Dummy commentary on:
East Palace, West Palace
- Zhang Yuan (1996)
Okay, so first of all, the intro scene felt creepy. What was supposed to be a palace looks dilapidated. The pond or whatever you call it was so drained of water, although not totally dry, seemed so ugly and sad and dirty. So yeah I was creeped out from the very first seconds. I also already caught a glimpse of the synopsis before playing the movie so I know it has gay characters in it.
The movie goes on and damn it's so heavy. He deserved a much better world. Towards the end, he fell in love with the policeman and I was literally screaming at him NO NO LOVE IS KIND DUDE HE IS NOT KIND HE'S SO MEAN TO YOU please you deserve someone kind :<.
The police officer actually giving in and having an intense gay panic moment, is really the same as how the most homophobic people are actually self-projecting. Because why does it matter to you what sexual orientation a person has? I was so pissed.
I know there was a lot of symbolism in there. Especially the thief and guard, prisoner and executioner trope. Also, the part where he was married and when he was asked how he got married he mentioned this girl back in high school. I think that girl is him. Or like, the girl was real but he could see himself in the girl. Confusing for me but I think I understand it enough to conclude that the random stories of the girl and the outcast is just to further emphasize how lonely his situation was as a gay man in that time in history.
By the way, I was confused about his mother "breastfeeding" him despite looking so grown a kid already. Like? What? there's nothing in there anymore I can assure you. So why? Then, what's more confusing for me is the part where he said he "had a vision". What was the vision he had while breastfeeding on his mother at like older than 5 years old? So yeah I don't get it.
The canteen man was so fucking annoying I swear. After nutting you just beat him up? Fuck you. The actor to play that part of the man was the same as the policeman so yeah I noticed that. Sheehs. I believe that meant something I just don't get it.
Okay for some unserious reactions on some scenes. In the part where he tells a story about a handsome teacher. Where he stripped down and crawled inside a bed with a mosquito net. That was so so so... I don't know. Hot? Ignoring the trope of course since it was a student-teacher thing. The bed is so close to home for me because we prepare our bed like that. The bed was caged in a mosquito net to keep the mosquitoes out, of course. Then, the part where he was butt-naked and the teacher was caressing him. !!!. It was a little bit too sensual for me to stay serious in that scene. Sorry. I was screaming half out of cringe.
But from all that stories of all his sexual rendezvous, I think it was just to show how there exist these men who are also into men but are closeted or are in denial yet they are homophobic as fuck. I swear I was so angry. They just nut and then go back to being the vile humans they are. Like, the denial, the repression. Pissing me off so bad.
All in all, I love the shots. I don't know the technical terms to describe or judge this aspect in films. But I just want to say everything is good. The angles all felt and looked right to me. Also, gayness is natural. Heterosexuality is natural and, most importantly, harmless. So, I really hope the world finally reaches the point where we make the world a safer and kinder place. For the world to be finally fully normal.
So yeah this is my dummy commentary for this Movie.

Dummy Commentary on:
In The Mood For Love
- Wong Kar-Wai (2000)
Nice... Haha.
So, this is the first movie I watched on the app, okay. So, for my brain which is used to the current fast-paced and stimulating movies, the slow pace of this movie stuck out like a sore toe. Sore, really. Because I felt a very slight boredom. But it got better as I noticed the interesting patterns and stuff put in there. So, yeah. I just want to confess, first, this embarrassing flaw of mine. Huhu.
By the way, one reason why this is the movie I chose to watch first is that it is popular among cinephile accounts on Twitter. I always find screenshots and gifs from this movie. So, I thought, since I already have this subscription, why not watch all those highly hyped movies in cinephile twt so I can verify their glory as a common audience who is not very good in this type of creative field.
Now, for the things I noticed. I found it cool how the faces of the spouses of the two main characters were not shown. Well, I also think it is a way to really emphasize how those two shitheads are not important but these two lovely people are. The color scheme, which I see people online comment on often, is so nostalgic(?) and lovely and warm. I also really found it witty the way the reenactment scenes were shot. It caught me off guard three times. Especially the first one. The guy did the flirting first right and the way I shrieked 'cause like WHAT THE HELL SIR! T^T. Then revealed right away that they were just trying to guess how the cheating started. I actually had to pause the movie to laugh at myself.
Anyways, the end part where she said in the car that she didn't want to go home that night. I was confused because I didn't know if it was just another reenactment or if she actually wanted to say that. Now, assuming it is indeed true and they did the deed, who's child is that boy? Well, literally while typing the previous sentence, I realized that the kid can't be his if they did do the thing because when she acted stalker-ish a year later, she didn't look pregnant. But THAT IS NOT THE POINT OF THE MOVIE. So yeah, whatever. Sorry though.
So, I said earlier that I already saw posts of this movie online, right? Now, I was expecting they'd end up together. But man, THEY DID NOT? Imagine the happy life they could have had together, especially for having similar interests and matching sensibilities. I was surprised when I got to the end of the movie and was still shocked during the credits. Then I hurriedly used Google to search for that table scene where the couple were sitting at a dining table. The lady was napping on the table and the man was reading a small book. I always thought that was a screenshot from this movie. Turns out it's not. That screenshot is the very reason I was expecting they would still end up together. I finished the credits just to wait for that scene to pop up. But no. So yeah, they are really never getting together.
I noticed the story was set in a significant period in Taiwan because the state of the economy was mentioned several times, especially towards the end. But I know nothing about it. But I get it. I guess. I kind of sending a message how life really goes on for the smallest of us even in the most uncertain times in history. Same with the pandemic. I felt so down but recently when I looked back on it, I realized life still went on for everyone else, and how I wish I did just that too. I would never feel so bad about a lot of things. But the past is past so I can only apply this realization from this moment on.
This is all.

Hi! This is @losterthanlost 's side blog for the movies she watched during her 3 month promo subscription to this movie-streaming app.
I just want to make it clear that I am no cinephile or an expert. I am just an audience who have no idea about formal critiques or cinematography or even just the story-telling aspect of it. I am just a common consumer.
So I may say something "ignorant" or "normie"-coded that may piss off some of you experts in this field of interest. I am sorry in advance but also, kindly ignore. I just want to document my raw reactions to these movies I'll be watching for the 3 months my subscription is active. I'll never be 23 forever. I want something to look back on.
That's all. Haha.
