Felix chuckled. What did they teach witches these days? “And what if those witches are misguided? What if… they just hold secrets that are dear to us.” Secrets like how to cure death. “I wish for you to swear you will not betray me.. nor my science.” 

Joey gave a slight laugh, nodding. “Believe me, I have thought that. I think a lot of things. That... maybe the history of the coven is covered up. Things they don’t want us to know maybe,” she said. “I swear, Felix. I do.”

Ava nodded. She was not sure if her mother’s fussing was truly what she needed. There was a darkness in her now, had been ever since her magic touched those infected trees all these weeks ago. It was growing worse with every day, as if her sadness and anger was feeding that sickness inside her powers. She wanted to find that hunter, she wanted to burn him. But he was gone and with him the memory of that night… For a moment the young witch considered confiding all that in Joey. Her friend already knew about her magic acting out. But then it would be just another person close to her worrying. And Ava could not take that. Ava did not want that. “You know what? I think it would help me the most if we could get my mind off of things. Just for a few hours. Do something new, something fun, talk about something else. What do you think?”

Joey’s eyes scanned over her friend’s face, she wondered what she was thinking. What she was feeling. She hadn’t been through what Ava had, she couldn’t pretend to know what she was going on in her head. Though she knew it wasn’t her place to pry, she didn’t want to upset Ava. She’d wait for her friend to open up to her if she wished to. “Of course, anything you need, Ava,” she nodded, offering a smile. “I think some fun will do us both good. What do you feel like?”

“I try to. Maybe that should be my new year resolution… tell more good news.” She kissed the top of her friend’s head. “I don’t know… it didn’t seem like a bullet wound. But it seemed… deliberate. Wolves are usually so good at avoiding that sort of thing. And he was so disorientated. He still remembers so little…” 

“Maybe that’s what we all need. To move forward focusing on the good things,” she smiled gently, resting against her. “Um... stab wound? Maybe... a poison. There was wolfsbane in the water. That all... has to be linked, right?”

“What i’m here for, bad news and witty one liners.” She squeezed the woman’s arm again. Leaning on her. “Dwight…. he had some pretty bad splinters. But i don’t know how he would’ve done it to himself.” 

“No, you’re not always the deliverer of bad news. You tell me good things too,” she smiled, resting against the girl too. “Dwight? You think... wooden bullets?”

Remy shook his head with a tight smile. “No don’t apologize.” He said waving the sentiment away. “I guess her death is just hitting me harder than I expected it too. She’s been old all my life, I should have been prepared for her to go. I guess no one in my family was.” He finished with an exasperated gesture.

“Oh?” He exclaimed, “Then you’re a woman after my own heart, but I’m afraid I don’t display the magical books here, for safety reasons.” He said, happy not to have to tip toe around the subject. “And per coven order, of course. They’re in the back.” He said with a quick nod to a door behind the counter.

Joey smiled gently. “Okay, thank you. I wouldn’t want to offend or upset you,” she said, getting back to her usual brighter self. “I think no matter how prepared we think we are, when it actually happens it’s totally different,” she nodded. 

“Yeah, I live my life reading books from the nonfiction section. Well, we also have the internet too,” she laughed at herself. “Of course, yes. Definitely something to be kept safe.” She knew how her coven protected grimoires and spell books. “So... you talk to the coven then? You know about magic?”

He watched the woman carefully. “Of course, your magic is useful not just to your kind but to all species. And once our kinds were at war… as i’m sure you know.” His eyes wandered her again. “I would never compel you. But… blood oath’s were once common in my day.” 

Joey nodded as he spoke, she’d grown up in this town, in the coven. She was very aware of the history of their species. “Yes. We are taught the stories and about trials, war, all of it. Many witches are guarded for that very reason.” She looked at him. “Thank you. I trust that. Okay... what do you wish me to do?”

“I am always here for pep talks, you know that.” She nudged her arm. “I… am sad to say i’m not sure everyone wants that. Not anymore.” She sighed, thinking back to the injuries Dwight had come to her with. Her suspicions had started then. “But i don’t want you to worry. You’ve had enough on your plate lately.”

“I need a good pep talk, pretty often,” the girl laughed gently, she was grateful for her friendship with Fliss. “Well, yeah, there’s always going to be people who don’t... that’s why all these awful things happen in the first place.” She nodded. “No, I am okay. I don’t want to be kept in the dark.”

Remy nodded knowing that his mother’s side of the family and their history of magic was an old and sordid affair. He couldn’t disagree even though he felt shut out of that history, looking in as if a voyeur and missing a piece to make certain things make sense.

