I really wish people truly understood how severe these "age verification" stunts are. Officials have already been caught in the UK admitting that these kinds of things are NOT just about children but also monitoring adults. To genuinely believe the US is doing this for the sake of children is naive. All of this legislation is being used for mass surveillance and censorship.
This isn't just about what you're doing on Youtube, it's cross site tracking, logging your location, who you're contacting, and what kind of information you're consuming. We have already seen the massive strides the government has taken to censor platforms like TikTok, which they've been unfortunately successful at, due to the pro-palestinian sentiments and criticisms of the US government for their role in the genocide of Palestinians. There has been so much recent legislation, new and changed, pushing for mass surveillance and control under the guise of "protecting the kids" (or under the guise of "combatting antisemitism").
Being able to pin point all of your data to you specifically through this puts you and everyone at risk, it completely erases the possibility of anonymity and silences marginalized peoples. Anyone that advocates for a better world or even entertains information regarding advocacy can simply be handed over to the government. We've been seeing journalists, protestors, advocates, and just regular citizens being unjustly charged and harmed, if not killed, by the hands of the government. This enables making it even easier for the government to do it.
I need to also insist that this is not just limited to activism but also genuine need for resources.
They've already been monitoring people online for years and continue to get worse, do NOT make it even easier for them to do so. If you need examples of real world applications of this:
The US Government revoking visas and halting visa applications to do social media background checks for "anti-semitism" (pro-palestinian content and protests). This includes suddenly revoking visa status without notice to individuals nor universities sparking national lawsuits.
Tracking women (and queer people) who are searching for and trying to access abortion services.
Investigating people solely based on suspicion of queerness, something that can be made easier to the government by seeing who is accessing queer resources and content.
Please try to grasp the severity of these sites requesting your information! Practice internet safety and ask others or research ways to make your time on the internet more private!
There are so many sources and alternative ways to access content out there, please do not feel like you need to give these platforms your information or else you're cut off from what you love.

I thought Old Man Yaoi was like a specific person or entity. Like you walk down to the river, there’s Old Man Consequences, you walk down to the oak tree there’s Old Man Sensibility, and then you walk into the gay club and you’ll never guess who it is

it’s so hot here that last night i discovered my trader joe’s chocolate wedges, one of which was meant to be my cheeky before bed treat, had fully liquified
in their normal form, they look like this
Tumblr media
alas i thought to myself, setting the small round circular tin down on the far side of the bedside table. none of this for me this tonight, i thought, applying my nightly coat of working hands hand cream
in its normal form it looks like this
Tumblr media
i woke up at 4 am and went to the bathroom. had to wash my hands obviously. had to moisturize them afterwards, in the dark, too.
needless to say, the first thing I appreciated when it was, at last, bright enough to see this morning was an
absolute
fucking
calamity.

Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”
