She studied Thomas with narrowed eyes. Persistent little fucker, she thought to herself. Outwardly, Lora huffed in exasperation. “You’re annoying,” she replied flatly before figuring that she should give a half-ass explanation. “A riddle is up to the riddler’s interpretation. Balance could be correct, but I don’t like that answer so it is incorrect.”
Thomas narrowed his eyes, leaning forward with his elbows on the table. “Fine then,” his tone was irritated, if a bit suspicious, “what’s the real answer? And don’t try to keep it from me. I’m not giving you any reward unless you tell me.”

Lora thought she had him. Never has she ever lost a bet or a game; she plays dirty because she likes to win. When Thomas answered correctly, it was the first time someone actually one-upped her.
“Incorrect,” she lied, though with an eerily calm face. She wouldn’t dare to admit a loss. “I’ll let you know about my reward when the time comes.”
Thomas leaned back in his chair, staring out the window and tapping his fingers on his arm in thought. He mumbled the lines beneath his breath, seemingly lost in his mind for a moment. At first he thought that the answer was indulgence; you used it when you spent, and when you ate to no end— but it wasn’t exactly sought by all, and with the second line it didn’t make any sense.
He wasn’t sure how long he’d spent thinking, but suddenly he looked back at Lora and a smirk pulled at the corners of his lips. “Balance?”

//Ten Years By//
Lora spends five more years at Barton Hollow until finally realizing that it was in her nature to be nomadic. She leaves, dropping everything and everyone she met and befriended, to find a life in a different town. This time she changes her name to Bethany Lancaster, pretending the place with the flying alligators never existed.
She tries harder to refrain from using her clairvoyant powers. When she left Barton her sanity was at an all-time low, practically gone, so in order to save herself from a trip to a psyche ward she realizes that she needs to stop. It is extremely strenuous on her and she begins to take non-prescription drugs from time-to-time to ease the edge of her curiosity. Sometimes, when she’s really anxious, she results to heroine.
After relocating a few times, Lora runs into her sister, Saleena. They act towards each other like strangers at first, but after a few months they mend their ties and continue to be in each other’s life and even move in together. She finds out, however, that her mother died by the hands of her father during the time she was in Barton and it sends Lora into another craze. It takes everything in Saleena to convince Lora not to go after him. Angry at her sister for leaving her mother to their deranged father, she cuts herself off from her entire family for good.
Presently, in the tenth year, Lora lives in Spain with a band of witch hippies that she somehow got involved with. Because her heroine use never became an addiction, she sobered up. The only “drugs” she uses are made by herself, which has bettered her mental state to the point where her visions no longer tamper with her.
Lora is still very dark and manipulative, but now completely numb to the world. She plans on leaving Spain and the hippies behind—sooner rather than later—and settling down somewhere in England, perhaps with an old man with lots of money.

A screech so loud it would put a Siren to shame echoed from Lora’s mouth as the water cascaded onto her. Her sanity slipping, she retreated from the pool’s edge and made her way over to the male to fist his hair tight in her grasp. “You’re done,” she snarled, ready to hex the living daylights out of his poor soul.
Jake watched her and then laughed, shaking his head. Why he wasted his time on people who were no fun, he didn’t know “Chicken.” he muttered, splashing a huge amount of water at her. If she would go in, the water could go to her, he’d make sure of that “None.”

A smirk played on Lora’s lips. “Wonderful,” she replied while her brain began piecing together a riddle--something she was quite good at and often used to freak out her clients during appointments. Clearing her throat, she started to recite one in an ominous tone.
“A natural state, I'm sought by all. Go without me, and you shall fall. You do me when you spend, and use me when you eat to no end.”
Lora leaned in closer and whispered, “What am I?”
Thomas stared across into Lora’s eyes as if he could discern whether or not to trust her by that alone. Maybe it was stupid to jump into this without knowing what the consequences might be— but then again that had always been Thomas’ style. “Deal.”

Lora tapped her chin in thought before deciding. “I’ll let you know what whenever I need it. Deal?”
“Alright,” Thomas said. He’d always preferred mind games to physical ones, and he considered himself quite good at riddles. “What do you get if I’m wrong?”

“A fun one, of course!” Lora exclaimed. “I say a riddle, and you answer it. If you answer correctly, you get my number. If not, I get something.”
Thomas narrowed his eyes in suspicion, resisting the urge to shift away from her. “What kind of game?”

Moving her coffee cup away from her body to be sure no future accidents would occur, Lora pondered over what was wrong with this man’s psyche.
“I hear ya, honestly,” she admitted, recalling all of the times she’s hit her head against her bedroom walls while in a vision’s trance. “Sometimes things become sort of,” the witch thought for the right word, “hazy, and I tend to lash out. It’s whatever. Shit happens.”
Eyeing up the man’s hands, she reached out for one to examine for herself.

Lora nodded in a manner to act as if she understood, but a butterfly had fluttered by at the same time the woman spoke, ultimately catching her attention. “Pretty,” she mumbled, lost in the colors floating through the air ever so gracefully. It soon was out of sight, leaving her to come back to reality.
For some time she stared at the girl next to her with a blank expression, remembering their conversation. Eventually Lora gave up with a shrug of her shoulders. “Have you ever tasted raw meat?” she asked, completely changing the subject.
Mornings...
There were always either one of two different reactions that Angela got whenever her job was mentioned and she was unsure which she disliked more—being judged and shunned for it, or being doted on as if there was anything appealing about having all eyes on your naked body. In the end, she supposed the latter was slightly better and nodded slightly to Lora, the edges of her lips curling up into a small smile. “Is it?” she questioned, just so she wouldn’t have to either confirm that she actually liked being on stage nor agree with her that it was rad, when it really wasn’t all that great.
Her facial expression shifted to one of slight confusion, however, whenever Lora whispered her question to her. “I’m not—I, um…well, I’m not really promiscuous, yeah,” she stated, though she wasn’t certain what Lora was implying at the same time. “It was just the job that was given to me so I kind of just…took it without asking for anything more.”

