“Well it depends. Is there one you really like? Because you’ve got more chance with them all in one, but it’s more mysterious if you spread ‘em.

“Y’know, I woulda guessed that I’d have trouble pickin’ a basket. But most of these are too romantic,” she said, lowering her voice, as if it was a dirty word. “Not my vibe.”

“Well, that depends,” Kins began, her eyes roaming over the baskets laid out before them, “Do you want an actual shot at winnin’ a basket or are you just here for fun? I’d say if you actually want a chance at one you put more than one ticket in for it.”
Tumblr media
“Oh, I’m here for fun,” Liv said, putting a hand on her chest, “and that involves winning somethin’. Who wouldn’t wanna go on a blind date?”

“–Depends, have you figured out which one’s mine? Because you should definitely put all your tickets in that one, then,” Max murmured, arms crossed as she gave Liv a slight smirk. “Which ones are your favorite? Maybe you can narrow it down and do five a basket?”
Tumblr media
Liv smiled at Max, cheeks growing pink. She looked at the ground for a moment just to break eye contact. “I’m not sure which one’s yours. Maybe you can give me a hint.”

Taylor looked at the basket, shrugging. “I think,” she said slowly, turning to her and clicking her teeth. “That you should put one in twenty different baskets.”
Tumblr media
With a shrug, she raised her eyebrows. “Maybe I should,” she started, smiling, “or maybe, you want me to do that so you can put all o’ your tickets in one.”

He hated this time of year, the basket auction wasn’t nearly as successful as the DAR pretended it was. He’d suffered through one too many awkward dates to believe in the event anymore, he knew better. “You should try online dating. Better chance of success.”
Tumblr media
Liv looked at Waylon, rolling her eyes.  “Ah, come on, live a little. What’s the harm in a little wine and small talk?” she asked, smiling.

Andrei shrugged his shoulders in response to her question, his hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans as he stood next to her and thought for a moment. “I put all of mine in one… all or nothing, you know? I like to live on the edge sometimes.” He replied, laughing softly. “But you should do whatever you feel like doing.”
Tumblr media
“Go big or go home -- I like it,” she said, nodding. Liv looked down at the tickets in her hand. “I have been eyeing this one.” She pointed at one of the baskets in front of them.

“Wait,” Resa looked at the blonde. “You actually wanna do this? Bid on someone’s basket just to spend time with a stranger?”
Tumblr media
“Isn’t that just...dating? Spending time with a stranger?”

“Oh my god, there are so many baskets,” Liv said, holding all of her tickets in one hand. “What do ya think -- should I put 'em all in one, or put one in twenty different baskets?”

Morgan was inside Wild Flour bakery with a line that looked like it was going to last longer than he had the patience for, but as Andrew stood outside the window thinking about whether to go in, someone walked out. The lawyer, the prosecutor, from the trial on Monday. She’d been a boss in that courtroom, and sure everyone else was bored because a DUI was a DUI, but Andrew had been fascinated. She just got to go up there and speak and talk about why she was right.
Of course there was more to her job, but she got to use her voice for something. That was so fucking cool. He had to tell her that.
“Oh, excuse me,” Andrew said, trying to catch up to her before she walked away. “Hi, uh— Ms. Goldin? Uh, ADA Goldin? I’m not sure what to call you. But I’m Andrew.” He extended his hand. “I was one of the jurors on your trial earlier this week. I just wanted to say your job is very cool.”
Tumblr media
By the time Liv made it to the cash register in Wild Flour, she’d nearly scrolled through the entirety of Twitter. She ordered, and continued scrolling, and handed over her card, and continued scrolling, and started to walk out the door, phone still in her hand, still scrolling. When she heard someone say excuse me, she glanced up, pressing her lips into a forced smile. He kept talking, and called her Ms. Goldin -- a name Liv swore belonged to her mama -- and ADA Goldin and I’m not sure what to call you. She laughed.
“Hi, Andrew, thank you. Nice to see you,” she said, shaking his hand. “Olivia is fine.” Something in his face reminded Liv of her own younger brother. Maybe it was the way he said very, with such youthful enthusiasm, like jury duty was just about the most exciting thing in a young man’s life. It made her smile. “So you enjoyed the case? Have you served on a jury before?”

