Astrology, the Basics
“Wait, so i’m not just an Aries?!”
No, you’re not. In fact none of us are just one anything. So let’s dial it back to day we were born. The stars and planets in the sky aligned to convey a story completely unique to you, and thus your natal chart was born!
   Our Sun sign
Tumblr media
“Playboi, what’s a Sun Sign?”
Well, the Sun Sign is the sign everyone typically knows about themselves. It’s the sign you were born under that immediately correlates with your birthday. Meaning, “I was born in April so I’m a Taurus!” Your sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on the day of your birth. So what does the sun represent in astrology? Our vitality and ego, “who we are.” The thing about the Sun is we’re constantly growing into ourselves and our egos, constantly learning ourselves and strengths, so we’re constantly growing into our Suns. Many people write off astrology due to their inability to relate to their Sun signs when so much more goes into a person. Your Sun sign is less “who i am” and more so “who i’m becoming.” And sometimes we never fully become the poster child of our Sun signs because we grow at different rates and resonate with different things, not to mention the housing of the Sun plays a heavy role in how our “egos” will play out. Also aspects made to our Sun by other planets are most important as they shape our Sun’s characteristics, but that’s another post!
Our Moon Sign
Tumblr media
“…okay, so I understand Sun Signs now, but what’s a moon sign?”
The moon sign in astrology is of immense importance. This is where we feel most comfortable and secure and our primal emotional reactions. As I mentioned previously, the sun is “who we’re becoming’’ while the moon can be defined as “who we always are.” Unlike the Sun who illuminates everything, the moon is a softer, dimmer light. It lights up the dark sky at night and it does the same for our personal dark sky emotionally. Simply put, the moon is our emotions. Emotions can be simply irrational and erratic, so we suppress them because throwing a hissy fit in public is not that endearing. My point being that our moons can sometimes be overlooked by others as well as our selves because the attributes of our moons are highly subconscious at times. The moon is how we were nourished, and in turn how we nourish others. It’s an extremely sentimental and personal part of our being. It’s what makes us feel safe as well as habitual patterns we carry. A balanced moon is very important as an unbalanced one can take a toll on us physically. When the needs our moon requires aren’t met, we can start to display it’s negative attributes and fall into a bit of a depression, eat less, and never leave your bed. Or perhaps become more aggressive and angry depending on your moon sign. It’s also equally important to understand that others around us have different moon placements then us natally. Everyone requires different things to feel emotionally secure, sometimes we’re harder on others because their love languages differ from our own.
   Our Mercury Sign
Tumblr media
“What does Mercury have to do with anything?”
Well, everything. Mercury rules over the mind, how we think, how fast we think, how we learn, our speech, and even our style of writing. He’s the fastest moving planet in the solar system so it’s fitting that he rules the nervous system. The poor guy gets glossed over a lot until he turns retrograde and everyone starts running around like chickens missing their heads because that’s when we notice most how strong Mercury’s influence is on our lives. Mercury is not an emotional planet but more so an intellectual one. It’s how we asses things and use logic before we act, if we use logic before we act.
Our Venus Sign
Tumblr media
“I KNOW THIS ONE…LOVE RIGHT?”
You’ve guessed it, Venus rules over romance but a lot more as well. She’s our social graces, if we have any social graces at all. How we charm others as well as what we personally find pleasurable. Venus rules over our attitude towards money and material things. How much we spend and how often we treat ourselves. What we like to eat, what tastes good, what feels good. Venus is also our attractiveness, and what we’re attracted to. She gives us a clue to our love language on a more superficial level, what it takes to woo us. How we like to be seduced and pursued. Venus is diplomatic, she shows us how we make peace with others. Venus also rules over artistry and how appreciate the arts and even the possibility of having artistic gifts as well. Venus also highlights our sexual nature in terms of what we find pleasurable, what feels right, and what we find acceptable.
Our Mars Sign
Tumblr media
“Mars is our…anger?”
He can be, yes. After all he is the God of War. Mars in astrology represents energy. Our physical energy and vitality, and especially our sexual energy. He’s all about action, what it physically takes us to do…well, anything. He’s our day to day strength and drive. He exemplifies how aggressive and assertive we are. Our ambitions, durability, temperament, action, and drive. Do we exercise? How sexual are we? Our sexual style? Our competitiveness? All can be answered by our mars sign. Mars showcases how quick we are to anger, what makes us tick/explode. He’s also the last of the personal planets.
