Fallout New Vegas Weekend/Fallout New Vegas Fan Celebration stuff, from a rando who went

The host for Fallout Family Feud was a Benny cosplayer who did an amazing job as host despite it being his first time hosting (or being at the meetup!!!). He also said the words “Benny’s got that skibbidy rizz” at one point and the crowd yelled at him

He also hosted the unofficial poker tournament on the Centennial Deck. I’m sure people have taken pics of the wild variety of cosplayers playing poker together

The view from Benny Hill (a big hill right next to the saloon) was amazing, especially in the evening with the setting sun

I missed the walking tour on Saturday but did get to go to the post office, now a museum. Jackie, a resident who was telling people about Goodsprings there, was super nice

There was a guy in a set of Nuka-Cola paint combat armor

Someone in Goodsprings was having a yard sale so people were going up the street to check it out

The Mexican food truck had the best and quite frankly biggest carne asada fries I have ever seen. They were also fucking delicious so I hope they’re there next year too

The Saloon’s brisket was so good. They give you BBQ sauce with everything but honestly, good BBQ doesn’t need it and the brisket certainly didn’t

There were several cosplayers in power armor and they were extremely impressive

There was a Lanius cosplayer who was extremely tall and frankly looked even more like what Lanius was meant to look like than in-game Lanius

The General Store was selling milkshakes. I bought one after sundown and promptly froze my ass off drinking it outside

Speaking of sundown, it gets cold as fuck after sundown. I had to call my friends instead of texting them because my fingers wouldn’t work properly from the cold

it's interesting how the more we know about the world and the more we advance in technology, the more the line of speculative fiction shifts. like that thing about how moby dick is written the way it is is because people used to believe the ocean was so dense that it was impossible to get to the bottom and shipwrecks and bodies would just be stuck neutrally buoyant halfway down. that's CRAZY. but that is the world they thought they lived in, and they wrote about it like it was the truth. because it was to them!

and while you could of course still write as if that were the truth, or write as if people still believed that to be the truth, now it's speculative fiction, it's fantasy, it's sci-fi. it's not a lived reality or how water/atmospheric pressure works. it's different when you know better. a common example from now: writing about a world where androids and floppy disks are contemporary to each other is different when you're doing it because it reflects the times you live in, vs a past you are imagining with those features, because the world you live in has long abandoned floppy disks and still does not have androids. back then, the same concept was science fiction. to do it now is retrofuture.

i suppose the things we take for granted--like that the future aesthetic is white and plastic because that is the present state of technology--might seem just as outdated in twenty years, when things change again. to quote men in black of all things, "Fifteen hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat. And fifteen minutes ago you knew that people were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow."

Make Landfall ending ideas:

Happy as possible for the plot - happy ending bc I’m always a sucker for fix-its, but runs the risk of maybe sort of undermining the thematic point of the last two and a half fics

Bittersweet - still relatively happy and doesn’t run the risk of unraveling any themes, but loses the opportunity for a really good sequel fic concept focused on parenthood and loss

Ok but unresolved - I dunno, it’s drama and we all love drama right. Also offers the opportunity to lean further into the themes of the fic itself

Make that shit hurt - I don’t know why I included this as an option because I have no ideas for it