I don’t mind doing the whole red carpet thing when I have to when it comes to publicizing a movie. But besides that, I don’t like those kinds of things at all. Celebrity status is not really something that appeals to me.

Ellis was too busy with the grinding card to look up, but when she said not a big planner, they looked up anyway. Really? They didn’t exactly figure law school was a chill place for disorganized people – but they’d been wrong before. There was an aid for every deficit, after all.
They tipped the pipe over to knock its screen out, and – gingerly, with great care – held it up between two fingernails to make sure it was still usable. “You must not be looking very hard,” they said, with a glance and a smile. Only took a couple seconds to tap the bud into the bowl.  Ellis drew those seconds out. “I dunno, this is pretty much it. Hangin’ out. Doin’ my part to keep Frostford green.” They tried to summon the image of whoever Liv thought they were, this 20% life spread out to make 100 like too little butter over bread. Jesus. Nevermind. They licked a fingertip and collected the flower-dust from the corner of the grinding box, touched it to their tongue.
“Guests go first,” they said. The lighter was already on the table; they pushed it closer and turned the bowl.
Tumblr media
“Oh, thanks,” she said, reaching for the bowl. In her open hand, Ellis placed the miniature galaxy, fingers brushing against her palm. Liv held the pipe firmly, taking care to keep it level. Without hesitating, she grabbed the lighter, flicked it with her thumbnail, and held it to a corner of the green. The flower crackled as it began to burn. As she inhaled, her cheeks puffed out a little, and as she held her breath, they stayed that way. The smoke pressed out from inside her chest, and she only held it in for one, two, three, four-- and exhale.
She couldn’t help it; she coughed. After she handed off the pipe and the lighter, she pressed her lips together, face growing a little pink from the effort. Another cough, and another, and she turned away from him and held a finger up, as if to say give me a sec. When her breath returned, she looked back at Ellis, still a little pink. “Whew! It’s been a while.”
It was Ellis’ turn now. She watched him take a hit, and leaned back in the couch. “Wanna listen to some music?”

If they could read her car like tea leaves, what was Liv reading now? They probably didn’t want to know. Ellis couldn’t remember the last time they’d brought a new person to the house, but they were pretty sure that whenever it was, they’d left the whole place dark and gone straight upstairs. Couldn’t remember the last time a new person’d had the time and the daylight to look around the living room alone.
Ellis didn’t change out of their work-clothes when they got to their room, though they caught their reflection in the corner mirror and bent to re-cuff their pants. On their way back down, they took the stairs two at a time. “You don’t tell your boss about this,” they said, eyebrows raised in warning. “I’m actually tryin’ to stay out of jail.” But for real. Ellis tried to keep their smile straight so she didn’t think they were kidding.
They circled around to kneel on the carpet, across the coffee table from her. “Where were you headed? What does Friday night look like for the People, when they’re not getting baked?”
Tumblr media
Liv took a few steps back and sat on the couch, crossing one leg over the other. The hem slid up her ankle as the fabric of her pants wrinkled at the knee. Houndstooth, down her leg.
She couldn’t even remember the last time she remembered Friday night. It usually looked like re-watching Degrassi, like boxed wine and blacking out, a gap in her memory she was happy to forget. But that’s not what she said. “I’m not a big planner,” she said instead, smiling. “I was headed home, but y’know, I usually just see where the night takes me.”
There was something mesmerizing about the way his neck bent over the coffee table, careful fingers working slowly, deliberately. “What about you? I never see you out from behind that desk of yours,” she said, watching.
