Here’s a new script to find the best text for new ads using an n-gram analysis
Ad text optimization is a great example of an area of PPC automation where the machines won’t get very far without the help of PPC pros. Machines need ongoing support from humans to deliver results. Automations can easily pick winning and losing ads through statistical analysis and do even more sophisticated things like predicting the best ad to show to individual users— they do this based on patterns discerned by machine learning models. However without compelling pieces of ad creative to experiment with in the first place, the machines won’t get very far. This is very different from other PPC automations like bid management where you have the option to set it up once and then mostly forget about it. To be clear, I think a set-it-and-forget-it approach to bidding is the wrong strategy but it is nevertheless possible. Ad management on the other hand can’t be automated to the same extent as bid management because the inputs Search Engine Land Source

Update your match types and account structure to improve performance, here’s how
The building of a perfect campaign structure to silo inbound SEM traffic by match-type to meet your ROAS goals requires some new strategies after updates with Google Ads and Bing Ads. Ted Ives and Adam Seybold offered insights into how to handle these issues during their SMX West session. Adam Seybold opened the session with an examination into the relevancy and context in search. His account structure strategy for success includes: Contextually relevant search advertising Minimizing disconnect between user search and advertising content Leveraging growth with hyper-focused bidding strategies Context: To drive results we need to have the correct relevancy to the content that we’re serving to an individual. Audience context matters just as much as search-term context. He shared a location-relevant search example that walked through the difference between searching to book a hotel room when you’re planning on traveling to a city, if you live in the city, versus if you are already in the city. 6 things you need to know about Google’s change for service area businesses
Earlier this year, Google announced that they were offering an improved sign-up flow for service area businesses. There have been lots of questions from the Local Search community about these changes and what they mean. I’m hoping to clarify some of that by pointing out the main things you need to know. 1. Instead of having a box you have to check that says you deliver goods and services to your customers at their location, you now have the option to clear your address. This function accomplishes the same thing; it just has new wording. Clearing your address will turn your listing into a service area business which will remove the directions icon, remove the maps pin, remove the listing from the Google Maps API and hide your address from the public. 2. If you’re a service area business and your address was cleared, don’t try to add it back. When Google started rolling this out in November 2018, Search Engine Land Source

Analyst: 8 billion voice assistants by 2023
Analyst firm Juniper Research is predicting “nearly 8 billion digital voice assistants to be in use by 2023.” That represents annual compound growth of more than 25 percent. It’s a very aggressive estimate that depends on continued smartphone penetration and expansion of virtual assistants to an array of other device categories. TVs and China driving growth. While most virtual assistants will be on smartphones, the main driver of growth is the expansion of voice assistants into other categories, such as TVs. Juniper says, “The fastest-growing category is connected TV-based voice assistants.” It also says that the market will still be dominated by English speaking markets, though China will drive significant growth through 2023. The Juniper report also asserts that voice-based commerce will reach $80 billion during the forecast period. However, the apparent definition of voice commerce is expansive. Separately, there’s evidence that v-commerce has little if any momentum, unless we include voice-initiated searches that ultimately result in transactions. More than 1.5 billion

Google Ads bringing click share to Search campaign competitive metrics
Click share is rolling out for Search campaigns in Google Ads. To help advertisers get a fuller sense of how their text ads are performing, Google is bringing the click share metric to Search campaigns. Why you should care Represented as a percentage, click share is an indication of how many clicks your ads received out of the total number of times Google estimates your ads could been clicked. It helps show how effectively your ads are engaging users compared to the competition. Impression share, on the other hand, shows how effective you’ve been at getting your ads shown to users. Click share has been available in Shopping campaigns for several years. Why Shopping first? Chiefly, because there is no average position calculation in Shopping campaigns. As Google’s Matt Lawson pointed out in his column on click share in Shopping campaigns a couple of years ago, “it delivers the type of insight that you’re used to receiving from average position in