Our Jupiter Sign
Tumblr media
“……”
Jupiter is the first non personal planet as it stays in the same for an entire year. Everyone born within that year will have the same Jupiter sign. That doesn’t negate Jupiter’s importance in anyway, so don’t skim over him. It just means we have take a closer look at him in our natal chart by examining his house placement and aspects made towards him by other planets. Jupiter rules over good fortune, philosophy, travel, and higher level learning (different from mercury.) He is expansive and optimistic. He’s a grand catalyst to spiritual growth. He’s where we overindulge, our generosity, and wisdom.
Our Saturn Sign
Tumblr media
“So what does Saturn do?”
Saturn is like our astrological father. He sets the rules and regulations, the routine. And like when we disobey our paternal father there’s consequences the same applies for Saturn. Saturn is not out to punish anyone, he just returns anything we put out into the universe. “What goes around comes around.” Sound familiar? Saturn rules over Karma. Saturn in our chart shows us where he grounds us, where we must be held responsible, where we must work hard. Our careers, the practicality of how we achieve success.
Our Uranus Sign
Tumblr media
“and Uranus?”
Uranus is a much slower moving planet. His energy is very erratic, spontaneous, and rebellious. He’s extremely progressive and an advocate for originality. Uranus has to be looked at by house placement to determine its effects on us individually, as people from the same generation will share the same Uranus sign. Uranus in our charts will show us where we are unpredictable and rebellious. How and where we go against the grain. Our humanitarian side. How interested in activism we are, where we are liberated ourselves.
Our Neptune Sign
Tumblr media
“that Sea God?”
Indeed. Neptune is the God of the Sea. In astrology Neptune rules over spirituality, all things hazy, confusion, love and romance on a deeper, ethereal level. He is illusions and our dreams. Intuition and psychic abilities. Neptune has dominion over deeper creativity and artistic abilities. He also shows us where we might try to escape reality and what we may try to use to escape reality with. He is addiction, substance abuse, and deception. Our fantasies.
Our Pluto Sign
Tumblr media
“isn’t Pluto like not even a planet anymore?”
Yes, technically Pluto is a planetoid, but we still refer to Pluto as a planet in astrology so he will be respected as such! Despite his small size and the grand amount of distance he is from us his effects are undeniable.Pluto in our charts shows us where we are transformed and regenerated. Where we must die to be born again. His energy is very subconscious, we don’t always see it, but we feel it.  He is obsession, and our hunger for power, where we struggle for power. He is how we react to sex on a deeper, subconscious level. Where and what we become drawn and attached to. His energy is very primal. He also highlights where we’re manipulative or jealous if we’re displaying the negative attributes of Pluto.
Our Ascendant Sign
Tumblr media
“our…what sign?”
Our Ascendant sign is crowned the ruler of our chart, and is of equal importance as our Sun and Moon signs. It’s specific to our birth time and location. The Ascendant is like the mask we put on to face the world. It’s our initial reaction to external forces. The lens we see life through on a day to day basis. Our ascendant is our physical bodies, how we look and how we act in public. It’s how people initially receive you, our first impressions, our mannerisms. Our outer personality. If people were to describe you they’d likely describe this sign.
So, as you can see a lot goes into a persons personality even more than what’s been mentioned above, humans are complex beings who can’t be described as just one sign, or one anything. We are more than our sun signs, we are more than signs period.

I'm really blessed to have a mom who is coming to understand my mental illnesses more. She is getting her master's in school counseling after raising my two older sisters and then little me. I've never had a great relationship with my mom and it's always something I struggled with, but with my mental health declining and my college education fueling it on I finally had to talk some real truths with her. She's become so understanding and accepting of me that I just started crying. (But tbh I ALWAYS fucking cry)
While she still might be involved in the lds religion and a bit uncomfortable with my queerness, she's come a long way in accepting me and helping me become myself again.
Not really a witchy post, but I just wanted to share.

