If Brian counted every step he had taken to the campus library and converted it into energy, he was sure the force would be strong enough to take him out of this world. This cruel, cruel world that was forcing him to study for a physics test that his professor insisted was the week after a gig he and the band had been preparing for for months–not that his pudgy, almost-elderly instructor would ever know–or suspect–that Brian was in a band. That was one thing he was trying to change about himself; the fact that he was Brian. He wasn’t Freddie. And he surely wasn’t Roger, who had kicked Brian out of their own flat four times that week, his curls soaked through with the same acid-rain that rolled down the streets as he pounded on the door, which Roger held shut with his booted foot as his one night stand whose-name-he’d-never-remember pushed her skirt up her legs and gave her interim lover a kiss, stained red. He’d mastered the awkward wave, one that expressed a sort-of hello-goodbye hybrid, Brian’s eyebrows furrowed in a sorrowful quasi-frown that he hoped would soften the blow when Roger inevitably failed to call her back.

Brian and Roger’s commentary on the Back Chat music video

Roger: Yeah this is um Back Chat haha yeah uh yeah no this doesn’t rate as one of my favorites at all.

Brian: Yes a very, very little known video. I’m sure this will be a surprise to most people. And again um you know maybe it’s a mercy that it wasn’t seen that much. Doesn’t really have a lot to say about the song does it? Um it always shows, you know, I don’t think anybody really had the time to sit down and seriously plan out how we would do this you know. I think we gave it to the hands, put it into the hands of a director and said you know, “Make a video for us.” And um that’s what you get, you get something which really has very little organic connection to the song. John’s song.

Roger: Nice bass. John’s got that very old Fender bass there. I mean, I don’t know what that bloody great thing going up and down there, you know, what’s it doing, you know? Freddie gonna fix it with that fucking great- No sorry, that enormous spanner. Ah a spanner in the works! Spanner yeah! Yes the best thing in this song is the percussion solo. …but I would say that, wouldn’t I! Careful Brian, don’t get caught into that thing. Oooo nice guitar there. Two nice guitars there! Very old one anyway, very nice guitar.

Brian: Interesting musically I think because John of course brought this very separate influence into the band. It turned out to be one of the great strengths, I think, you know John really wasn’t into heavy metal or the kind of stuff that Roger and I were into, Led Zeppelin or the Who or whatever, he was into funk stuff and um he really at certain times in our history brought that influence back in very strongly. This track is very sort of um sparse and funky and it’s got John playing this motif guitar, that’s not me playing, although I’m probably miming in the video.

Roger: I think we got sidetracked by the enormous success of Another One Bites The Dust down a route that wasn’t really us.

Brian: In a sense the album was very ahead of it’s time I would say in retrospect, because a year or so later you have Michael Jackson coming out with an album which was called Thriller which really set itself in an almost identical place, this sort of halfway house between rock and funk or whatever you kids- I don’t know quite what you call it, this sort of dance music at the time, um and was very successful with it. I know that Michael was quite influenced by us and by this album and Freddie was very close to Michael for a while. But at the same time this album for our fans was quite unpopular with many of them and still is. I would actually stand by it artistically though. I think it was being experimental which kept us alive. Not ever doing what we’d done on a previous album, always looking for something new and to me this was a worthwhile departure.

Roger: Yeah, the guitars are the best thing in this one. And the percussion solo which is particularly scintillating.

The echoes of screams and shouts filter in the space as the doors to the dressing room open, allowing all four men to walk in. It had sure sounded like a good show for them - the crowd had sung lyrics with them, everyone was on beat, and they were as entertaining as ever. Immediately, your eyes find your tall, curly headed guitar player and you can’t help the grin on your face. He’s sweaty, dressed in a long sleeve satin black shirt with matching trousers. You always loved when he dressed up. The fancy clothes on stage were so fun to see him in compared to the hoodie and jeans he stayed in around your flat when he wasn’t working.

“Sounded amazing,” you gush as he approaches you, hands going out to hold your waist. They’re hot from playing all night and calloused like usual. But you loved feeling them on you.

He leans down to kiss you first, a sweet peck that hides some heat. “Thanks, love,” he whispers, hands moving to your backside lazily.

“Lost three fucking drumsticks,” Roger grumbles, throwing himself onto the couch and fishing a cigarette out of his pocket.

“New record for you, Rog,” John teases, standing in front of one of the mirrors to begin removing his button up shirt.

Roger’s eyes narrow as he lights the cigarette between his lips, staring at the smirking bass player. “Fuck you, Deacon.”

“We still sounded marvelous, dear,” Freddie chimes in, picking up one of the glasses of readied champagne that awaited backstage for everyone at each and every show. “We always do. No need to fuss.”

The blonde simply takes long drawls of nicotine, the smoke slowly filling the air, and doesn’t bother responding back. You were smart enough to know this wasn’t simply about dropping drumsticks. Keeping your arms around his waist, you move to stand at Brian’s side, lifting your gaze up to him. You meet his eyes and furrow your eyebrows, nonverbally trying to figure out what was wrong. Brian’s eyes flick to Roger and then back to you, and he speaks quietly as he explains. “His favorite groupie cancelled on him tonight and no one’s answered any of his messages. He’s a bit bummed about it.”
