i know Erik is always on his usual anti-human bullshit as usual, but has anyone ever sat him down and been like "a mutant killed your powerless human mother. Maybe you're fighting the wrong side, dear"
Like, in first class his whole beef is with Shaw, the mutant. And yet he's arguing every minute with Charles about humans being awful.
#thank you!#regardless of how much sense erik always makes#his life was shaped by the holocaust#and charles is genuinely infuriating sometimes#waiting for the day people stop being surprised when traumatized people whos needs are not being met turn violent and irrational

The amount of time it took me to realize that being very comfortable admitting that my language, affects, mannerisms, morals, etc. etc. as a <10 was almost all derivative of media instead of people I actually knew, so I really never should have been surprised that even as a self serious, 'down to earth' person, *yeah* I introject.
The splitting of introjects
So I was talking to a friend about why people split introjects, and potentially why they split a lot, and why this is especially seen in younger systems, like young Gen Z and older Gen Alpha. I'm solidly Gen Z and I've seen this apply to people my age, but not as much.
So we'll start with most introjects are of abusers and caretakers. Which holds true, but in this case I'm going to solely talk about the introjection of fictional characters.
So in modern times we have a lot more access to media, especially television. Nowadays children who face neglect are being raised by the media instead. This is far more seen with the existence of iPad babies, which is a newer phenomenon, but isn't exactly original to Gen Alpha. Before we had iPad babies we had children raised by the television. These kids watched a lot of children's tv and whatever their parents were watching. For a lot of these kids their access to media was never restricted because they were being neglected.
My age group got early access to the unfiltered internet, which has only gotten worse, but for me it was the around beginning of educating on internet safety. So I got completely unfiltered access with no monitoring.
Basically this age group is surrounded by media 24/7, especially quick paced media. My age group was around before tiktok, instagram, and snapchat, and many of us didn't gain access to these until our teen years. So instead we turned to books and television.
Neglect tends to be accompanied by other forms of trauma. So these neglected children with unfiltered access to the internet have their only escape being media, and they could find any media they want. They can pirate books or buy ebooks, they can watch any tv show they want, join any social media platform, and their parents won't care.
A lot of these children turned to television and youtube.
So now how does this relate to introjects?
Well now that they have access to this media and have less access to reality when these children split they're more likely to source it from the media then people they know in real life.
What do I mean by source?
I don't literally mean full introjects who are exact copies of their source. I mean that now they take appearances, names, and characteristics. These children are finding themselves in media instead of the real world. Maybe this neglect or abuse causes them to have limited access to the real world in general. Trauma is isolating and a lot of these kids may experience bullying or have a lack of friends due to the trauma. They've turned to this fictional media instead.
Introjecting is a normal thing that all teenagers do as they find an identity. Before media they introjected aspects of their friends, say they started using slang a friend used or developing interests in things their friends are interested. But now they have this access to media they can do that to fictional characters as well.
Trans people name themselves after fictional characters all the time, and the same can apply for alters. You can want to look like your favorite character, so can alters. You may change your personality to resemble a fictional character more because you're attached to them. This happens all the time and anything that can happen to a singlet can happen to an alter.
What does this have to do with splitting?
Well the DID community has an interesting definition of introject. Introjects are seen as alters sourced from a media. A lot of people define introjected parts based on how they are "sourced" to said media, rather than the medical definition of introjected parts. This leads to a lot more introjects in a system because of how they define it, rather than what introjects truly are. Introjects have taken the meaning of an alter related to a media in some way. So this is what caused "introject heavy" systems.
What are some examples?
So I have what I refer to as "introjected parts" rather than full introjects. These are sourced from characters I related to as a child while I was being neglected. I didn't have access to the internet at the time because this was before social media being what it is now. This was before iPhones. All I had was music and hand me down books. So a lot of Nancy Drew and Babysitters Club.
I saw the characters in these medias and I thought "I wish I had these characteristics because of xyz." For example Nancy was smart and was able to solve all of these mysteries, she didn't let anything stop her. I thought maybe I could be like that. If I was smart no matter what and didn't let anything get in my way my family would take me more seriously and I would stop being seen as "stupid" from what I've since learned was caused by my autism. George was herself no matter what, even when other people judged her for being a "tomboy." I was a tomboy as a kid (which I've since learned was actually i was trans) and I wanted to not care about judgement from other people, maybe if I was more like her people wouldn't judge me. I saw myself more in Karen than I did Kristy because Karen had divorced parents but she learned to cope with it and she had a family who cared about her and she was able to go between houses. I thought maybe if I was like Karen maybe I'd have an easier time when I switched between households.
I split introjects of these characters due to my only access to interaction being through media. I wanted to be more like these characters because they had characteristics I wanted.
Because that's how I started with coping that coping mechanism didn't go away and I kept coping using media. I read a lot in high school and when I split introjects it wasn't because I liked the character, I have quite a few introjects of characters I hated, but it was because they had some characteristic I wish I had. For example one of my introjected parts has traits of a character with similar trauma to me who never let her trauma get the best of her, she found a way to bounce back and didn't let it consume her, she let it fuel her instead. I wanted to be like that. I didn't want to be consumed by my trauma. I wanted to be strong despite it all, and so just like child me did I ended up with an introject of said character. Who is now a protector because if she can do it, so can I.
I say introjected parts because I don't agree with how the system community sees introjects as being literally their source. She is not her source. She has aspects of a fictional character based on the characteristics I wish I had.
Just like how when I started socially transitioning and took on the name of a character I related to, she did the same as an alter. She ended up with the same name and a similar appearance, which is kinda like how for a while I wanted to look like a fictional character cause I liked how he looked and thought people would see more as more masculine if I looked like that.
Introjected parts are far more than their source and why they split is important. It's not based on liking the character. It's based on what traits the character may have. It's based on what you see in them. Do you see your abuser in them? Maybe you'll split them because of that. Do you see aspects of your caretakers (like family, mentors, or teachers) in them? Maybe you'll split them because of that. Do you see characteristics that you think would've changed your life for the better in them? Maybe you'll split them because of that.
Introjects aren't their source. They are not copies of media. They are based upon characteristics that matter to you. Either because you wish you had them because it would've changed your trauma.
A great example of this is the Batman one. You introjected Batman as a kid cause if Batman was real he'd protect you and so now he's a protector in the system.
Just like this you can introject a character based on any characteristic you think would have protected you, changed things, make you someone you wish you were, etc.
Again most introjects are of abusers or caretakers, and not fictional, but these are some reasons why we've seen an uptick in fictional introjects.
TLDR: Children are more neglected and raised by media nowadays. Introject has changed meaning in the system community. Introjecting is a normal behavior. And introjecting isn't based on liking a character but wanting their characteristics.
#my brain is like hey#instead of processing your own trauma what if you process someone elses#and maybe if youre good you can know what that means#cdd system#commentary#cdd#resources