articles that helped me as a baby witch
so i’ve been helping my friend @wholecashews get into witchcraft and this has given me a chance to go over all of the things I read when I was just starting out and think about the things that really impacted me, and I decided maybe it would be cool to post some of the links I sent to her on here as well :)
so I’ll start with the big one: this article, Sigils Reboot by Gordon at Rune Soup, MADE ME BELIEVE IN MAGIC. Like before I was kind of like, “Sure, yeah, this sounds fun to believe in and play around with” but after I read this article I felt like I’d just found the glitch in the Matrix or something. I highly recommend reading if you appreciate an explanation of magic that leans toward the psychological side.
this little blurb about witchcraft and the placebo effect also makes a good point about the psychology behind magic’s power.
this thread on skeptics trying to get into witchcraft again discusses several people’s experiences with the psychological approach to magic, and was very helpful for me to read. Looking at all of these different articles as someone just starting off and trying to figure out “how does this even work?” really helped me get a handle on how magic works (to the best extent that you can even try to understand that) and helped everything suddenly feel a lot more accessible and sensible. Suddenly I was like “oh ok yes you use a red ribbon in this spell because of your brain and how it works, not just because Somebody Said So”. as a beginner that was an important distinction to make because then I began to see how I could make witchcraft my own instead of just copying people’s spells.
to that end, reading this piece on aesthetics and mechanics of magic made a lot of sense to me once I had really considered the psychological aspects of witchcraft. it was also encouraging for me to think about my own craft and put more thought into building it.
all of those links^ came from @upthewitchypunx‘s diy witchery resources. that page is a treasure trove, thank you for compiling it!
all of that info also reminds me of something i saw around tumblr a few times that really confused me at first: spell paradigms, meaning the assumption behind how a spell works. lots of spells don’t explicitly say “this spell will bring you money because the green candle has supreme money power or the thyme sprinkled around will attract it or etc”. instead they just sort of tell you what to do without telling you how they make things happen. the subject of spell paradigms is definitely still interesting and maybe not entirely clear to me, but I think it is related to the whole psychology aspect of the discussion. personally i haven’t really even begun to think about deities but have thought more about chaos and energy. deities is a whole other can of worms if we’re going to to get particular about how magic works, so I haven’t gone there yet.
the witches’ workbook by @theoryofmagick is a great general primer that I really appreciated reading because it clearly lays out a lot of things that are good for a beginner to think about. unfortunately i can only find those first 2 chapters, but they are great and informative!
this post also provides a simple list of ideas for what to do as a witchling. sometimes you just need a list!
Eliza at @maddiviner has a really awesome and informative site in general. I really appreciated how well-written her new witches page is - she also does a good job just laying a lot of info on the table for you. she has a lot of good info on divination as well.
lastly, I <3 andi grace! this article of theirs on coming out of the woo closet really helped me see how witchcraft and social justice are tied. i came to witchcraft already having radical politics, so i was not super into the very white, eurocentric, binaristic, and blissfully-unconcerned-about-cultural-appropriation version of witchcraft that came up sometimes on tumblr. this is a great and motivating read for anti-capitalist witchbabes.
ok 2 more and then I’m done.
Pagans of Color! Important and much-needed resources on racial intersections and practices of witchcraft - as a white person I love reading this site to broaden my perspectives. They also have a really good set of articles on there that are targeted towards white people in the witchcraft community.
and through them I found this really great article (and here’s their notes on it too) about the toxic privilege and racism that underlies white spiritual communities and how to improve it. always good to be thinking about this no matter where i am in my craft.
phew! ok. that’s all. as you can see i did a lot of reading starting out, and i still do a lot of reading. that’s what it’s about! hope these help :)

Altar
Since I'm just a baby witchling, I'm starting to build up my altar. I'm primarily using thrifed things and then cleaning them literally and spiritually. So far I have an ottoman basket thing for everything to go in as well as some boxes and containers to just organize everything.
I'm trying to be more earth conscious and getting things that are thrifted or bought from local shops. It's all a journey and the outcome I'm hoping for is to become more self-aware and more conscious of my actions (like what stores I'm supporting).
I'm try to update more, but no one is really following this journey yet, but stay mindful and magical anyway.

