With a damp clothe, he wiped beads of cold sweat from her brow. Her skin still burned with the same feverish sickness for a week, though she had been drinking more and eating more, both signs of relief for Caleb. She shivered and her eyes opened, sunken with malaise meeting his worried gaze.
"Water?" He asked. She nodded licking her cracked lips. She had been in bed since coming home, propped up by pillows with the blanket pulled up the her shoulders. It wasn't uncommon for Tessa to be gone before the sun rises with a mutual understanding she'd be back before dusk. He felt no inclination to ask where she went, for their trust was strong. Every individual needed their own sphere of privacy, an idea that took Caleb some time to accept but now he truly understood. Not all stones needed be turned.
Holding the mug up to her lips, he watched her sip and patiently tipped the container as she drank. Using his sleeve, he dabbed her chin and thought about asking her where she had been. Was it a toxin or poison? An infection or sepsis? But she seemed content with resting in bed in his presence, requesting neither remedies nor tonics. He wished he could do more, having not felt this useless since giving up magic, illusions which made his headaches worse. He hated watching her be like this, so sick that she could barely get out of bed on her own. Her clammy black hair stuck to the side of her face as her eyes closed once more, her chest rising before falling to the sound of a soft sigh escaping her lips.
"Does she ever want kids?" He recalled his father asking some time ago before passing away. It is something Caleb thought about, as the years passed and his side burns turned grey, as his waist grew a little wider and his hairline a tad thinner. If it were a boy, Caleb hoped he wouldn't be as whiny as he was. But if it were a girl...no...absolutely not. It would be too much for him, to see the reflection of Briony and the others, twins, triplets, quadruplets, no...no...no... Everything has a beginning and an end, and what's in the past must stay buried in the past, memories and illusions separated from reality and the present. Shattered. Gone. Never to return.
Caleb felt a tug on his sleeves, snapping him from his thoughts as he looked down to see Tessa's slim fingers around his arm. Though she said nothing, he read her expression of curious concern. "It's nothing." He shook his head, an answer insufficient for the woman with a keen mind. She tugged on his arm again, eyes now focused like a cat peering into his own demanding the truth. It gave Caleb pause, though a faint smile eventually reached the edge of his cheeks as he weaved their fingers together and kissed the back of her palm. "I was just thinking about everything I have and what we've been through....my heart is full and I'm happy."
