of them would make really short posts if I posted them individually.

Hey, remember the link to the opening clip in my MMPPP post? It had an annotation that says “click here for higher quality” but that annotation wasn’t working. This is probably what it linked too, because this is the highest quality clip I’ve seen of the MMPPP dub so far.

One of the few remnants of the Mermaid Melody English Dub that was never released. The Castillian Spanish dubbers used the English version of the opening for a commercial.

The lost dubs of Pretty Cure

For over 10 years, PreCure has had many chances at an international release. None of them seem to work out that well. The only season to get a known English dub was Futari Wa Pretty Cure, which aired on Canada’s YTV and UK’s Popgirl. We’ve already talked about William Winckler Prod.’s possible attempt on Yes! Pretty Cure 5. So, let’s look at some other dubs we never saw. 

4kids Entertainment (2006)

That’s right, Big Daddy 4kids once had rights to Pretty Cure. But... they did nothing with it before it was handed off to Ocean Production’s Blue Water studios in 2009, which lead to the dub we already know.  

Odex (2006?)

I can hardly find anything on this one. The Odex dub aired in Singapore. The only confirmed season that was dubbed Futari Wa. I’ve heard one place say Max Heart was going to be dubbed, but no where saying if it did or not. Apparently the voice acting is really bad. (From what I learned about Odex this seems to be the case with a lot of their dubs, here is an example from their Yu-Gi-Oh dub.) Hopefully, some day this dub will surface cause I’d love to experience it. 

Hopes for the future

There is rumored to be a Pretty Cure dub in the works by Saban Brands. There has been no official conformation on this, but it’s going under the title of Glitter Force. Hopefully, it won’t be in the pile of dubs that never happened.

My Melody’s Magical Adventure (Cartoon Network- Mid-Late 2000′s) 

Onegai My Melody was an anime based off of the Sanrio character, My Melody. It aired on an unknown Asian Cartoon Network. There used to be a clip on youtube, but it was taken down. It might have been planned to air in the United Kingdom as well, but it never happened.  An Italian distributor known as Mediaset owns rights to some episodes.

Yes! Pretty Cure 5 (William Winckler Productions- 2011?)

In 2011, news surfaced that William Winckler Productions was making a dub of Yes! Pretty Cure 5. Not that much info can be found, but there is a list of dub names and voices. 

Priscilla/Cure Dream (Nozomi Yumehara) - Merieve Herington

Lynn/Cure Rouge (Rin Natsuki)- Larua Siegel

Erica/Cure Lemonade (Urara Kasugano) - Alexa Kahn

Kimberly/Cure Mint (Komachi Akimoto) - Aurelia Scheppers

Karen/Cure Aqua (Karen Minatsuki) - Beth Ann Sweezer

Coco - Bryan Forrest

Nutts - Bradford Hill

Many people say this was just a test dub. I did read some where that this was a dub released in Japan to help people learn English which would be a little bizarre (IMDb does say this was released in Japan, so it can be backed up a little bit. 

I personally believe it’s possible this dub might be found one day. It seems William Winckler Productions has a lot of dubs that are really hard to find. They also seem to mainly do compilation films, so if this is found, it probably don’t be a full series.

Magical Doremi (Cloverway- 2000)

“Wait, didn’t 4kids dub Doremi?” Yes, they did. But, way before 4kids got the license, there was plans for a dub by Cloverway. They were the same company that made the first English dubs of Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS. 

In 2000, an article by Bandai stated that they were going to collaborate with Mattel with toys to release in early 2001 in North America. 

There also has been claims that a dub aired in Australia in 1999/2000. Some people claim to have seen it and a Kidsceen article from 1999 also says that it aired on the Australian channel ABC TV. This couldn’t have been the 4kids dub, because 4kids didn’t own any rights until 2005. 

With so little information on this dub, it’s unconfirmed if it actually existed or was scrapped in the planning stage.

The Magical World of Gigi/Fairy Princess Minky Momo (Harmony Gold-1984)

Something a little different, a dub that USED to be lost, up until recently.

Harmony Gold got the rights to Minky Momo in September 1984. They dubbed 52 episodes and an OVA (Minky Momo: La Ronde in my Dream). The OVA was released on VHS in the USA as Gigi and the Fountain of Youth. Sometimes, it was just called The Magical Princess Gigi (above). 

But, for years, nobody knew what happened to the full series. There were reports of it airing in Australia and Malaysia. There was also reports of it showing up in Israel.  There was no copies of episodes, and it seemed like this dub would never see the light of day...

Let’s cut to March 2015. William Winckler Productions and Production Reed (animation studio who made Minky Momo) announced they would release compilation films of Minky Momo on Amazon instant video (I haven’t watched them, but if you want, they cost around $15 USD each). These compilation films were made from Harmony Gold’s dub, despite being branded on Amazon as Minky Momo. They say she is called also Gigi in one description and from what I’ve read they only call her Gigi in the video.  

But, after 30 years of being almost untraceable, this dub was finally given a proper release.

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch (ADV Films- 2004)

ADV got the rights to Mermaid Melody in June 2004, for release in North America. There was also planned to be merchandise. ADV was able to dub the entire series. But, no channel wanted to air it and because of that, they had to drop the series. The dub is currently being held by TV Aichi, who originally produced and aired Mermaid Melody. Nobody knows if TV Aichi will ever release it.

Not much is know about the actual dub. All we have is the trailer (above) and a small clip of the opening. 

Fun facts: the French dub of Mermaid Melody and the Spanish dub were actually based of this unreleased dub.

Remember when you were younger, and you watched cool cartoons about girls who used magic powers. It was all thanks to those dubbing companies that brought those animes right to you! 

Though, magical girl dubs normally aren’t treated with the same respect as most dubs. Whether it be 4kids or some Canadian company, they normally aren’t very good. But, sometimes they get so little credit that they aren’t even released! 

This blog is dedicated to all those magical girl anime that over the years could have been released to young minds everywhere, but ended up being lost due to many reasons. Will these dubs ever be found? Nobody knows, but for now we’ll remember what they could have been...
