CONTRACTUALIZATION SHOULD BE ABOLISHED
Have you experienced walking inside a fast food chain and were greeted cheerfully by the staffs?
Have you experienced receiving motivating notes through a delivery from the crew of the food chain?
Have you experienced having a bad day and then these employees in the restaurant you entered just made your day?
Well, the positivity they give to others is not the same level of fortune they are getting. Most of them are under the “Endo” or technically known as end of contract or probationary employment, which means they are rendering only finite time (shorter than six months) in service. As defined by Asiapro, Contractualization refers to the practice of hiring employees who would render their services for a finite amount of time, usually, for a few months only. This is a system that has been practiced and used by many companies, including large corporations. These enterprises often utilize this arrangement in order to maintain their revenues up. According to Philippines Statistics Office, as of June 2016, out of 1,190,697, there are 256, 456 probationary workers in the Philippines. This is one of the most controversial labour practices that our Filipino workers are currently facing. Some companies are doing this to their employees to avoid their regularization and getting the benefits.
President Rodigro Duterte is one of the people who stand against contractualization. It is his advocate to remove the contractuals and make them regularized. Based on an article posted by Tomacruz (2018), in August 21, 2016, Duterte says he will be “unforgiving” of companies that continue to practice contractualization. He warns he would close down companies and take away permits if companies were found to be practicing contractualization.
The president is eager to abolish the endo. As a matter of fact, at the end of 2016, 36, 000 employees were regularized. After almost two years of delay, the president finally signed an executive order against contractualization in Cebu on Labour Day.
But until now, there are still numerous workers who face the injustice labour practices. Being a minimum wage earner is already a burden for them, how much more if they will not receive any benefits in exchange of their hard work. The Filipino workers must be given the rights and benefits they deserve. If you care to those employees who served you with alive greetings and smiles, if you care to the workers who work under the sun, and if you care to those workers who literally suffered with sweat and blood just to survive a day, then let’s stand together against contractualization. Not only the workers are involved here, we all are.