Brain fog lifting
Little witchy ways to help with brain fog (UPG). Brain fog is basically when you struggle with mental clarity, memory, focus, low energy, grumpiness, and the like. It’s no fun!
Using Crystals:
Pick a clear crystal, like quartz. Hold it to your temples/forehead and let it draw out the fog. Picture the fog being pulled from your head and swirling into the crystal, and the coldness of the crystal bringing clarity to your mind. (You can also do this by touching a crystal in your pocket if you’re in public!)
Using Water:
Dip your fingers in snow/moon water (tap water will do if needed) and touch any points on your face that you feel like the fog is affecting it (if that makes sense?!) I like to do: a drop on my chin, a drop on each cheekbone, one on my forehead and on both temples, and on my eyelids as well. With each drop, say a word you would like to bring back (clarity, focus, understanding, comprehension, memory, retrieval, ~ability to see~).
Using Air:
Get fresh air (even through a cracked window) and breathe deeply for one minute. Envision it swirling in your mind and clearing away any muckiness.
Using Sigils:
Find sigils for brain fog, clarity, memory, etc. and draw them in a place that you feel connects to your mind. For me, it’s my pulse points on my inner wrist (since drawing sigils on your face can be a hassle!
Non-witchy advice:
(Aka boring “have you thought about changing your entire lifestyle?” stuffs)
Evaluate your diet, and consider if there may be any foods influencing it. Have you been tested for food allergies? It’s worth considering!
Try to do light exercise at least once a day. For me this involves a little extra walking on campus, or some stretches in the morning.
Less sugary drinks, more water.
Give yourself at least 10-30 minutes before bed to wind down/think about the day/de-stress - even if it means you go to bed a little bit later. It can help sleep if you’re really busy and stressed.
Get a planner/make a to-do list.
Getting up at the first alarm is better for your clarity than hitting snooze six times (but I am guilty of the latter).

Everyday Secret Witchcraft:
Hey all, sorry I’ve been pretty inactive but I’m starting a nursing course at university very soon so I’ve had a lot of stuff to organise!
Anyway, this is pretty related because it’s a list of discreet little practices that you can do every day to help you connect with your craft in an easy and lowkey way. Many of these come from my own practice and work for me in the busy, mundane aspects of my life, but feel free to adapt and bend them to suit your own needs. Feel free to use this list as inspiration and also to add on to it! Let’s get heaps of ideas for all the witches (secret or not) out there!
EATING AND DRINKING:
- Say (either whispered out loud or spoken mentally) a quick thank you before you eat or drink. This can be to nature, a deity or divinity, to the hands that prepared the meal etc.
- Take 5 minutes to focus and put intent into food or drink as you prepare and / or eat it. This is also a good way to unwind and no-one will suspect a thing (the most anyone may say is that you’re a slow eater :P)
- If you have a meal using witchy correspondences, then great! If not, just enjoy it as sustenance from the earth.
- You can use colour magic when choosing a bowl/cup/plate etc to eat or drink from.
- Place a crystal in your water bottle or fav mug and sit it in the moonlight to cleanse and charge overnight. This will help eliminate any negativity that has accumulated in there, and I find it important to keep my water bottle cleansed since it’s my main source of hydration through the day. Don’t wanna be carrying around and drinking from a bottle with negative energy!
- Charge drinking water in sunlight or moonlight. This can be as simple as placing a glass of water on a table that’s in sunlight - nothing suspicious about that.
- If you like, you can infuse your water with mint, lemon etc to bring cleansing, protection or whatever else you like. Plus, it tastes good and freshens your breath.
- Drink coffee or tea if you like it. It’s beyond normal and each kind has its own magical properties.
SLEEP:
- Use colour magic when choosing blankets and pillows for your bed and focus your intent on them as you make your bed.
- Slip a crystal or two under your pillow or perhaps inside your pillowcase if you want to be even more discreet.
- Observe the patterns of the sun and moon if you can, and attune to your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
- Say good morning and goodnight to the sun, moon, any deities etc. Ask and thank them for protection while you sleep and blessings and guidance throughout the day.
- Sleep with your witchy tools near you: under or beside the bed, under your pillow or mattress, on your person. This may help you bond with them and connect with their energies in your daily life.