“You’re very kind to say that about Aunt Kami. You’re right, I just…” He sighed, trying to keep a veneer of indifference up. “Whatever she’s collected, I just hope that I can learn from it and preserve it like I have for a lot of families in this town. It’s the least I can do.” And Remy continued to not sound too happy about it, his resentment getting the better of him.

Remy huffed a sigh, trying to chill out. “I suppose so. What do you obsess over? Does it have anything to do with something in my shop, hm?” He questioned hoping to maybe make a sale out of the girl’s visit, if nothing else.

Joey nodded, she was interested in the man’s story though she knew in their short meeting it wasn’t her place to pry. “She sounds like an interesting woman.” She nodded as she listened. “Well, with everything you have done in here,” she started, glancing around the store. “I believe she’d be honoured to have you restore her things, to preserve them. Though...” She paused. “Are you okay?”

“I am sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.” She smiled once more. “Me? Uh science. I love science books. History... things with... uh, considered magical.”

“I wouldn’t go advertising as that.” She smiled, amused at the girl. She paused at the witches words. “Nate is… actually taking it really well. Exceptionally well. Nate wants to date. As in date me.” 

“People might actually believe it and it’s the least true thing about me,” she laughed at herself. “He is? I guess that seems really like him.” She looked at her. “Yeah? He asked you out? What did you say?”

Felix smiled slightly at the witch’s words. She was sweet, innocent. He was almost sorry for the world he was about to drag her into. “I don’t trust anybody, not truly. Centuries of life gives you that knowledge.” Everybody was out for themselves, even if they claimed they weren’t. It was funny the stories people would tell themselves to feel like a better person. “I am afraid a promise is not… enough. Loyalty is subjective. Are you familiar with the magic of my kind?” 

Joey smiled back at the vampire, she was feeling confident. She liked the man, she was intrigued by his work, by him. She wanted to do this. “That sounds like really smart advice. I guess, as a witch, my parents and the coven have always taught me to protect myself. There’s people who would use witches,” she nodded. “Okay... my word is not enough? Magic? Your blood... compulsion?”

Fliss moved closer. “Your friend had just died, it’s grief. You had every right to be crazy.” She lifted her arm, squeezing her friend’s shoulder. “but i’m glad you’re doing better. We’re all edgy… none of us want to die. But i trust the cops in this town… we seem to be okay.”

“Thank you, you always make me feel better about myself. I need that sometimes,” she laughed a little. “But I am doing better. That’s true. Really too. They all want the same as us. Peace and safety.”

Ava could not help but smile at her friend’s pun. Yes, snow would truly be magical, better magic than her own. “If truth be told I am not doing too good”, she sighed, hugging her arms around her chest. The first christmas without her sister would be hard for all of them. “But I am trying. Mom’s making me crazy, fussing over me so much. I guess I cannot blame her after all that has happened” A sigh, another shrug of her shoulders. “It helps to talk to you though”

Joey smiled gently. “It was a bad joke I know.” she laughed a little, though it faded with her friend’s words. “I am so sorry, Ava. I can’t even begin to imagine what you’ve been through. And dealing with that all. But I am here, anything you need or don’t need to talk about.” She smiled a little. “I’m glad she’s fussing about you. You need it and she probably does to. But I am glad, you’re not alone. You can always come to me.”

“Now you’re very easy to buy with. I think i am a straight mug kinda girl.” She laughed, leaning on the side. “Now… i think it is. Life isn’t ever going to be like it was. 

“That is me. Easy,” she joked, shaking her head at herself. “Well, we are what we are. Nothing wrong with that. How is... Nate taking it all?”

Felix nodded. “Then…. i suppose i’ll let you into my secrets.” He laughed, rubbing his lips together. “But i will need some sort of… promise that you will not tell.” 

“That is a lot of trust and I want you to trust me,” she laughed gently. Joey nodded. “I promise. If you let me in, I will be loyal.”

“You’d be surprised how it helps. At least you’re going to be easy to buy for.” She smiled at the girl. “I can imagine and trust me werewolf christmas can be as weird.”

“Seriously, I love coffee mugs and water bottles. Cute cups with straws. I am easy,” she laughed gently. “But is it really weird? It’s our normal.”

Fliss quirked an eyebrow. “One can only hope. Honestly, the only good thing about the last few weeks is sales of protective herbs have gone up… i think every witch in town is on edge after Ava’s sister…” She sighed. “How are you holding up?” 

“Maybe if we all pray hard enough it will happen,” she laughed a little, looking up at her friend. “Yeah, my mom has said as much... everyone is feeling edgy. I suppose I am. I don’t hide it too well.” She sighed a little. “Better. Better than I was. Not so crazy.”