“Never mind that.” She scooted her chair closer to his with a sort of child-like excitement in her eyes. “Want to play a game?”
“I’d have to doubt everything else you say just to be safe.” He narrowed his eyes slightly, tilting his head to the side though keeping his expression somewhat playful.

Lora let out an aggravated grunt and said rather sharply, “I can imagine.” His pain was involuntary, obviously unable to control whatever occurred to him, whereas hers was completely her own fault; if she wasn’t so damn curious, her sanity would still be in tact. His was probably slipping at the seems just because his mind wouldn’t shut up.
Staring at his clenched hands made her roll her eyes. Another giant difference between them: this man fought his demons by inflicting pain, her visions forced her to cause herself pain. The whole situation was topsy-turvy. Grabbing napkins and wiping off her area of the table and her reddened hand, she almost decided on getting up and relocating to the group sitting across the way. There wasn’t any empty seats, but she figured if she “accidentally” kicked a leg out from one of the occupied chairs then perhaps they would get the picture and leave.
“You gotta stop that, it’s weird,” she eventually spoke out, indicating to his whitened knuckles. “I get you’re going through some shit but you’re going to end up messing with some nerves if you’re consistently doing that.”

“Yeah, sure,” Lora replied simply. She took long strides to hustle out of the woods, remaining silent for most of the walk until she suddenly stopped and looked around. For that moment, she couldn’t recall why she was there or who was standing next to her, causing great panic to hit her. Then reality came back--at least her perception of it--and the witch calmed, continuing her journey.
As they reached the edge of the wood, spotting the town in the distance, Lora ruffled her hair to make sure no insects tried nesting in the brown mane of straggly locks (she made a mental note to comb it later on, but as always she would forget). After finding no obvious inhabitants, she turned to the woman with the herbs.
“So, I’m guessing you own that Hoodoo Voodoo place,” she assumed, “which kind of makes sense now.” Lora had passed by a few times while wandering the streets at night--something she did since her and sleep never coincide--and would peek through the windows at the strange objects being sold, questioning what human would buy half of what was contained. A witch being the owner pieced the puzzle together.

She nodded again. No two witches were alike, and often enough their practices varied wildly compared to one another depending on their origins. “Should have killed it to finish off whatever you were doing,” she commented bluntly “Lest he come back with his brothers and torment you—the crows around here do that, you know. They’re Barton’s crows… they’ve grown strong to protect themselves against the alligators.”
With a curt, polite smile and raised eyebrows, Marilyn sighed. “Yes, I get the joke.” There was no judgment passed from her for the morbid joke, but being lied to hit a string of displeasure. It appeared to be the woman’s character, and there wasn’t much she could reasonably do about that.
“The woods at night are no hazard… at least not for me,” she said, eyes lingering on the dimming light on the ground. “I would follow you, but I’m afraid I have to get back to my shop so I can preserve—,” she lifted up her arms, bags of herb in hand “—all of these. They’re quick to dry this time of year…” Lips curling into a sweet smile, she took a few steps to catch up to Lora “I have to go back into town too—may I walk with you?”

“Physical contact is not needed, mommy’s boy,” Lora called over to him while chucking off her other boot and rolling up the pant legs of her jeans, “you shall stay there and I here.” She would refuse to go in, for the witch acquired a fear of submersion. Leaning back on her elbows, now with her legs dangling in the pool, she watched the male attentively. “So, how many steroids do you take to keep up that physique?”
Jake raised his brows, laughed at her words about what she thought he was. He didn’t even bother to argue with her. He wasn’t allowed to, or so his parents said, in order to keep up appearances. But he did it more out of fun, because every single person around him assumed something about it, something completely wrong “Jump then. Or do you need a push?”

“The flattery!” Lora exclaimed with a coy smile that turned a bit devious when an idea popped into her twisted mind. “What if I said that I lied again and I do indeed have a cellular device?”
"Yeah, yeah. I can surely survive endless rejection. At least I got to have coffee with you. Well— spill coffee.” He leaned back in his chair, relaxing his stiff posture slightly.

"Sort of figured you were a wittle mommy's boy," Lora cooed over to the naked male. At his proposition, she yawned. "Oh, sweetie, I know it doesn't. I've encountered many penises in my life." Lowering herself from the fence, she sauntered over to the other side of pool and took off a leather boot to test the water via her toes. She moaned slightly at the warmth, her eyes closing and seeming to be a state of utter bliss. They then popped open, extremely attentive, and narrowed on the man coaxing her. "I'm game."
Jake narrowed his eyes and tilted his head to the side, looking like he didn’t quite get the last part, but he did way too well, and a smile played at his lips. She had a dirty mind, he liked that “No, but it’ll be fun to see my mom’s face when she finds me here.” Jake shrugged, running a hand through his long and wet hair “Come on, seriously, join me. Even if i’m naked, you know, it doesn’t bite.”

Lora pouted at him and said sarcastically, "You survived rejection once. You can do it again. And, if I were to assume based on your track record, probably again."
"Damn," Thomas shook his head slightly, "that’s actually the second time that has happened to me. Though I suspect the first time was just so she get out of giving me her number."