CLEANING:
- Open the windows and light a candle or some incense before cleansing. If anyone asks, say you’re freshening the room and letting in some good scents.
- Physically clean an area before you spiritually cleanse it. When physically cleaning, use your intent to banish any negativity as you go. Doing this regularly will make it less draining and you’ll have less to clean and cleanse in the long run.
- Cleansing your tools can be tricky, especially if you have a bunch of crystals and a stray tarot deck lined up on your windowsill in the moonlight. Instead, you can cleanse and charge them with your intent. This can be difficult and draining, but I find that carrying tools with me and mentally checking in with them to see if they need a cleanse can help me bond with them.
- Strategically place objects in sunlight or moonlight to get a quick boost. I like to do this with my bedsheets before I put them on my bed or with my water bottle. get into the habit of positioning items in sunny and/or moonlit areas to let them charge there without suspicion, or better yet, when you introduce a witchy object to your home, make that it’s designated place. For example, make a normal thing out of having crystals on your windowsill - they can charge there and if anyone asks, you can pass them off as decorative. Make sure whatever you place in the sun is heat safe and do your research with crystals as some fade in the sunlight.
- Sing or play music out loud. This helps raise the vibration of the area and drive out negativity. You may like to make this part of your cleansing method - opening the window, lighting a candle or incense and turning up the music as you work.
- Add some moonwater or sunwater to the sink when you wash your dishes to energetically cleanse and charge them.
OUTDOORS:
- Make a conscious effort to be mindful of nature. Notice the position of the moon or sun, the moon phase, temperature, weather, plants in season, animal encounters etc. I find that doing this strengthens my connection with nature and picks me up if I’m feeling down, as it’s very grounding for me to do.
- Ask the wind or rain to cleanse you of negativity. Close your eyes and slow your breathing if you can / want to. Let the elements cleanse and bless you, and remember to thank them.
- If you want to spend more time in nature, start by taking mundane things outside. Read, walk, run, play with pets, water plants, cloud watch, garden, sip your morning drink as you sit outside - there are plenty of ways to get out in nature without people thinking of you as a witch.
RESEARCH:
- Carry a little notebook or use the notes in your phone to scribble down any little ideas or thoughts you have. Be it a sigil or spell idea, a reminder that the full moon is coming up or a reminder to look up magical recipes using a certain ingredient you have lots of.
- Draw or write in a shorthand code or adapt a sort of ‘language‘ that you can write witchy notes in.
OTHER:
- Sigils! Sigils have a multitude of uses so making your own or using ones that people have given you permission to use can be a fantastic way to bring a touch of magic into your day.
- Clockwise motion: This motion is synonymous with the movement of the sun and therefore linked to luck, positivity, health, success, increase, manifestation and joy. It can be used as a gesture to draw things to you. Examples of when to use a clockwise motion: stirring drinks or food, after cleansing a space and then wanting to welcome in positivity.
- Anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise) motion: This motion is used to banish and rid negativity. I love to use this gesture when cleansing for this reason. Examples of when to use: when wiping down a surface, smoothing out blankets when making a bed, scrubbing yourself clean.
- Keep witchy objects close to you if they can pass as aesthetic or common, everyday items. If they can be perceived as decorative, there is no need to hide them! The more you have it around, the more likely others will be to accept it as your normal aesthetic, and if they see that’s what you’re into, you may be more likely to be gifted similar objects in the future. And who doesn’t love presents that can be used in their craft?
- Incantations: These are as versatile and personal as sigils, and can be said to the wind, spoken in your mind or whispered as you blow on a hot drink. They can be used for any number of things and can help to focus your intent, so get creative!
The more you do these activities, the less likely people around you will be to think that what you’re doing is witchcraft and they’ll come to accept it as part of your everyday routine. Not only that, but they’ll become strong habits to you - part of your everyday life. If you can achieve this, it’ll be easier for you to practice regularly as you get into a routine, and you may feel a better connection with your craft and yourself too :)
Feel free to add more ideas, this is merely my own practice!

DIY Magical Shower Disks
So you have seen our lovely bath magic spells but you cannot take a bath. Maybe you don’t have a bath in your current residence, maybe you are physically unable to use bathtubs, maybe you’re just super stretched for time but want to get in some extra magical umph. Recreational Witchcraft is here for you.
Shower disks are traditionally used in the aromatherapy world to relieve congestion and other flu-symptoms while showering via the use of essential oils, but we will be bumping up their magical potential.
Basic recipe:
1 cup baking soda
1 tablespoon corn starch
1/3 cup of water
Muffin tins and muffin liners
Combine baking soda and corn starch (making sure there are no clumps), then slowly add in the water. Fill lined muffin tins about third of the way, then leave out for 24 hours to dry completely. Carefully take them out of the liners, add your essential oils, and place your disk somewhere in your shower that will allow them to dissolve slowly while you do your business. Bam. You’re done.
Now onto the magic. All dry ingredients (herbs, spices, etc) should be added in with the baking soda and corn starch before the water is added. All essential oils should be added right before they’re used (so when they’re completely dry).
Cleansing and Purifying:
Tumblr media
essential oil of rosemary

There’s a reason this salt dough recipe is the first thing in my grimoire. Very few tools have been quite as versatile as this. I have made offering bowls, a measuring spoon, a deity statue, runes… and I could go on.
Salt dough is wonderful for witchery because you make it yourself, it’s cheap af, you can make it with things you steal from the kitchen while you’re stealing McCormack herbs (don’t lie, you know you’ve done it), and it’s salt based which is like the witchiest of witch things.
The small discs on the page are my latest idea, which is outlined in the second note on the page. I mixed dried herbs into the salt dough, formed discs, let it dry, and now I’ve got these portable little magic herb discs. The ones on the page are basil and powdered sugar for drawing wealth at work. But the possibilities are endless. If you can make an herb sachet or powder, you can probably also make it a salt dough disc.
Witch tip: set these out on a dish to dry by your window to give it all that good sun and moonlight.

It's 4 am...
It's 4 am and I'm having some deep thoughts and just want to put them out into the world to see if any other magical peeps have had a similar experience.
I was raised religious in a monotheistic religion. Church every Sunday, reading the bible, praying, and all that jazz. I'm unsure if it always didn't sit right with me or if it was as I grew older, but it was in my teenage years that I snapped out of it. I remember a particular instance where one of the teachers was having a lesson with a bunch of us around the ages 14-17 and she said that if we did not plan to get married and have children in the next 5 years them we were not following Gods plan. It enraged me because not only did that not fit in my plan, children were never going to be in my plans. I didn't want to and I wasn't going to be guilted into it by some middle aged woman who said it was some unknown deities plan. Around then I started questioning everything about myself and if it was what I truly wanted or if it was just brainwashed into me since I was a wee bab.
It's why wicca and theistic witchery doesn't sit right with me. I understand it and the belief that people have, I respect it. I just have come to believe that the religion I grew up in was like a cult and it has really messed up who I am as a person. So while I'm still working out who I am, I'm going to be sticking with secular witchcraft. I might expand to something else, but I'm comfortable with learning this way.
I'll make more personal posts like this if my blog picks up any watchers, but until then stay magical and mindful.

What to do this super blue blood moon!
Tumblr media
So pretty much every witch has been talking about this rare occurrence, with a pretty confusing name, and so lots of people don’t know what to do that night.
So what can I do?
Well first thing is to learn the correspondences
Super moon
This moon will have a strong effect on your personal power, as the moon is closer to earth creating a stronger gravitational pull.
Blue moon
The second full moon in a month. It enhances the connection between the realms (or in my belief the 9 worlds) and any spell work done has long-term effects
Blood moon
A lunar eclipse, an excellent time to welcome new beginnings or to let go of old feelings or unwanted items
* Now depending on where you live the moon falls on Wednesday which is a good day for creativity and change *
But what can I do?
⭐ Curses, specifically trump. Always trump
⭐ Long term spells, Money, Love, ect.
⭐ Cleanse your crystals
⭐ Perform a blessing or ritual
⭐ Dedicate the night to a deity or nature
⭐ Make an offering
⭐Meditation
⭐ Collect moon water
⭐ Scrying (or other forms of divination)
⭐ Kitchen Magick (create a soup or pie for dinner 😊)
These are just a few ideas, please feel free to tell me your own
